As a new boundary, and likely a still fairly safe tory seat, there's a group trying to organise a tactical vote to ensure that someone other than the tories win. Greens and Labour have historically had the next significantly high votes. I'll happily give my vote to either one to help it along!

Sunak looked like Harrison Ford shitting himself as Roy Batty looms over him.

Although hopefully the only electorate lacks the basic humanity of an android and just chucks him off the building.

No such poetry as that encounter either, I don't expect that to improve any. There won't be any great aspirational speeches, I expect this to the worst, lowest, dirtiest campaign period ever with Labour constantly having to say no, they are not going to force 8 year olds to have gender reassignment surgery

I quite deliberately left them out. Other than providing a second right wing option to split the vote they will be an electoral irrelevance. They haven't performed in the by-elections, they didn't perform in the locals, they are a nothing protest party given a disgraceful amount of attention by right wing UK press (which is most of it).

Starmers riposte to Sunaks speech was superb. The Tories are going to get spanked.

Yeah, ultimately whilst they poll well, when push comes to shove at a GE, you'd expect a decent chunk of their support will be voting Tory.

It's going to be a shitshow for the next month. Thankfully I'm on holiday next week so will at least miss the opening shots.

I think EM is spot on, the Head boy has given up & this was just him going; fuck it , I'm gone !.

As an aside, whoever is the Tory Election guru, he's stealing a living ! Today's announcement was the least professional Political speech I've ever seen; it made that speech by May, where the letters kept on dropping off the wall look like the Gettysburg Address.

I know Sunak is a hopeless Politician, but why in the name of Dog would you keep talking about the Opposition, in YOUR FUCKING ELECTION LAUNCH !!!!

Will watch that in a bit, I have seen The Rest Is Politics' video about it all and Rory Stewart was getting texts from Conservative MPs and even a cabinet minister saying they had no idea what was going on. It does rather lend itself to the idea that he's decided this has stopped being in any way fun and just wants to fuck off to California in time for the new Yank school year.

Funnily enough I’m meeting our local Labour candidate for a coffee tomorrow on a completely different matter. I’m surprised he hasn’t called off to be honest

The scuttlebutt is Labour had themselves fully prepped for a May election just in case, so I would imagine that a date that's still a month and a half away doesn't need to disrupt anyone's day to day all that much right now.

It's the Tories who weren't particularly prepared and are in quite short order going to have to sort a lot of stuff out, from candidates to leaflet printing.

Probably only so much preparation you can do as they've destroyed the party the last four years.

Labour with a big majority, record low turnout, I predict.

Well, yes. I think they probably would've needed the expected next 5 - 6 months before an election to find enough people willing to stand when it's incredibly unlikely they'll win. The activists and willing door knockers will be way down after the disastrous local elections.

I can't imagine that seemingly pulling the rug from under everyone like this is going to help with any of that.

From memory 3rd quarter 2024 election was the longest odds at the bookies. No one was picking this date.

Going asap means the Tories lose less seats, but that's been true since they got rid of Big Dog, more true since Truss, and more true for the last year of failure. On the other hand, if they were going to go in July why not May during the council elections? That would've probably helped their council vote, people don't need to use it as a protest if there's a general election to vote in, more Tories coming out to vote for a general election too and voting in a local election who wouldn't have. As it is the Tories were nuked in local elections, and now the remaining Tory activists will have to come out and do it all over again two months later.

Reports are even some cabinet ministers were not told and learned about it the same way as everyone else.

Looks like Sunak has decided "fuck this, I'm done".

First week of school holidays up here, a lot of people booked on holiday. So it’s not unreasonable for people to be a bit pissed about it.

I wouldn’t say disrespectful, just another demonstration that the Tories really don’t give a fuck about Scotland.

Edit - also makes it a bit difficult as some of the buildings normally used will be understaffed and a lot of election officials, polling station staff and counters will be on holiday, so might be some problems there too.

They had three indicators they were watching to go positive to tell them it was time; Inflation, Interest Rates, & Rwanda.

The Tories only control one of them, & even with inflation, they wanted it <2%, & the latest numbers aren't that good, but hey, they're "Good Enough !"

All the time the Party are looking at the polls, & the trend, & then they take a shufty at their majority .....

As you say, they should have gone in May, but they didn't have Rwanda or Inflation to pitch to their supporters then, so instead they waited, & lost another few percent to Reform, & are now praying that they can claw back some of that over the next few weeks.

I hadn't noticed this before. Anyone legally resident (as long as they're not in prison) can vote in a UK general election as long as they're British, Irish, or a Commonwealth citizen. It seems you can use a passport from somewhere disqualified from voting in this election to prove you can vote in the election.

This oddity must arise from making a one size rule for voter ID. But depending on the election there's different rules on who can vote, sometimes it's anyone legally resident, other times on British/Irish/Commonwealth/EU citizens who are legally resident. A general election is the most restrictive and only British/Irish/Commonwealth. This year the Tories added the additional element of British citizenship conferring the right to vote for life regardless of residency (previously it was time limited to 15 years after last being resident), which runs counter to the general rule of residency being primary.

Totally not a mess.

I wonder what GB News guy is saying about the loonies. Oh ...

Wow! Extraordinary but true - some furious Conservative MPs are tonight working on a plot to CALL OFF the general election by replacing Rishi Sunak as leader before Parliament is dissolved next Thursday.
One rebel Tory MP tells me he believes “several” more letters of no confidence in Sunak have been submitted to 1922 chairman Sir Graham Brady.
The senior Conservative MP told me: “Today has clearly been an absolute disaster but the election is NOT irrevocable; up until the point of the Dissolution of Parliament - when the writs are moved to begin the contests, it can still be aborted.
“In other words, if enough Tory MPs, who are clearly going to lose their seats in this already utterly shambolic campaign, write to Sir Graham Brady, tomorrow , the election could still be revoked.”

I was under the impression that the one absolute power that the PM had was to call a GE; was I wrong ?

He doesn't need a vote of the house to call the GE, he just has to go to the Monarch & tell him that he's calling an Election, & that's that !

The constitutional position may be unclear on this. More than anything else though, the King may just tell them to piss off.

I think simply ousting Sunak wouldn't be enough, they would have to go thorough the process of electing a new leader, Sunak then has to go to the King to resign (and I'm sure he'll be taking the scenic route to the Palace if this happens) new pm needs to be sworn in and then finally they can ask his madge if he wouldn't mind kindly cancelling the election he just granted the day before.

So not only do they not have much time to get all this organised, it would be unprecedented in modern history and would be pretty humiliating for the king. I do hope they try it, such a stunt could give us that Canada style wipeout some of us are hoping for
