There was more to it than that, though. The SRU were hopelessly skint when the game went pro, as they had just rebuilt MF. There was no money to fund pro rugby properly. The IRFU had failed to do anything much about Lansdowne Rd at that point and were able to put in the money. The Irish provinces had some early success and were able to build a supporter base, and kicked in from there.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 8:25 amIt's an especially odd viewpoint given that it is almost exactly what was done at the advent of professionalism, and it was a disaster that set back Scottish rugby by twenty odd years. I can only assume there is a market that laps this kind of thing up as they just drone on and on with their shitty opinions ad infinitum.
The only reason there is a vacancy at all is that one of the top jobs in Scotland has been filled by a Scottish guy. However, who really cares - whilst its nice to see a Scottish coach make it that should only ever be on merit. Surely the point is to be the best we can possibly be at rugby at both club and international level, not to give jobs to the boys which has always been my main criticism of Scottish Rugby administration.
As an aside, all these lads that apparently are good enough to be pro coaches but aren't being offered jobs due to their nationality, the world's richest two leagues are in neighbouring countries. Why not try for a (very well paid) job there and then come back and take an SRU job when you have the experience and skills required.
What could have been.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Not too bad but looks more like a training shirt than match top without the collar.
Big no no on the logo - looks weirdly cut off at the bottom without the word Scotland under it.

Timing was also key in external factors for Ireland. Rugby turned professional around the same time that there was a growing amount of disposable income in Ireland as the economy blossomed. People with that money, and companies that were establishing themselves in Dublin in particular, were looking for entertainment. There's no other sport in Ireland where they compete at club level against other professional clubs, either domestically or cross border. So there was a massive willing fanbase waiting to be give them money.Yr Alban wrote: ↑Wed Sep 08, 2021 5:50 pmThere was more to it than that, though. Mikey Blair's first team (and first game at the ERS).
Bit surprised we are struggling for locks already. There's a decent team just about in that injury list.

I think that starting paring is the future for Edinburgh, Sykes came on to a really strong patch of form towards the tail end of last season and Hodgson was impressive every time he played.
Pierce Phillips was with Agen, iirc and Daniel Suddon is in the Southern Knights side, I can't say I know anything more about either of them.
Gilcho is obviously being held back but that injury list before we even start is alarming.
We had a terrible time with injuries last season, we're due a bit of a change in fortunes there.
Aiming for the Stormers match also
All the money you made will never buy back your soul
I thought that run of games in the Rainbow Cup was really valuable for Sykes, he needed a couple of games to get up to speed with senior rugby and then he started to get really stuck in - helps that he's a big unit.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 7:47 am

It's been a while since we've seen Toolis and I think we miss him more than we miss Gilcho. He's a real point of difference in the set piece at league level.
At least you have a nice new stadium to rustle your sweetie papers in

give me a shout if you're around for a beer.

Very keen - I've been here for getting on 4 years and still not met any of you fine men. Only stumbling block is we've recently adopted two little'uns and not quite in a place where we can take Saturdays off. Might be a different case in month's time?
I've not renewed season ticket as just won't be able to go that often, assume tickets won't be that hard to come by.
Congratulations!inactionman wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 2:00 pmVery keen - I've been here for getting on 4 years and still not met any of you fine men. Yeah, things will be totally different in a months time, no stress, no tiredness, plenty of spare time, see you then!

We had three ankle biters with four years between the oldest and youngest, the first couple of winters are hard going because they don't get to run about as much as they do in the summer.
You'll get there, it's amazing how resilient and able to function on sleep deprivation you become .
and, from an earlier post, you've been an Embra season ticket holder, this will be a breeze in comparison.
Congratulations btw.

I have my season ticket so should be at most games. If there’s a cabal I can slip away from my normal group to grace you all with my presence. No independence talk permitted, if it starts to go that way someone needs to just start talking about Jordie Barrett kicking people in the face and they should have cracked down on dirty jumping bastards when that Welsh cunt split Chris Patterson’s kidney.

Same. Went to Montpellier and Toulon a couple of years ago, fantastic despite getting tear gassed in Toulon.Slick wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 3:26 pmNo away game in France? NY resolution was to go to away games in France!Tichtheid wrote: ↑Fri Sep 10, 2021 2:59 pm Challenge Cup

My granny used to say of my granddad that he’d watch kids playing football in the park, jumpers for goalposts. He’d go to Hampden but he preferred junior football.
I’m similar with rugby, I’ll watch anything
I’m much the same with watching it in person but find myself getting distracted with some games on TV. The Watsonians team appealing every decision is doing my head in a bit as well
Edit: no idea who the female co commentator is but she is really good

Rhona something, she’s the Nails’ women and girls co-ordinator they said.
Aye she knows her stuff
