Water in petrol

A friend of my daughter took her car in for service on Friday. She complained about an intermittent warning light that she was getting (the car is only 171 so it's not an age thing). When she picked it up yesterday the garage told her that it was a problem with water in her petrol tank; they drained her tank & it was about 1/6 water. There was no obvious leak in the tank itself so the water had to have come in via the filler.

They said that one of the national chains (they did say which one) has had a problem with water content in their petrol. As it happens this woman buys almost all of her petrol in one of their garages because it's on her way home from work so the story had some credibility.

Has any of the Irish posters heard anything like this?

Is she sure it's not an ex-boyfriend pissing in her tank?

If it's happening one distributor, it would be happening all of them. They're all getting it from the same source at point of entry I'm led to believe.
Could be they had an issue at one of their other storage facilities but sounds very strange.

Ask her if her indicator is working and see if she says “yes,no,yes,no,yes,no”

1/6 petrol seems too much to come from a dodgy pump, much more likely the silly bag doesn’t close her cap properly and the regular rain in Ireland is getting in somehow.
