Been watching the replay on SS.

The ref let the rucks go which show that make for much more free flowing rugby.

Very small crowd, is this Covid restrictions?

New Zealand Rugby revamps NPC, scraps promotion-relegation system

New Zealand Rugby has scrapped the contentious promotion-relegation system and revealed a revamped national provincial competition.

Gone is the Premiership and Championship model, in place since 2011, replaced by a competition in which all 14 teams can win the top prize.

The new-look NPC will seed teams (odds and evens) into two conferences based on the previous season’s standings for round-robin matches and quarterfinals.

Each team will play the other six in their conference, and four crossover matches during the regular season, before the top four teams in each conference reach the quarterfinals.

Including the additional round of sudden-death games, it makes for 77 games over 12 weeks...

... The NPC will be played over 12 weeks from August 5, with the inclusion of a mid-week round for all teams. All competition matches carry full competition points and the full draw will be released in due course.

The Ranfurly Shield remains unchanged and is automatically contested when the holder of the shield plays at home in any round, excluding quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals.

2022 pools
ODDS: Waikato (1), Hawke’s Bay (3), Bay of Plenty (5), Wellington (7), Otago (9), Southland (11), Counties Manukau (13)
EVENS: Tasman (2), Canterbury (4), Auckland (6), Taranaki (8), Manawatū (10), North Harbour (12), Northland (14)

Sadly they don't play each other once. The two section competitions is kak. All the teams want to beat Cunterbury.

Each team plays the other teams in their pool, and four of the seven teams in the other pool. And every team has a fair crack at winning the title. It's not perfect, but it's a big improvement on the two division model imho.

Is 13 games definitely too many then? As opposed to 10 games they will play now in the round robin. Just feels like the problem Super Rugby got itself into with not playing everyone so skewing the balance somewhat.
