West Auckland. Posh bastard. Down south it was definitely more fush than fesh. It’s probably the influence of being closer to Straya than us.

I mean if we shaved all the hobbits, they'd clearly be white skinned underneath, & the elves are clearly all white. The only exception to this sea of whiteness, is the Orcs; because if we have, "White Orcs", then there must reasonably be other skin tones for Orcs !
Personally I care way more about the consistency of the character, with the original written one, rather than any racial, or other characteristic. It drove me nuts when in the film version of Tinker, Tailor, when they made the Peter Guillam character gay; not because I'm offended by LGBT characters; because the book had a bunch of them; & there's an implied homosexual relationship between two of the main characters; but rather because this character was explicitly hetrosexual, & used that as a way of getting intelligence.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/h ... 10904.htmlA foundation set up in the name of Captain Sir Tom Moore paid tens of thousands of pounds to companies run by the fundraiser’s daughter and her husband – one of which was registered only days before the charity was incorporated.
The Captain Tom Foundation, established in 2020 after the former army officer gained national attention with his pandemic fundraising efforts, received more than £1m in donations in its first year.
Accounts for the charity published in recent days reveal that £54,039 has been paid to two companies run by Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, and her husband, Colin. They also show that more money was spent on management costs than was given to charities.
The Independent can also reveal that the Charity Commission watchdog has a live regulatory compliance case – used to look into whether charities are acting in line with legal requirements – on the foundation.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u ... 320.htmlNow The Independent has been told that part of the watchdog’s case related to a request from the foundation to appoint Hannah Ingram-Moore as its CEO on a salary worth about a tenth of its total first-year income.
It is understood that the charity – established in May 2020 after the former army officer raised £39m for NHS charities – wanted to pay her in the region of £150,000 for the role. The figure represents 13.68 per cent of the charity’s total first-year income.
It is understood that the proposal to hand her the role was made by trustees without a recruitment campaign or competition.
A double Mankad in a game of cricket. Good onya mate - stop those cheating bloody batsmen

A grade cricket game in Australia has attracted attention after the winning side claimed two wickets – including the one to clinch the match – using the ‘Mankad’ mode of dismissal.
The second-grade game between Casey South Melbourne and Kingston Hawthorn ended as Kingston Hawthorn bowler Sen Sathyajith removed the bails of non-striker Sachin Halangode with the batter outside his crease. This was Sathyajith’s second such dismissal of the innings.
Hawthorn won the game by 13 runs with the two ‘Mankads’ both taking place late in the run chase – they were the eighth and tenth wickets to fall. The final wicket fell with Casey South Melbourne requiring 14 runs to win with one wicket and four overs in hand.
According to Law 41.16: “If the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out. In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out Run out if he/she is out of his/her ground when his/her wicket is put down by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered.”
In 2019, after Jos Buttler was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin in similar fashion in an IPL game, the MCC released a statement reiterating the importance of the law. They said: “”Without the law, non-strikers could back up at liberty, several yards down the pitch,” the statement added.
“It has never been in the laws that a warning should be given to the non-striker. Nor is it against the spirit of cricket to run out a non-striker who is seeking to gain an advantage by leaving his/her ground early.”
A former Australian first-class cricketer Adam Crosthwaite was critical of the dismissal on Twitter. “This is horrible,” he tweeted. “Cannot believe the people in this post praising the bowler. Are you kidding?”
You can watch the final dismissal below (the score shown in the video is incorrect):

Still think they just need to call short run if the nonstriker is backing up too far - appreciate tricky to do in club cricket (it's hard enough to watch for overstepping) but easy enough with any TV umps.
The problem with mankadding is that the bowler essentially drops out of their stride and waits for the non-striker to leave their ground, as the non-striker is timing with the tempo of the delivery, which seems a bit off to me. I'd rather dead ball if the bowler stops in their delivery stride and short run if the non-striker has left the crease before the ball is released.
Anyway, here's something to warm the cockles:

“Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.”
Dramatist John Dennis put on a play in 1709 called Appius and Virginia. It wasn't successful and closed after a short run, but he had devised an ingenious method to replicate thunder for the theatre.
Later Dennis was in the audience for a performance of Macbeth,
They "stole his thunder", and that is where we get the phrase from.
Later Dennis was in the audience for a performance of Macbeth,
Mr. Dennis happened once to go to the play, when a tragedy was acted, in which the machinery of thunder was introduced, a new artificial method of producing which he had formerly communicated to the managers. Incensed by this circumstance, he cried out in a transport of resentment, 'That is my thunder, by God; the villains will play my thunder, but not my plays.'

Re the cricket one, when did this awful high pitched screaming/laughing celebration come in? The Aussies have perfected it but it's across all sports now, you could hear it loads during Covid no crowds. Just makes my blood boil every time, cunts.

It doesn't seem very sporting, just like the noises you describe there, in fact.
In rugby terms it's like the celebrations for winning a scrum penalty, ffs.
I hold my nose and move on, tbh.

Wasn't that more a case of rolling in a couple of minor characters into Guillam's? He has a minor role in the film and him being gay is only brought up as something that could be used against him, beyond that it doesn't form any major part of his character. He doesn't really do much of anything. It's not like making, say, Ricki Tarr gay.fishfoodie wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 9:33 pmDon't you know that all mythical characters are clearly white ?ASMO wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 2:12 pmIt wasn't a criticism, it just went from a fairly innocuous conversation on to a full blown conversation about racial diversity of a bunch of fictional fantasy characters that are not human?mat the expat wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 10:53 am

I subscribe to Gutenberg.org to see what's what in books that have expired copyrights, mostly for the interesting art found in old adventure books, and some military journals. Today's list of new additions had a marriage guide from 1946 ... well, I never!!!
I only skimmed through some sections, but ... wow ... so this is what my grandparents grew up with (explains some things, I suppose).
Positive shock: jerking it is perfectly natural, and what Billy's dad says about him going insane is completely false. Among the many negative shocks: While we used to think homosexuals were just born that way, 'science' now tells us that it's completely conditioned and can be remedied.

As a former hooker, I concur on scrum penalties: the Ref has no fucking idea what is going on in scrums and the awarding of scrum penalties is mostly pretty arbitrary.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 8:59 am

I have no sympathy with batsmen who are dismissed via mankadding: as far as I'm concerned, the non striker sneaking a yard is cheating, and I see no reason why he should be warned or given the slightest benefit.

As if there's not enough shit in the world right now I just logged into Netflix to find A Madea Homecoming on the front page. This seems to be a crossover between Tyler Perry's godawful Madea franchise and Mrs. Brown's boys.
