Its becoming plain that in my middle aged dotage I am woefully out of touch.

But can someone explain the attraction of reaction videos.

There seems to be a whole subculture of young black americans producing these things.

Pink Floyd seems to be a particular favourite

But why?

I guess seeing someone else react the same way you did upon first hearing a much loved song gives you the impression of hearing it again for the first time

Pretty much. There's some that are just not very interesting, but others are very good. Watching black people react to Tim Minchen's song Prejudice is pretty good.

Also I've found vocal coaches reacting to some songs to be interesting, viewing it through the eyes of someone who really knows about this stuff is quite fascinating. One call the charismatic coach (I think) listening to the sounds of silence by disturbed is really nice, her expressions playing out on her face is quite something.

As someone who struggles to find others who like the same music I quite enjoy seeing reaction videos from people my sort of age to new songs that drop from my favourite artists. It's nice to see someone else get enthusiastic about it.

Beth Roars reacting to Corey Taylor (Slipknot) and Dustin Kensrue (Thrice) is a delight. She's clearly fangirling, but also explaining the technical aspects of what they're doing.

Hate them

They are firmly at the bottom tier of youtube content for me, but each to their own

Yeah, tbh I get a kick out of the way some of these folk react, it takes me back to the reaction I had when I first heard Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall. Its easy to forget how much of an impact music has on you in your youth, and seeing the first impressions of people who are the age I was when I first heard them is great.

I stumbled on these guys too recently. I think it was them who also reacted to Bohemian Rhapsody.....saying they've never heard the song

But there are some reaction videos/creators that are quite good.

I quite like Tara Simmons' commentary. She really knows her stuff, and is quite a nice presenter too.

Decent norks too....vocal coaches losing their shit watching Dimash is quite entertaining.

Absolutely top notch.

She also loses it with Pentatonix.... quite rightly so imho.

But her reaction to Pisces is hilarious. What I liked about that reaction though was, after the initial shock, she calmly talked about vocal techniques used by the artist.

Maybe it's just one other way of being in a 'community'? Alone in front of your comp, but having a 'shared experience' with some other people?

I've seen some of these, mostly "so and so reacts to sports thing they're unfamiliar with" and didn't see the appeal, personally.

I have, however, been watching quite a few vids by an ex-Marine reacting to military training videos, documentaries, etc. It seems from the comments that people like his channel not only because of his frank and fair assessment of what he sees, but that he doesn't do what others seem to do... make it all about him. I see in the comments people praising that he doesn't lead in or wax on with BS (esp, it seems, like full-of-themselves ex-SEALs) and justs let the video play, providing only occasional comments/questions for viewers. Others seem genuinely interested in what an average vet feels about vids they've already seen (esp those who say they're in or heading into service) or use his regular posts to discover docos they haven't seen yet (which I sometimes do).

He was NOT impressed with Canada's Baisc!

The Jinjer song?

If people who don't really listen to heavy music reacting it it is a a genre, singing coaches reacting to Pisces is at least a whole sub-genre on its own.

That's quite good - what did that prove? That they cam slightly jog in an air conditioned gymnasium, that they're human and not a 50 year old cripple?

Pretty much every singing coach on YouTube has done a reaction to that song.

There seems to be a preponderance of black guys going (rightfully) mental for Megadeth's Holy Wars...The Punishment Due.

There's something about Beth Roars that gives me the massive horn. Must be the voice/accent.

I first saw a "reaction" video when a guy was driving around listening to the first Rage Against The Machine" album, I liked it because it was new and he reacted pretty much the way I did when I first heard it in the early 90s.

There are a couple of guys who I like watching in their reaction to Chris Stapleton.

I guess it's about finding people who agree with you, we live in a time where IRL or In Real Life is an actual thing that people write because their life is largely online
