Let's face it, they are all full of it so it is best to read all of them if a story interests you, including the national ones of the related places and then try to decipher the truth. Mix it up with some good independent media sources and the truth maybe found between the lot.
To say the BBC, AJ, CNN, France 24 etc.. and leave it at that is a very wrong approach to having the first idea what is going on in the world
You have time to read all news sources

Are there any independent media sources you would recommend? In my experience they tend to be quite small scale so are subject to the world view of a small number of people. Some of course provide a platform for freelance journalists, but they can be a bit niche in their coverage.
Depends on the story and don't be afraid to go to the think tanks as long as you balance it out with the polar opposite sources. I have been known to read israeli papers, the hermitage foundation and socialist papers on the same topic to grasp all the views in my quest to understand.

I do have time to read all these sources, as I don't really do TV and if the event/story grabs my attention then I take pleasure in reading the different views.

The Global Times is an excellent newspaper that clearly states the rights and wrongs of the world.
For Australian news I read the Betoota advocate and listen to Marto on triple M.
Trust me I'm not making this up.

Yes I enjoy looking for contrary sources. I always check out the Sydney Morning Herald during an Ashes series against Oz

I dip into the US heavies sometimes and look for contrarian views elsewhere when I can’t understand what they could possibly be thinking!

Funny enough, The Global Times is a interesting source mainly because it is the mouthpiece of the Chinese communist party. If there is a big China story, like recently, it is always worth a look at the editorial as it is a carefully worded piece on what the they say in response. All of these sources have a place as long as you read them understanding what postion they are looking to defend. Reading it doesn't mean approval at all.

I should have mentioned that I read the Global times in parallel with either the Telegraph, Australia or Hindustan times depending on the stories location. Pure comedy to see the spin masters assuming our level of intellect. The SCMP used to be good for Asia but the latest laws have definitely killed it as a neutral resource.

It's also good to look for the genuine source of things as well, e.g. look for the scientific paper rather than a newspaper's interpretation of it, or go and look at the actual published statistics instead of one person's spin on them.

Yeah, it's a justification for having badly informed opinions and then using the phrase 'I've got a right to express my beliefs'

I was curious about that story and was looking into it. There is a view that the vast majoirty of HKers totally disagree with the protestors and the whole thing is made a far bigger deal then what it is over here, seems Macao has had a similar law for over a decade an it has not caused any problem. I was curious why the media gave the story so much airtime during a pandemic and after the lack of support at the UN against it.

Still, it is an unfolding story so we will see who is right over the next few months, the offer to 3 million still stands by the UK government so it will be intereting so see how many take it up. China not recognising the BNO passports shouldn't matter if the person is taking their one way flight here.

As a westerner I can't appreciate how Asians can buckle down and tolerate poor political situations. I'm theorising at this point that it is a pure survival instinct that has probably always been required in this region. Similar things however happened with religion in the soviet union but emerged as if unaffected when the seasons changed.
The levels of indoctrination that have been achieved over 40-50 years however will always be hard to combat by western ideals or values. It isn't a surprise that the CCP dominates the chinese media and sees this as key to its survival.

It happens everywhere. We have indoctrination here too.

We blindly believed the government all the way through this covid thing and worship the NHS when in fact it just isn't very good. We have an inflated view of ourselves and never question that maybe, just maybe, some of the forigen policy decisions may be central to some international issues.

Speak for yourself. This hasn't been the case in both directions - people social distancing, working from home and wearing masks before it was government mandated, while now being reluctant to get back normal because experts are still urging a good deal more caution than the government. At the other end of the spectrum we have our share of people who refuse to wear masks, can't be arse with social distancing and think the whole thing's been exagerrated.

The biggest piece of cognitive dissonance with NHS support is those who've professed their support in recent months yet have actively undermined it by ensuring a Tory government for the last decade.

Oh for goodness sake. No government can save the NHS in its current form, its totally anachronistic and needs a complete overhaul of how its funded. "It's their fault" just kicks the can down the road.

Well we can disagree here. I think the biggest casualty of Covid has been the nations credibilty. I try not to think about it now as it is depressing but it is quite clear that the UK is a crap nation that is full of bluff and bluster. I don't take out leaders seriously and cringe when i hear the bluster of people saying how great we are. I suppose this was at the back of my mind for a few years when I traveled and seen how things are in other places, but Covid now and just confirmed it. The media here is a complete pravda machine.

I don't take our leaders seriously either, their and the nation's crediblity was gone long before covid. I only took issue with you assertion that collectively we've believed the government when that's simply not the case for many.

There are absolutely things which are directly their fault like cutting the nurses training bursary then looking on in surprise as problematic nurse staffing levels continue. Brexit completely failed to acknowledge the extent to which the NHS is staffed by EU migrants (also a failure of Remain to highlight this effectively), nor does there seem to be a plan to address this.

Skilled working visas is generally how other countries handle it I guess.
