B&I Lions vs SA A Lions match thread
Scrum halves dummying at the base/maul annoys the hell out of me. The ref's nearly always give them a warning too, like they don't bloody remember from being told not to do it in the previous 20 weeks.
Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
I mean we could pretend it is but both sides missing plenty players that will be starting in 10 days for the actual series that SA will win.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 7:34 pmShows the difference between training & a test; & lets not pretend this isn't the 1st full test.

Used to be the signature move of Richard Hill the elder, followed by pointing at whichever donkey had fallen for it and stepped offside.
There are a number of laws that I find puzzling and this is one of them. Why not allow a scrumhalf to dummy and mess with the defense?
For all the praise Nige got for addressing 'soccer' antics and the like, not even he (maybe once in all the matches I saw him blow) gives straight pens/fks for stuff like this, including cheeky comments/back chat, etc. It's a verbal warning(s), at best. These things have been in the laws forever.
I joke about it a lot, but it does seem like refs want to be the players' buddy giving the inches the players make miles out of... probably would ask the ref if he can do their homework as well!
Happy with Van Staden’s outing. Solid replacement for Flouw on the Bomb Squad bench.
Don’t think Dweba cracked the starting 23 ahead of Bongi and Marx, but he is a solid backup hooker. Took his opportunity well.
Can we PLEASE kick Elstadt to the curb now. He can’t replace PSDT at blindside, and he isn’t a very good lock either. He just concedes penalties. NJvR has already shown more in 2 carries than Elstadt in his last 2 Bok outings.

When I reffed kids games, I used to march them back ten, or reverse decisions if I got lip; & I'd like to see it used way more often when it's adults on the pitchNiegs wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 7:41 pmFor all the praise Nige got for addressing 'soccer' antics and the like, not even he (maybe once in all the matches I saw him blow) gives straight pens/fks for stuff like this, including cheeky comments/back chat, etc. It's a verbal warning(s), at best. Boks have not scored in the second half.
Our backline is disjointed and all out workhorse forwards have been subbed
Very disappointed in Morne Steyn today.
Shows some evolution in his game on his rerun to the Bulls, but none of that on display today.
Yes, service was slow and linespeed was good, but still. Disappointing.
Faf too. Failed to regulate tempo, poor execution on kicks…and a yellow card to boot.

Really good game. Plenty of mistakes, and I'm sure a lot of tactics held back on both sides.
Hmm, well, great to have a decent game, really enjoyed it.
What do we take from it?
Front 5 seems, surprisingly, pretty even. Wyn Jones had a good game. The front rows that didn’t play for the Lions probably still the starters despite some good displays. Looks like the test 2nd row.
Back row. Navidi really good, Curry fine. Did we have an 8? I’d have Watson and 2 others
At least we know who our half backs shouldn’t be.
Harris starts.
No idea about the rest. If Hogg is fit he plays. LRZ was better than expected but still wouldn’t have him starting

All the money you made will never buy back your soul
Not a good game, but I’m sure both coaches learned more from this match than any of the other warmups.
Exposed a lot of weaknesses.
Boks will need to up the aggression and physicality. Lions won’t be able to handle it, but need to seriously cut down the penalties. Can’t let all that work go to waste and lose all that momentum.
Scrums are a worry. We need Frans Malherbe back stat.
Morne might not be a good backup for Pollard after all. Big worry at 10.
Missing Duane Vermeulen a lot. Wiese has been so-so. I’d actually not mind starting a MvS, PSDT, Kolisi trio in the test.
Van Staden, Janse van Rensburg and Dweba all took their opportunities well. Made a good impression.

I'd have slight variation
LRZ at good
Harris mid tier+
Currie at Poor/meathead
Single out Farrell as 'shout at screen' poor.
Other than that I'd agree
