Springbok centre Lukhanyo Am has signed a contract extension with the Sharks.

Earlier this year, the Sharks captain was targeted by overseas clubs after SA Rugby enforced a 21-day contractual exit window during the Covid-19 lockdown.

However, the 26-year-old has opted to remain in Durban and it was confirmed on Monday that he has signed for the Sharks until 2022.

Am joined the Sharks in 2016 after a stint with the Southern Kings.

A World Cup winner with the Springboks in 2019, Am boasts 15 Test caps.
Now they need a 12.

That was a very good side. I'd probably say Am in for Waylon Murray, Ox in for Deon Carstens, Notshe for Kankowski. Mapimpi and Fassi on the bench?

Even the bench was stacked!

One cap as an emerging Springbok.

To think that Barritt and Kockett would go on to such successful careers with England and France, and Ackermann to be such a successful coach.

Someone actually put a photo of it happening, I'll try and dig it up. Happened in contact training.

In other news:
In a further blow for the Sharks, wings Sbu Nkosi (chest) and Madosh Tambwe (tight) and hooker Kerron van Vuuren (chest) are also struggling with injuries.

I really like that kid. He could turn into something really special, and is exactly the kind of lock the Sharks have been looking for.

I see Mvovo and JPP called time on their careers. To be honest I thought both had already retired anyway, but both will go down as Sharks greats.

REACTION: The Sharks are not willing to pay a transfer fee to obtain the services of World Cup-winning Springbok captain Siyamthanda Kolisi.

It was reported this week that Western Province had requested a transfer fee of ZAR1-million from the Sharks to release Kolisi from his contract.

Eduard Coetzee, Chief Executive Officer at The Sharks (Pty) Ltd, confirmed to @rugby365com that they had initiated discussions with Kolisi’s agent.

“We would like to have Siya as part of our team,” Coetzee said.

“We obtained permission from WP to talk to him [Kolisi],” he added.

However, Kolisi’s agent, Christian Abt, informed that Sharks that Province wanted a “transfer fee”, which the Sharks are not willing to pay.

Coetzee was unable to confirm the report that the amount of the transfer fee was ZAR1-million.

“Once we were told there was a transfer fee, we told the agent we would rather wait till Siya comes off contract [in October] or becomes a free agent,” the Sharks CEO told @rugby365com.

The media report that revealed WP’s request for a transfer fee suggested the announcement of Kolisi’s departure from Newlands would be announced this coming weekend.

Coetzee’s statement that they are willing to wait, suggests the announcement won’t be made for a while yet.

However, there is no doubt the Sharks believe Kolisi could be a valuable asset to the Durban-based franchise.

(Continue below video …)

The report of the move to the Sharks was based on Kolisi’s links with the franchise’s new partner, MVM Holdings

MVM Holdings, an international investment consortium spearheaded by the South African-born American lawyer Marco Masotti, entered into an agreement to purchase a 51 percent majority stake in the Sharks.

One of MVM Holdings’ partners is Vincent Mai, who has a very close relationship with Kolisi.

The Springbok captain was the first recipient of the Vincent Mai Bursary Scheme, which allowed him to attend the prestigious school Grey High in Port Elizabeth.

Kolisi also has a management deal with Roc Nation Sports International.

The company’s president, Michael Yormark, is also one of Masotti’s partners.

An odd take (even if facetious)? If they went and paid the fee when they didn't want to, because of MVM, then it would be valid?

Would also very much rather wait, I doubt there is very much rugby going to be played between now and 2022 that would require the addition.

Its kak funny....Kolisi's agent is part of the Sharks now , and they are negotiating Kolisi.....

I must say I was very dissapointed when Kolisi was confirmed as a potential Shark......I mean we really dont need passengers in the backrow...we need grunt.......

The general feeling amongst Sharks supporterss is that his image is what we are buying...so he can play 20 minutes a game and we will benefit from a lot more...

Kolisi is locked in as Springbok captain , Rassie will not be able to change that or he will have the nation ripping his throat open...so as a Sharks it will bring more of our boys into the bok squad and Rassies fantasies of keeping WP players employed through bok contacts will take a beating....

So his contract is up in October.

Yet they are asking for a R1,000,000 transfer fee.

A week after they released Jaco Coetzee from his contract for free.
