I have it on decent authority that operation London Bridge is being dusted off.

10. You play golf with the Queen's private physician.
5. You know a bloke with an OBE
2. You read it on Twitter
1. Paul Burrell told you.
Is that the one where the right wing press will be blaming Meghan?
My money is on Boris slipping her something to use as a mask to cover all the sleaze allegations.Insane_Homer wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 8:37 amIs that the one where the right wing press will be blaming Meghan?

Condolences to those of you in the UK, because the country will have a psychological meltdown.ASMO wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 8:15 am I have it on decent authority that operation London Bridge is being dusted off.
I think you will find there is a significant proportion of the population that could not give a fuck.
One can safely say; the UK will never have as good, & hard working a Head of State

I fear we're not a significant enough proportion to stop the politicians and press going all in on it for a week or so. Just look at the amount of coverage William and Kate receive every time they pop out another child.ASMO wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:13 amI think you will find there is a significant proportion of the population that could not give a fuck.
Regarding the Royal Family - possibly. But the Queen herself has tremendous support in the UK. Her passing may very well be the last great Monarchy the UK sees. Think when she goes - it will be Royal Family Lite.ASMO wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:13 amI think you will find there is a significant proportion of the population that could not give a fuck.
It will be 2 weeks solid minimum of TV all channels sombre retrospective biographical documentary and enforced no jollity and the "disrespect police" having a field day
A WEEK OR SO?sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:20 am

Not being funny, she's been head of State for the entire lifetime of probably a majority of the country. It would be pretty weird if there was anything but major coverage.sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:20 amI fear we're not a significant enough proportion to stop the politicians and press going all in on it for a week or so. I er, don't think we celebrate someone's death in the same way as a famous sporting triumphTorquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:43 amA WEEK OR SO?sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:20 am

I'm an ex-teacher, no kids to be performative in front of these days. Not quite sure how I'd show the Queen my full respect while working from home testing and documenting exam board software.Kawazaki wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:54 amsockwithaticket wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:20 amI fear we're not a significant enough proportion to stop the politicians and press going all in on it for a week or so. I hope people who work with kids in the education sector show the Queen full respect when she dies.
Don't be an arsehole.

I don't think that's a bad thing. I generally think the Royal Family seem to be a net positive for the UK, if only for tourism or soft power, selling gossip magazines and the odd bug Wedding event and celebration. A kid of social museum piece. But maybe moving them more to the level like The Netherlands, Norway and Sweden might be best.Thor Sedan wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:27 amRegarding the Royal Family - possibly. She is certainly the icon of the 2nd half of last centuryKawazaki wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 12:49 pm She is 'The' Queen. Who used the term "celebrate"? You've been going on about 1966 forever. So much so, it's the single reason many of us could not bear the thought of Eng ever winning a football trophy again. You'd be insufferable.JM2K6 wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:54 amI er, don't think we celebrate someone's death in the same way as a famous sporting triumphTorquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:43 amA WEEK OR SO?sockwithaticket wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:20 am

Probably the best time, half the country will be on holiday and those of us who want to join in the respectful celebration of her full life of service can, those of us who want to avoid the mawkish servility and endless hours of media bumlickery can watch Koreans murder each other on streaming services.
People bring up 1966 because it's a triumph, and it's the last time we won a major football trophy, so it's relevant every 2 years. It's a bit different to the idea of talking about the Queen for 5 years because she's dead. People are not going to give that much of a shit, it'll be a month or two, some hasty TV series and a film or two, and everything else will be exactly as it was before.Torquemada 1420 wrote: Tue Nov 16, 2021 1:33 pmWho used the term "celebrate"?
