I remember being shocked when I saw Joost, I think it was the first time I’d seen what this horrible disease does.

I’m at a loss, actually, I don’t know what to say, I had only this afternoon signed up for the annual Doddie Aid fundraiser which starts in January. They are doing great work in funding research.

This makes me incredibly sad. A brilliant player and his name will live forever in a fight against this pig of a disease.

Edit: I will remember him with a smile on my face and every time I hear the phrase "mistaken identity".

Terrible news, but what a fight he put up. A true legend in both rugby and life. RIP

He couldn’t have done any more to raise funds, raise the profile of the research etc etc. It takes a hell of a person to put his own personal misery behind him to focus on making things better for the people after him.

Yes the MND5 charity has done amazing things so far. Jill Douglas and the team are doing a great job.

Managed to get a signed book from him when he ans Stewart Weir did the book festival pre covid. Will be keeping that in good nick.

Expected but still so bloody sad, hopefully he will be at peace now. Thoughts to his loved ones.

It has become part of Scottish, and probably Lions, folklore that comment. Hear it all the time at internationals and dinners

Even knowing it was coming, it's terribly sad for his family.

He leaves a tremendous legacy with his Foundation.

Also confident that his charity now has momentum and people behind it who’ll keep driving the fundraising. It’s pretty much a permanent part of the Scottish rugby scene already.

Awful disease, and the Big Man took it all on head on, and others will hugely benefit from his efforts.

Not really one for the celebrity culture etc but I do feel genuinely moved by his passing. Such a stoic bloke.
