I found the trouble with providing the parses is that by the time I slowly typed it in in, someone else answered that clue and about 6 others!

Well it always seems that the grids earlier in the week are easier then getting more tricky by Friday, so the Monday one should be a good place to dip your toes into.

I've been caught out very often! Agreed that Monday is usually the easiest but the prize one on Saturday is often not too difficult.

For a start perhaps, try looking for anagrams - not necessarily solving them but spotting them.

Looks for words with a meaning like: broken (up), out of order, chaotic, reassembled, in pieces, moved etc, etc etc.

Next step is to work out which words and letters make up the anagram. Some will have a letter or two added or taken away.

Next up is words which are a run of letters inside the clue itself.

It is quite tricky sometimes to know which part of a clue is the clue and which is the definition - that just has to come with practice.

Start with small steps and you might find you have an affinity for cryptics more quickly that you'd think.

Not always about education but an ability to remember useless facts!
I know a lot of useless facts! In fact more useless facts than useful facts...

But I shall continue to observe... until one day... I may be able to correctly guess one... though I would say 50% of the words in the spoiler answers, I have not heard of before. Must have a small vocabulary.

(And to be fair I find normal crosswords hard enough!)
Despair you not (a bit of Yoda).

Fellas. We need to provide the parses. I confess to being the worst at this. We need to give Grandpa a bit of a lift. (I used to design them)!

You meet a decent sort of poster on these threads Grandpa. Very pleased to have you in the "team".
That would be great. Might attract others as well then?

I think it's a mindset.. once you pick up the wavelength, you are away....

Thanks for the welcome anyway :)

From today's cryptic (not the toughie!)

7A Idiot is some dumb one he admitted (8)

Definition = idiot
Clue - some > indication that a run of letters from the next part provide the answer ( dumB ONE HE ADmitted )

20A same principle, Mostly heart if I cease deviousness (8)

Definition = deviousness
Clue = mostly indicating run of letters again ( heART IF I CEase)

Thanks. Those two make perfect sense...
