Safe to say this looms as the most exciting Mitre 10 Cup in years? Regardless of whether All Blacks end up being available, we have a host of players returning from overseas like Keiran Read, Julian Savea, Nasi Manu, Patrick Osbourne and more. Couple that with the usual crop of exciting youngsters and this shapes up as everything great about NZ provincial rugby - old pros coming up against the next generation.

Tasman would have to go in as favourites again you'd think, having added Mark Telea and Sevu Reece to an already stacked squad. Obviously, All Black availability could impact that.

Hope so, but their coverage has been a bit crap in the past.

Kayo's website says "selected matches", so who knows what that means.

I cannot understand the CRFU, Canterbury has named its Ranfurly sheild team for tomorrow afternoon but no mention anywhere on the 2020 M10 squad.

Yes it's very strange.

Here's the shield team:

Andrew Knewstubb, Chay Fihaki, Isaiah Punivai, Dallas McLeod, Manasa Mataele, Brett Cameron, Ere Enari, Cullen Grace, Billy Harmon, Liam Allen, Sam Darry, Luke Romano (captain), Tamaiti Williams, Brodie McAlister, Finlay Brewis.

Reserves: Shilo Klein, Scott Mellow, Fletcher Newell, Zac Gallagher, Bill Fukofuka, Luke Donaldson, Rameke Poihipi, Cameron Bailey.

Congrats to Romano on captaining Canterbury for the first time. It's also good to see Cullen Grace fit again, and Manase Mataele is a good pickup.

All Black availability will have a huge impact on Canterbury this year. Throw Mo'unga into this team instead of Brett Cameron plus the likes of Bridge, Ennor, Moody, and Taylor and they probably become favourites.

There are plenty of debutants there.

Congratulations to Luke Romano on the captaincy. What is Rameka Poihipi like? Any chance of him leapfrogging Brett Cameron in the pecking order?

Stuff missed out Josh Timu from Otago midfield options (unless the ODT is wrong).

Dr Victor Frankenstein's Tasman will clean up this year. Nelson is the Crusaders' waiting room.

Canterbury second, Auckland third.

The rest a rag tag bunch of battlers and journeymen.

Hmm good point. To save face I will put them at the top of my battlers and journeymen tier.

40-0 to Canterbury after 30 minutes.

Can they maintain this or will we see a mixed finish and 66-5 type score line?

That's a SR strength squad. It would easily win Super Rugby AU. When will NZR start taking its own salary cap seriously and stop allowing wealthy North Island glamour-provinces to shamelessly cook the books? This comp is now officially a sham.

It is a massive gap and from what I've heard from those who have participated it is the pace of the game that is the toughest thing for Heartland players to contend with.

Lets not forget these guys are just good club players who have the benefit of a few training runs before they're asked to take on the Ranfurly Shield holders, typically among the best the Mitre 10 Cup have to offer.

Canterbury were missing a host of All Blacks and Super Rugby players today but they were still able to call on the likes of Cullen Grace, Billy Harmon, Brett Cameron and Dallas McLeod.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some of the ITM Cup teams at the lower end take a few losses like that from the Northern glamour provinces too, to be fair. How does Tasman assemble such an amazing squad?

I don't want to overstate things but suffice to say North Otago try scorer Josh Hayward can look forward to free Speight's for life whenever he steps through the doorway of Oamaru boozers. Successful conversion taker Josh Phipps will have to pay, but only half price.

Nope. They're pretty good with Mitre 10, but they don't show early season Ranfurly Shield games or Heartland games.

No, I read a while back that the Heartland unions have organised local home and away fixtures with neighboring unions. From memory they are all going to play around 6 games. Not a proper season but at least they've play some Rugby.

No doubt the North Otago players, officials and supporters will long remember the day their local team graced the field with All Black Brett Cameron. I suspect he was mobbed by kids for autographs post-match?
Seeing as the match was played under Alert Level 2 restrictions with no spectators . . . he was not.
The poor children must have been devastated.
Brett Cameron’s OOS hasn’t been as good in years. That one day off from autograph duty has done wonders.

Once their parents explained to them who he was.

"Yes, Jaxon, he was an All Black!

So with the Heartland cancelled, I guess that was North Otago's one and only game for the year.
No, I read a while back that the Heartland unions have organised local home and away fixtures with neighboring unions. From memory they are all going to play around 6 games. Not a proper season but at least they've play some Rugby.
Correct. Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, North Otago and Buller have agreed a home and away series they are I believe calling the Hanan Shield series.

I have several questions.

1. Buller isn't part of the traditional Hanan Shield troika. What happens if they win it?
2. Why isn't West Coast involved?

That is all.

Funnily enough, Cameron looked very composed in the few minutes he got on the field for the ABs. More so than he's been for the Crusaders.

Counties' squad added to the OP. Kieran Read's return is obviously the major talking point.

Dalton Papali'i is also a good pickup, while Baden Kerr returns, and Luteru Laulala is back after missing last season with an ACL.
