I actually think that England, more than just about any other nation, need a coach from the home country.

The next one needs to be English. The main criteria for the next one must be that they come from the Premiership. Jones has poisoned the link between the England setup and the Premiership DoRs. He's got zero respect for them and the feeling is reciprocated.

I actually think ex-NZ coaches would be good for England for the simple reason that NZ produces so many great players. Picking from a huge player pool presents very different challenges to picking from a very small player pool. This is one of the fundamental reasons why Jones has turned to shit imho.

Steve Hansen then? :lolno:

They wanted Wayne Smith for a while... but he's better as an assistant coach rather than the main guy... but him and someone else...

Hansen would be ok, certainly multiple levels above Jones.

I'd hate to see him leave but the best coach in the Premiership is Mark McCall. Dean Richards would also be good.

I'd prefer an English coach to coach England but it wouldn't be my first criteria.

I suspect the level above club would find Baxter out.

Yes, I suspect it would. Will be interesting how he manages and turns round the Chiefs mixed start to the season.
Not sure he'd want to be away from the family farm too much either.

I'd prefer an English coach, but a coach who understands English rugby is fine. Very bored of the cultural cringe of sticking someone with an antipodean accent into English set ups just because.

A lot of the time the RFU seem to be appointing the opposite of the predecessor:
Ashton brought in to provide a bit more flair and running rugby after Robinson's stodge
Jonno to provide someone who commands the respect of the players
Lancaster to ensure there was no repeat of dwarfgate etc, to focus more on development etc
Jones to bring a bit more backbone and grit

So we'll go for Baxter or someone that people like then chuck him for a more aggressive character a few years later.

I'd just like a coach that believes that the best English Rugby Union players are capable of playing good attacking rugby.

I'm fed up of:
* Playing negative, kick & hope rugby on the basis that we're culturally only fitted to defense, mauling & scrummaging.
* Picking mediocre players because they are "test match animals"
* Parachuting in players from NZ/Aus because they've played Super Rugby so they must be better than any English equivalent
* Parachuting in English RL players because RL is just somehow intrinsically so much better that it being a different sport with important differences in skills and tactics is irrelevant

Chiefs had a similarly mixed start to the season before one of their titles. He's probably not unduly worried.

He himself has shown no appetite for the England job and some of his past statements on the matter suggests he's well aware of the differences between being a Prem DoR and the national head coach, that his approach to the former might not apply to the latter.

According to an article in The Times at the weekend, the main delay has been caused by a lack of cooperation from the SARU.

On the subject of employees that are hard to control, Rassie Erasmus, the director of rugby at the South African Rugby Union (SARU), finally goes before a World Rugby disciplinary today after his 62-minute video assassination of the refereeing in the first British & Irish Lions Test in the summer.

Yes, it is now three months since the video went live — three months in which the referee that day, Nic Berry, has been left hanging out to dry.

It is no secret that World Rugby has been frustrated with the pace with which it has been able to bring Erasmus to a hearing. It would have been respectful if SARU had expedited that process.

Indeed, it would have been ideal if SARU itself had brought Erasmus to book. Or at the very least suggested that it didn’t approve of his behaviour. Yet Jurie Roux, the SARU chief executive, appears to have no control over Erasmus, or is loath to wield it.

You would just hope that, if the situation were in England, and Jones had committed such a crime, the RFU would have policed him itself. I genuinely believe it would.

Can't really see anything funny about it - it's just - noise. Next to no information or insight, bit of pointless emotion. Could have been posted here by one of the less interesting posters.

It's a dreary example of how pointlessly mediocre rugby reporting is in the UK, but we knew that anyway.

Rassie's case fizzliing out, taking months to do so.

Mark Dodson's comments during the World Cup led to a £70k fine in double quick time.

What was it that Dodson said that upset World Rugby so much?

Perhaps when World Rugby are finished with apologising to Rassie, they can turn their attention to pitch invaders in the NH which appears to be a much bigger problem.

It is a concern for sure.

But it also seems the officials are still intent on screwing the Boks over every chance they get:

I’m not serious, but it really was a super pedantic call by the officials.

Maybe it is just my impression, but somehow whenever the boks score a try on the counter attack the match officials find a way to overrule the on-field decisions these past month. Weren't there 3 such instances against the Lions alone, now another one yesterday, probably more during the RC?!

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you”

But honestly, the Boks play a game that is dependent on chaos disrupting the opposition defense…be it a box kick or a midfield bomb.

When there is that much chaos, referees also get flustered and want to make sure, so they refer to the TMO. In any given moment on a rugby pitch, if you look really hard, you can probably find 2-3 offenses. So the more referrals, the more disallowed tries are likely.

When we do (rarely) score tries from conventional turnovers or ruck play, they are typically not referred and they stand.

The key really has become to avoid referrals to the TMO because once it goes upstairs it’s a 50/50.

For what it's worth that video clearly shows Marx advancing towards the ball from an offside position. Penalty offence.

Slightly pedantic, yes and he then retreats. But they are making a call for a try.
