Watling also not available, back injury apparently, so Blundell will keep.

Black Caps ring the changes

New Zealand: 1 Tom Latham (captain), 2 Devon Conway, 3 Will Young, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Tom Blundell (wk), 7 Daryl Mitchell, 8 Neil Wagner, 9 Matt Henry, 10 Ajaz Patel, 11 Trent Boult

We lose the toss and England to bat.

It's been a long time since we fielded such a raw test side. Conway, Young, Mitchell, Patel...barely a handful of caps between them.

Look - if you're not going to allow me to make wild generalisations about the performance of one played in the test arena based on his limited overs performances for NZ in a few games - then I'm not even sure if this conversation can continue.

England are batting so he’ll at least get into day 2 of a second test in a row with injuring himself.

So England make their first 50 run first innings stand in England since 2018.

First time in a decade they've gone the first session without losing an opener in a home test!

I'd certainly like to be proved wrong, but I'm starting to feel that Rob Key's disparaging opinion of the NZ bowling is probably on the money.

Nortje gets the breakthrough and then a second. Surely he need to be the new ball bowler with Rabada now?

Overcast morning in England against the most English of foreign attacks, but a promise of hotter on subsequent days. Best bat first and make sure we pick two out and out pacemen and no spinner.
