Laporte: Springboks on verge of joining Eight Nations
Six Nations vice-president Bernard Laporte has revealed that the Springboks are advanced talks to join this Autumn's Eight Nations tournament following the Japanese withdrawal from the competition.
Plans by Six Nations officials to run a one-off eight-team tournament seemed to hit the rocks this week after it was reported that the Japanese will not travel to take part due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Japan – along with Fiji – were supposed to join up with the half-dozen Six Nations countries to play in a tournament that would replace the traditional November tours where southern hemisphere teams visit those in the north.

Laporte confirmed that Japan won't be one of the Eight Nations but he also revealed that the World Championship Springboks could be set to take their place.
"The Japanese will not come to Europe, he told us. We are looking for a nation to replace them. We are in advanced talks with South Africa. It would be great to be able to face the Springboks, world champions. in the title, but it's not yet done," told Le Progress in France.
The plan was for two groups of four, giving each country three group matches before a single round of finals would take place on the first weekend of December.
Group 1 was reportedly to consist of England, Ireland, Fiji and Wales, while Japan were set to join Scotland, Italy and France in Group 2. The Springboks joining the Eight Nations tournament would certainly be a huge draw for fans.
Georgia, who have been knocking at the door of the Six Nations for years, are also a possibility to replace the Japanese in the eight-team tournament, but would likely be gazumped by South Africa, if a deal can be brokered.
The Springbok involvement would cast further doubt on their own involvement in the Rugby Championship.
Former Rugby World Cup-winning coach Jake White cast doubt on the Springboks involvement in the Rugby Championship. The Bulls Director of Rugby White, in his weekly ‘No Holds Barred’ interviews series on the Bulls social media applications, hinted that the Boks may not be involved in the Rugby Championship.

No there isn't.
Per your article, this is for the one-off 8 Nations series this Autumn.
You're a potential second choice after Japan to make up the numbers and the 6 Nations trophy is definitely not in scope for anyone other than the actual 6 Nations teams who will be using some of these fixtures to try and finish this year's 6N tournament after it was interrupted.

So the SARU are now whoring themselves out to anyone who will take them? I thought they had more TV money then they could ever spend? I thought they were funding Rugby in both NZ and Australia with their TV riches? We've been told this for the last 25 years.

Another one who can't read. You won't be playing in the 6 Nations, this is for the 8 Nations this autumn. A one off.
The 6N trophy is not in play other than for the existing 6N teams who will be using some of these fixtures to play the matches that Covid postponed.

Good content. In the westpac time zone.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 2:22 pmJapan fit in well.
What exactly are you suggesting here - that the pacific rugby nations embrace a suitable time zone comp with Japanese teams, not to mention PRC teams (think about that - the betting market alone is immense), and other pacrim teams?
You actually might be on to something.

As I understand it, not all the teams will end up playing eachother.
Saffer desperation for validation is really bizarre.

Don't this happen in the biggest rugby competition also?sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 2:27 pm As I understand it, not all the teams will end up playing eachother.

What point are you trying to make? Are you alluding to the world cup? I think we're all well versed enough in the sniping and arguments that follow a RWC about who actually beat whom on the way to the final/title to know that perceived legitimacy is an issue there.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 2:57 pmDon't this happen in the biggest rugby competition also?sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 2:27 pm As I understand it, not all the teams will end up playing eachother.

We talk about it in the Heineken Cup too. Some of the quarter finals in years gone past have been more difficult than the semis and indeed the final. It's an inherent issue with the tournament format.
It must be said that you seemed to think that being included in the 8 Nations was better than 6 on the basis that you'd be playing (and beating in your mind) more teams.
ask them what?

It's basically the 6N though. And 8 Nations would be more prestigious than 6. I predict England vs SA final.sockwithaticket wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 1:13 pmAnother one who can't read. You won't be playing in the 6 Nations, this is for the 8 Nations this autumn. A one off.

Except it's not. Not every team will play each other, which is a drastic departure from the 6Ns format.Lemoentjie wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 4:24 pmIt's basically the 6N though. You lot must have a different definition of prestige. It's earnt over time, this is a thrown together one off that's basically a rebrand of the autumn internationals because marketing wonks think the mere word tournament confers instant legitimacy (it doesn't).

It is amusing that certain posters from New Zealand are becoming hysterical about South Africa leaving Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship yet they keep posting that they want us to leave.
Remember when one of them flounced and wanted his account deleted etc, then came squirming back.

Well done to South Africa and the UK. You guys are obviously so well on top of COVID-19 that you are able to organise events like this, and for the Springboks and Japanese to be able to fly in and fly out with ease, presumably with no quarantine restrictions to worry about? NZ and Australia are still trying to manage our COVID-19 outbreaks, but no doubt that Rugby fans here will be watching these games with interest.

All 6 nations wants the World Cup Champs in their competition
https://www.news24.com/sport/rugby/spri ... t-20200907
The Six Nations have reportedly unanimously thrown their support behind the idea to have the Springboks participate in the upcoming Eight Nations competition.
The Eight Nations tournament, with the teams divided into two pools, is set to start on 14 November following the conclusion of this season’s delayed Six Nations.
Initially, the contesting teams were the Six Nations sides along with Japan and Fiji, because New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina were not available to participate in the competition, as they are provisionally scheduled to play the delayed Rugby Championship in November and December.
But since Japan’s abrupt withdrawal from the eight-team tournament, organisers are rumoured to have entered into negotiations with SA Rugby to have the Springboks come on board in terms of participation.
According to a report in The Rugby Paper, the Rugby Football Union, Welsh Rugby Union, Scottish Rugby, Irish Rugby Football Union, the Italian Rugby Federation and the French Rugby Federation have unanimously thrown its support behind South Africa replacing Japan in the competition and are said to have joined forced in an attempt the bring the Boks to the fold with immediate effect.
‘South Africa want to play here this autumn,’ a source told The Rugby Paper. ‘They see it as the chance of a lifetime to get into the Six Nations, a no-brainer.
‘Bernard Laporte is therefore pushing against an open door. It’s being driven behind the scenes by England. They and Wales see that it makes commercial sense. The RFU are very confident that by November the Government will have eased restrictions on crowds to allow 30,000 at Twickenham.’
Of course the French will be against it, if we join it will mean one place lower on the log for them.
