Rich countries are hoarding vaccines: 51% of doses reserved by 15% of world's population

I see New Zealand has secured enough vaccine for over 4 million people. What is their population number again?
Australia has secured over 134 million doses.
South Africa has secured enough to vaccinate 3 percent of our population. In what fucked up kind of world is this acceptable?

According to Statistics NZ, New Zealand's resident population provisionally reached 5 million in March 2020 so if we’ve got enough for over four million, that’s probably about right.
Why has South Africa secured such a small amount (relatively)?

Because 15 percent of the world's population are hoarding?

The new agreements give access to 7.6 million doses from AstraZeneca, enough for 3.8 million people, and 10.72 million doses from Novavax, enough for 5.36 million people. According to...
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... on-program
So NZ now has vaccine for 8 million.

Did you read the article that you linked there? If so, perhaps you missed this paragraph:
Ardern said the strategy has been to purchase different types of technology so that if some are found not to be as successful there are alternatives available. All vaccine roll out will be dependent on sign off from regulator Medsafe and the speed of manufacture.
So not "hoarding" but covering their bases in case one of the vaccines proves to be less successful.
Why hasn't the SA govt. secured a vaccine supply?

This is a strange thread. South Africa is a much bigger economy and has much more money than New Zealand. Surely they can secure as many vaccine doses as they want?

It would seem that countries like Australia and New Zealand have leveraged their "special relationship" with the USA to get a favourable position in the queue. Perhaps its a reward for being loyal allies in the many wars in oil rich countries around the world. I note with interest that besides Libya the "Coalition of the willing" don't seem to interested in helping Africa with its Islamic terrorism problem. Surely you could send some of your elite SAS peacekeepers to come and "practice" on the poor Africans like they did the Afghans. Plenty of africans with prosthetic legs, so good source of memorabilia and drinking vessels.
If this carries on, I'll let Zapp out of the basement.

Inconvenient truth? Typical response from the privileged developed countries to ignore the problem. Refugees, boat people. Why don't we build some prisons on an island and keep them there. Out of sight, out of mind.

It seems countries like Brazil and South Africa make great places for Big Pharma to run their tests and experiments. Pity they don't reward that.

Leverage their position with the US to secure vaccine from Astra Zeneca, a Swedish-British company whose vaccine was developed by a British University. Right.

I see nobody is addressing the inequity of 15 percent of the world's population hoarding 51 percent of the vaccine. It apparently is a bannable offence to talk about things like this. Also don't talk about Aussie SAS adventures or refugee islands. These things just like Chinese re-education camps for muslims simply don't exist.

Are you trying to say that serially incompetent governments like South Africa and Brazil were awake enough to get their orders in early?

We're part of Covax, nothing to do with ordering early. We get allocated a share after the rich white countries have secured theirs.

Not a lunatic. Just absolutely furious that my elderly vulnerable parents will be denied the vaccine while it seems certain countries will be hoarding surpluses way in excess of their requirements. And also why would Aus and NZ be in line ahead of say South Africa?

I have no idea, boet. This is your troll thread, you can do your own research. It's obviously got nothing to do with money given South Africa's economy is much bigger than NZ's.

Hi. It’s mainly because your country has been getting asked for months to come up with a coherent storage, distribution and implementation strategy and have failed to come back with a single plan. Ministers have not engaged with any of the potential suppliers and there are strong suggestions that those that have made contact have been asking for bribes - at least 2 of the manufacturers have offered the vaccine at far below market rate and still haven’t had a serious reply.
Rwanda, for example, has put money aside to buy vaccine and is quite far down the road in terms of setting up a credible strategy for distribution and is getting vaccine.
Africa gets treated like shit, but maybe look a little closer to home on this one

Vaccine trials don’t have remuneration, that’s standard. And you have to test it where there’s a significant prevalence of the virus. So SA, Brazil, USA.

Hang on. SA were probably the first country outside Asia to get a proper testing process into the field way back in May. Medicine in SA is still very good, despite Govt corruption and incompetence.

No argument about SA’s history in medicine, but they have been utterly shite in planning for the vaccination process
