Nasa postponed a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) that was originally planned for Tuesday due to a medical issue involving one of the astronauts.

The space agency said in a blog post on Monday that the spacewalk involving Nasa astronaut Mark Vande Hei and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide was postponed following a “minor medical issue” involving Vande Hei.

While it did not disclose further details, Nasa said the “issue is not a medical emergency.”
Got me wondering ...

Just how unpleasant, (for all aboard), would it be to get something like explosive diarrhoea, or projectile vomiting, while in the space station ?
A shitcart of astronomical proportions...
It'd be doubly horrible; as, as the shit went one direction; it would be propelling the unfortunate astronaut in the opposite.

You can't even crack open a window to let out the smell

Very sad tale, this:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... -into-coma

Ex-France centre-half John-Pierre Adams went for a relatively routine knee operation in 1982 but, due to having too much anaesthetic administered, has been in a coma for almost 40 years. His wife looked after him for all that time, refusing euthanasia.

He died today.

There is a more detailed report on the BBC

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58463792

His wife sounds like a quite remarkable woman, but this bit really makes your blood boil:

On the day of Adams' operation [in 1982] to repair a damaged tendon in his knee - suffered while on a coaching training camp - many staff at the hospital in Lyon were on strike.

His operation still went ahead, with the anaesthetist looking after eight patients, including Adams, at the same time. Adams was supervised by a trainee, who later said: "I was not up to the task I was entrusted with."

Between the anaesthetist and trainee, numerous errors were made, causing Adams to suffer a cardiac arrest and brain damage.

It wasn't until the mid-1990s that the anaesthetist and trainee were punished - a one-month suspended sentence and a 750 euro fine

If you ever needed a thread to show what brain washed cabbages; that Apple fan bois are; have a look at some of the comments under this article ....

https://www.macrumors.com/2021/09/06/ge ... e-updates/
Smartphone makers like Apple and Google should be required to provide security updates and spare parts for their mobile devices for at least seven years, according to new environmental responsibility proposals from the German government to the European Union

The European Commission recently proposed that mobile device manufacturers should provide software updates and spare parts for five years, with tablet spare parts available for six years. It also wants to force manufacturers to publish the prices of the spare parts and ensure they don't increase, and deliver said parts in no more than five working days.

However, Germany wants the EU to go further by demanding seven years of updates and spare parts availability. In addition, it wants manufacturers to offer spare parts at "a reasonable price," and faster delivery of spare parts, a point it wishes to discuss further with the Commission.
Security, yes. Repair parts, maybe not so much. Apple could probably do it, but android makers don’t build in the same quantity that Apple does.

I really dislike the EU dictating to American companies.
Many of this good intentioned laws ignore the complexity of systems and unforeseeable negative consequences. Of course, this law can have clear negative effects on consumers. The most obvious (not the only) one with this kind of regulation is hindering innovation: you end up with “dinosaur” markets where the smallest screw is regulated.
Guess only time will tell if mobile devices will reverse back to the 1990s when laptops are at least 3 times current price range. Part of the reason for those price (back then) was the Operating Costs for extensive parts storage as well as lack of economy of scale to run small quantity parts production when sudden surge runs the existing stock dry (esp. entering the 4-5th year). Back then, some laptop manufacturers had a 7 or 10 years parts available policy. But the parts are damn costly due to several factors.

Good luck EU. Ever wonder why the same iPhone retails at higher price in US and EU than some parts of the world? And maybe rest of the world if manufacturers decide to penalise all consumers in blanket policies instead of only those in EU.
Have any of these cretins ever wondered how Apple came to become the most valuable company on the planet ?

Do they have even the vaguest idea what their profit margins are ?

Or even what Engineering justification there is for filling ever sqr mm of space inside Apples products with sticky glue; that makes replacing parts all but impossible ?

One thing we have to thank Bill Gates and Microsoft for is the prevalence of the WIMP in modern computers.

Jobs and Wozniac tried to tie the mouse driven gui up with patents and went after other systems like Atari, Amiga and Commodore for using a similar interface.

They sued Microsoft in 1988, but Microsoft countersued and won.

The fact that the GUI was previously developed by Xerox (who failed to patent it, fortunately) was a big reason for the loss.

Not worth a thread, but I've been getting emails for someone with the same name as me. It's happened in the past, but this time it's car purchase and insurance details. In chasing them down (now I have more details), I've managed to find another person with the same name, in the right location, but the wrong person. Pass them on the phone number (I'm not paying international fees to call him), to get the 3rd doppleganger to get in touch via email (christ that can go wrong!) to try and get him the emails he should be getting   .

Just trying to confirm that it's the right one this time :D.

I have somebody using my email addy for her purchases from a clothing outlet (I think) called Shein.com. My initials are the same as hers and her street name (in the States) is the same as my surname.

There is no way I can get in touch with them or her without registering as a customer.

So, in the mean time, every time she orders oversize women's clothing, I get the flipping tracking numbers, delivery details and requests to fill in a fucking form to let them know how brilliant I thought their service is.

They don't have my email address as such. They mis-record the other fellas address, and end up sending his emails to me. Until today I had no way to contact him directly, as none of it had his contact details.

If you have her name and address you might be able to find her on facebook to let her know. I started my hunt on facebook, which got me to someone with the right name and location, just not the right person, thankfully with the phone number, I asked him to message to other one for me, and he was kind enough to do so.

Nah, I've talked to him now, he's going to get hold of the companies. And I guess whenever he gives his email address over the phone/written down again, he's going to be more explicit to try and not get it wrong.

Ah balls, can you see her friends list? Any photos at all? I occasionally need to research people, and even if they have high security settings, you can still see a photo, and a photo has likes, and once you can see those, you can at least see people that can contact her on your behalf.

That was a great vid, and I don't want to diminish it at all because this is the same discussion, only further, once you get out of our solar system, the scale becomes very difficult to comprehend

On the same theme, the asteroid belt, which contains many millions of asteroids (it is estimated that there are between one and two million asteroids more than half a mile across, plus untold millions of smaller ones) is often portrayed as being a densely populated part of the solar system

Image

In reality, the average distance between asteroids in the belt is 600,000 miles, and collisions between larger asteroids happen on average once every 10 million years. The chances of a spacecraft accidentally colliding with an asteroid is one in a billion.
