Was so genuinely excited this morning. Can't see how we get through the last 20 now. Pretty abject stuff all round.

I thought bad light would ride to the rescue but looks fairly bright there now. I still think there’s enough there with Buttler and Robinson to see the day out.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 4:27 pm Was so genuinely excited this morning. If these two keep their heads then they should be able to do this. Only 18 overs left.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 4:31 pmThe weather round here is if anything getting better.ScarfaceClaw wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 4:31 pmI thought bad light would ride to the rescue but looks fairly bright there now. Yeah, it is a bit early but I had prowler issues and no way I am going back to sleep.

Even if England do survive this, they should not be exultant they survived 2 sessions on a placid pitch

That’s livened up the last eight overs.

And that’s a blow. Buttler gone now. Pammy Anderson to save the day?

Pammy loses his off stump. India win by 151 runs.

Some turn around from India to take that.
Digging in deep yesterday afternoon, bored the fuck out of me,
today a bit of luck with tale enders putting up a solid score from nowhere,
Aggressive declaration to give themselves an outside chance,
dropped catches nearly haunting Koli
and DRS proving it's worth.
What drama.

Really good test match but England were awful today. Not sure but i think only extras got them over 100.
No, some twats trying to get into cars parked in the street (and in my case right outside my bedroom window as I am up a longish driveway). We are having an epidemic of this sort of behaviour at the moment.ScarfaceClaw wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 5:30 pmProwler issues? As in someone trying to get in the house?

The momentum shift starting with the Indian tail wagging followed by the surprise declaration was palpable. England's answer was to try and block it out in traditional test manner and they simply don't have that in their locker. Once Kohli went on the attack like that a better bet would have been to try and counter punch - having Butler and Bairstow open might not (probably wouldn't) have worked but at least it might have knocked India back a bit.

You saw the very best of Joe Root in this test. And also the very worst. Brilliant batter who single handedly kept England in it. And then just lost all control of the English attack and tactics this morning. The bowlers lost it and just spent the whole morning trying to bounce/hit/pay back the Indian tail. As a captain he should have recognised that and sorted it out.Saint wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 7:23 pm The momentum shift starting with the Indian tail wagging followed by the surprise declaration was palpable. TBF, he's not alone as an England captain in that regard. In my memory, the only English Test captain that has controlled his bowling attack is Michael VaughanScarfaceClaw wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 8:46 pmYou saw the very best of Joe Root in this test. Joe Root is one of England's best players of the modern era. He is also an atrocious captain. Issue is that there is no viable replacement. Harsh to criticise after the way he batted and the nonsense from the rest of the top order, but that game swung on our awful tactics before lunch yesterday.

What a Test match and shows why this is by far the best format of the game.
1) Root's captaincy. People accused Cook of having no feel for captaincy. Root's crime was not that he got the tactics wrong (as he later admitted) but that
- he applied no tactics at all. Instead of bowling at the wickets at tail enders who averaged 3, he allowed the Eng attack to get embroiled in Grumpy Anderson's retribution for the treatment he received in Eng's 1st innings.
Note the Indians made no such mistake when bowling back at Anderson.
- and worse. Far worse. When that was failing and the win was going away from England, he did not adapt at all. A declaration FFS from the position India were in when Pant went early.
2) Someone will have to explain Burns to me. Hard to see a Test batting future for a guy who seems hell bent on emulating Peter Willey's stance (Chanderpaul is the only one I can think who made any success of being weird) and worsening it with
a head position not over the line of bat or ball. Who was the county cricketer of old (Asian descent) who also batted as if the bowler was approaching from square?

If the rest of the Pakis. could catch like Butt, they would have won. These 2 sides are so erratic, it's exciting in a kind ofInsane_Homer wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 8:12 am Eng v Indian yesterday was boring shit compared to this one...

England should take note of this stat:
ZERO instances of West Indies losing a Test when chasing of target of 200 or less. In 62 such chases, they have won 56 and drawn six.

Not who you refer to but Shivnarine Chanderpaul has a bloody strange stance and made a success of itTorquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 7:54 am 2) Someone will have to explain Burns to me. The lad had a very unorthodox technique and an awkward-looking stance. It was a front-on stance, with his body standing at the 90-degree-angle of the conventional batting position. His bat generally rested right in between his legs, his shoulder was stood right in front of the square-leg umpire & his chest faced the bowler.

Just confirms again that Hasan Ali is a thoroughly unlikeable player. My least liked current player by a mile. Paine the only fella that gets closeInsane_Homer wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 8:12 am Eng v Indian yesterday was boring shit compared to this one...

Extraordinarily bad. To go with Curran's becoming the only player ever to manage a King pair at Lords.Sibley and Burns became the first England openers ever to be dismissed for nought in the same innings of a home Test in 531 matches. It also took England to 17 ducks by the top four in a calendar year, breaking their own record set in 1998.
Only one other team in Test history had ever declared after lunch on the final day and forced a victory.

Yep, sorry phrased that very badly ( site is shitted though so couldn't edit it! ). The pic illustrates Chanderpaul and I meant I have no idea who the other one was you mentioned.
Fawad Alam seems to match the description though ( at 14 secs)?
Fawad's setup is weird, but he gets into an almost-orthodox line by the time the ball is delivered.
Chanderpaul played French-cricket style until the ball hit his bat, especially in the last 2-3 years of his career. Bonkers.

Peter Willey:
Also famously quoted in

and
"Lillee caught Willey bowled Dilley"
Never saw him but Basharat Hussain (Notts?) comes to mind.Torquemada 1420 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 7:54 am What a Test match and shows why this is by far the best format of the game.

By rights neither Burns nor Sibley should be retained. Burns averages a touch over 31, Sibley around 28 with slightly fewer matches under his belt. But at least with Burns, the longer he stays in the more likely he looks like he will stay longer and score. Sibley just looks like he's going to get himself out the same way all the time.
One other stat from the match - only the second time in all tests that a team has won having declared after lunch on the final day
