HWM were the "best selling" band in my old indie record shop. Punk kids went gaga for em. No Idea wholesale were top shit to deal with

Friends are warmer than gold when you're old
And keeping them is harder than you might suppose
Lately, I tend to make strangers wherever I go
Some of them were once people I was happy to know
Mounting mileage on the dash
Double darkness falling fast
I keep stressing, pressing on
Way deep down at some substratum
Feels like something really wrong has happened
And I confess I'm barely hanging on
All my happiness is gone
All my happiness is gone
It's all gone somewhere beyond
All my happiness is gone
Ten thousand afternoons ago
All my happiness just overflowed
That was life at first and goal to go
Me and you and us and them
And all those people way back when
All our hardships were just yardsticks then, you know
You know
It's not the purple hills
It's not the silver lakes
It's not the snowcloud shadowed interstates
It's not the icy bike chain rain of Portland, Oregon
Where nothing's wrong and no one's asking
But the fear's so strong it leaves you gasping
No way to last out here like this for long
'Cause everywhere I go, I know
Everywhere I go, I know
All my happiness is gone
All my happiness is gone

Moments can be monuments to you
If your life is interesting and true
It's just the same for a man or a girl
The meaning of the world lies outside the world
People love people and they understand
If you want to renovate your background mind
A federal woman needs municipal man
People gotta synchronize to animal time
You can't change the feeling
But you can change your feeling about the feelings in a second or two, uh huh
People always come around
I'm studying the ceiling on a little afternoon
And when I paint my dining room, uh huh
People gonna come around
I love to see a rainbow from a garden hose
Lit up like the blood of a centerfold
I love the city and the city rain
Suburban kids with biblical names
People ask people to watch their scotch
People send people up to the Moon
When they return, well there isn't much
People be careful not to crest too soon
The drums march along at the clip of an I.V. drip
Like sparks from a muffler dragged down the strip, uh huh
I really hope you'll come around
It's sunny and 75
It feels so good to be alive
Come on baby don't stay inside
Everybody's coming out tonight
If your life is interesting and true

Yeah, was a big At the Drive in fan at the time Sock.
Managed to see them, and you will know us by the trail of dead, Queens of the Stone Age and Deftones in quick succession on the Saturday at Reading 2000. Some cracking bands on that year

Nice. I still jam Deftones pretty regularly, from early material to contemporary.
That poster reinforces how rock focused Reading used to be. I remember one year The Dillinger Escape Plan were somehow on the main stage and generated a lot of headlines because the frontman shat on it as part of a somewhat creative insult to Puddle of Mudd who were following them at some point in the day... Most people I knew were completely perplexed by their presence, as a mathcore band they were not an easy listen even when compared to the likes of Slipknot who became festival regulars by dint of their popularity and TDEP certainly lacked that level of fan support.

The Chariot were a scuzzy, chaotic mess of a mathcore band. Absolutely fucking brilliant. This is their erstwhile frontman's attempt at a more conventional rock band:
Has an element of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion to it.

I was reading through this line up and thinking how good it was, and it took me too long to realise I was actually there!
Oh to be 20ish again!
Don't worry. I've been drinking.

Ha, I was 18. Was definitely a seminal weekend of my youth.
Did Reading (from 99) or Leeds (from 2003) every year until 06. Some decent times, were had, but this was the peak.

Was that the year the riot police came? I've no idea what they're like now but back then the Reading/Leeds festivals were pretty hardcore. Just bands and drinking.
I went to Glasto more often and kinda stopped as the BBC crowd started going, I think 2010 was the latest one I went to.

The rioting was at Leeds. Think it was the year before I first went though
Did Glastonbury once in 2005, which was one of the years with really bad flooding. As a result it was a bit shit. Too many people, too hard to get to, ankle deep mud everywhere and too many hippies.

Maybe, yea I think it's coming back to me now I remember some bright spark realising that if you set the portaloos on fire they evenrually explode. Cue a bunch of copy cat loos exploding over the venue!
Aye, hippies are a hazard at Glasto I'm afraid. I had a rather rosey picture of it from my first time in '95 when all the Britpop and New Wave of New Wave bands played, so I carried on long after it was worth going.

It is a great record. The band completely passed my by at the time. First heard them several years later when a friend was playing it in his car.

Opening track is a straight up banger, and just does not let up at all throughout the recordMargin__Walker wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 7:04 am It is a great record. The band completely passed my by at the time. First heard them several years later when a friend was playing it in his car.

Phil Elverum has revived his Microphones moniker and released this. He's gone a bit Sleep and released a 45 minute song. Worth a look for anyone into his stuff.

I was at that Reading Festival too.
What a year that was.
I also went to the Roskilde Festival in 2000. That was an incredible, but sobering experience.
Punk (just good rock?) band featuring members of Strung Out, Pulley, No Use For A Name, Face to Face, and The Tank.
Both albums are great. They haven't done anything in a few years, but I hope they do at least one more! That reminds me of when I first 'discovered' them. I think it was a live youtube clip where one comment (I'd like to believe it true) said: "That's my dad!" Sheesh, yeah, all the people from bands I listened to as a teen are old as fudge now! I'M old as fudge ... still loving this stuff!
This current pop punk band has a few bangers and, unlike many of them, don't look or sound like an 'edgy' boy band!

Loved that - pity about the 5 youtube ads that broke the song into bits thoughMargin__Walker wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 7:53 pm Phil Elverum has revived his Microphones moniker and released this. He's gone a bit Sleep and released a 45 minute song. Worth a look for anyone into his stuff.

Yeah, I thought it was great. The video was phenomenal. Poor guy has been through a lot in the last 4 years - the personal mementos of his life look like a life well lived thoughMargin__Walker wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 5:57 amYeah, I thought it was great. That project passed me by. Used to listen to all of those bands other than The Tank. Strung out were stand outs for me (before they went a bit metal anyway)

I love FYS
Trash Boat are another pop-punk band on the rougher end of the scale with some crackers
That track features Dan Campbell of The Wonder Years who would also fall under that category, though they've recently started to change their sound to more of an alt-rock/post-hardcore one.
