First record you bought.

I bought Complete Madness by Madness in 1982 or 1983 with my pocket money. It was an import and I had to save a while for it. My dad had a sound engineer friend who put it onto a metal TDK tape for me. I even had baggy trousers and a thin tie. And a porkpie hat. A proper little twat I looked.

Just heard 'It Must be Love' on the radio in the car. Reminded me of it. Still fucken love Madness

Using record as a generic term for an album rather than vinyl because they hadn't made a comeback at this point and the CD was king, the first one I bought for myself would have been Iowa by Slipknot (2001). A classic of heavy music, that something so ferocious and dark sold as many copies as it did is remarkable. There's much gnarlier stuff out there, of course, but it's still a damned heavy album to have made it into the (sort of) mainstream.

I decided to buy it after hearing Left Behind which is comfortably the most melodic song on there. My exposure to 'alternative' music at that point was just a few pop-punk bands like Blink 182 and Sum 41, so Iowa blew my tiny 11 year old mind and really shaped my musical taste going forward.

It is possible I bought something earlier on cassette, but the earliest I can recall buying is what would surely be regarded an item of high cultural value, Now 14, on vinyl. It's the only Now album I ever bought, and I'd have been maybe 10 or so, neither feels like much of a defence

This. I was 12 and this was pretty much my first serious purchase off my own pocket money. Still a magnificent album that I know word for word, even though my taste later evolved to much heavier and more extreme music. I play it once or twice a year, which is enough to keep it in the memory bank.

Bought this when it was a new album in 1972. I was 10.

I still have the LP, and it holds up well TBF with some pretty good tracks.

I want to say it was something cool - but my first purchase was Kyle Minogue - repackaged The Kylie Collection.

I didn't like the music but loved her.

Next purchases were Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love, The Cult - Sonic Temple and Motley Crue - Dr Feelgood.

I didn't have a clue what I liked.

Got some birthday money to buy my first cassette tape. My 'cool' older cousins... who were still in elementary school now that I think of it, but my mind thought of them as teenagers... suggested I get Van Halen's "1984". "Jump" was a cool tune, so did that. I was five or six.

Ghostbusters soundtrack was another. "Da-da da da, da-da. Bada da-da da da... GHOST BUSTERS!"

Either Golden Brown by The Stranglers or Maid of a Orleans by OMD. After 40 years I can’t remember which I got first and as they were released within four days of each other it’s difficult to guess which is more likely. First album was a few years later - Iron Maiden, Live After Death.

Oddly enough, I went the other way. Was initially Iron Maiden for me but Marillion have been my favourite band for decades.

You can shove Kayleigh, though.

First single I bought was Going Underground by The Jam but I got both The Police’s Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon and also Brass in Pocket by the Pretenders as gifts before that.

First album I bought was Regatta de Blanc by the Police.

I was a big fan of The Police then as you can tell, they were also my first gig. Only really liked their first two albums though, three at a push.

God only knows how much music I pirated before I actually paid for a record, but I'm 99% sure it was Viva la Vida by Coldplay. I would have been 16.

Either that, or, naturally, something by Slayer -- iTunes entrapped me one day by offering their golden era discography remastered for $50.

For the record, I completely stand by Coldplay's early work, their first four albums are all full of great stuff. Make all the gay jokes you want!

Unfortunately Coldplay totally went off the rails as the 2010s came around, so they also hold the distinction of being the first band to piss me off by selling out/going to shit.

Frizzle Fry remains one of my favourites. Crazy music. Went off Primus when they got even more crazy around Pork Soda time, but their later stuff is actually quite good again.

Yeah, as much as I loved Frizzle Fry I hated Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda.

Got one of those new fangled cd players on my 17th birthday. Didn't have enough money before then to afford to buy cassettes or cd's anyway. No idea what was the first CD or cassette I bought. Listened to mostly my mother's and brother's music, so things like They might be Giants, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Armatrading, Mango Groove, Roxette etc

Ummmm, Rolf Harris when I was 5, The best of Rolf Harris, he was fondling a Kangaroo on the cover.

I'm not ashamed, 'I've lost my mummy' is a timeless classic.
