Watching this on 1News and hoping all posters in affected areas are safe. My son and his family are on a slope so are safe but friends in Whangaparoa have been without power for two days and have been told to expect 2~3 more days.

Glad to hear they're safe. We've postponed our trip for the time being. I also had to cancel a trip to Nelson last August due to serious flooding. Fuck you, climate change!

Sister in Mangawhai saying power might be out for a week. They have a small gennie but not sure it can run all fridges and freezers. Also, their cooking is all electric so not sure how that's going.
Daughter trapped down at Tara Iti golf course, but they have full generation so OK there.

Far canal - what a night. The noise was incredible. God knows what the east coast was like.
Thankfully we could move downstairs and into a room on the western side of the house and got some sleep in.
And then, when we woke, Gabrielle was like a PR poster - it fucked off during the night and we just have some debris to sweep up.

Search for trapped firefighter suspended after landslide in Muriwai, another in critical condition
One firefighter is in a critical condition and another is missing after a landslide crushed a house at Muriwai, west Auckland on Monday night.
A crew from a volunteer fire brigade was investigating flooding in a house on Motutara Road in Muriwai, when they were hit by a landslide and the house collapsed.
Two of the firefighters were trapped. One was rescued early this morning and is in a critical condition in hospital, while the other remains missing, a spokesperson said.
The search for the missing firefighter was called off in the early hours of the morning, according to Fire and Emergency NZ chief executive, Kerry Gregory.
Gregory said 10 crews from seven brigades and including Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), police and St John were immediately scrambled to a full search and rescue operation.
A geotechnical assessment of the area will be carried out "as soon as possible" so decisions can be made about resuming the search, Gregory said.
"Our thoughts are with our firefighters, and with their loved ones."

Got off lightly here. Cover blown off the BBQ table is the only sign of the wind during the night. Was fucking noisy though. Quite a few trees down around the district though and a few road closures.

The New Zealand Government has this morning declared a National State of Emergency, to assist in the response to Cyclone Gabrielle.
The Minister for Emergency Management, Kieran McAnulty, signed the declaration at 8.43am.
Prior to signing the declaration he advised the Prime Minister, and the Opposition spokesperson for emergency management, who were both supportive of the declaration.
The declaration will apply to the six regions that have already declared a local State of Emergency: Northland, Auckland, Tairāwhiti, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, and Hawkes Bay.
This is only the third time in New Zealand history that a National State of Emergency has been declared.
“This is an unprecedented weather event that is having major impacts across much of the North Island,” Kieran McAnulty said.
“Since Sunday, NEMA have been in close contact with local civil defence emergency management (CDEM) teams of affected areas to assess the need of a declaration of a state of National Emergency.
“NEMA has been giving advice to myself and the Prime Minister on the need of a national State of Emergency based on the assessments of the local teams, and until now the advice has been that it was not necessary.
“NEMA met with the affected CDEM groups. Based on feedback from the groups and NEMA I consider that the criteria have now been met and a National State of Emergency would be beneficial.
“The local leadership, CDEM groups, and emergency responders in all of the affected areas have been doing an outstanding job, but the widespread damage caused by this cyclone means we need a National declaration to support them.
“This declaration will enable the Government to support the affected regions, provide additional resources as they are needed, and help set the priorities across the country for the response.
“A National State of Emergency gives the National Controller legal authority to apply resources across the country in support of a national level response.
“This declaration gives us the ability to coordination further resources for affected regions. I want to emphasise that the Government has already been surging support and resources to the regions for some days.”

I'm sure they'll get it back on for you FOG. Lots of slips in the area so tread carefully. Heading to Paihia next month to try to convince the Mrs we need to move back home (although admittedly not her home). I like it there and we've rented the penthouse of one of those holiday apartments to try to impress. Some new poxy cyclone better not enter the picture in March.
Edut: Just asked the electricity question of her and here's the response: "No, power not on. Last estimate was late today but I think that will be pushed out as there will be so many other emergencies in the meantime. Loads of roads out of action due to slips and trees down"

We've made it to Mangonui. Roads were fine. It's stopped raining and the sun is threatening to break out. Just had some delicious fresh locally caught Hapuku at the Mangonui fish shop.
Think this part of the north is through the worst. Feel bad for all the poor buggers further south who are still copping it.

If it's any consolation their Hoki wasn't that great and there chips were a but ordinary. Piahia fish and chips were better, although they didn't have fresh hapuka, and their chips were also a bit ordinary.

Tanners Point / Athenree is a gorgeous bit of coastline mate. Nice place to live, although my preference would be a bit further from the ocean nowadays. Karangahake Gorge was closed yesterday and I think the road up to Whangamata as well... but aside from that most of the damage to roads in the Western Bay was fallen trees.

Indeed I have. Had an excellent creamy red ale made by the Bay of Islands brewery. Unfortunately only available on tap at the Duke of Malborough in Russel. And had some solid offerings from Phathouse brewery which is just out of Piahia. They had a bar, fillery plus their core range is available in bottles.
Have been for a swim at Coopers beach this morning. Water is glorious and it really doesn't feel like we've been through a cyclone here, although we did lose signal this morning. Only came back about 30 minutes ago.
I almost feel guilty given how bad others have had it. But I'm going to go with grateful instead.

But hope everyone's okay. Seems to have calmed down significantly in Wellington for now, but metservice is saying we're in for another spin tomorrow morning, but looking calmer further North at least.

Mcleods beers (from Waipu just south of Whangarei) have also been quite widely available so far. And they make some excellent drops. I may be drinking one at the moment while looking over the pool at the harbour...

Meanwhile here in South Africa we've just declared a state of disaster in 7/9 provinces due to flooding. Twelve deaths so far. Mpumalanga and Kruger National Park badly affected.

Great place. McLeod's is a regular spot I frequent when home. Good selection of brews and really good food. Pizza's are a little different but usually very good.
Hoping roads all the way from Mangawhai up to Karikari will be clear for me in a couple of weeks. Planning on golfing at Carrington Winery (and of course getting fish and chips and Mangonui on the way).
