The idea is more that it would be "a bridge" to the next Cup.

Compared to what happened in San Diego 1988? It feels like a progressive Kiwi-style innovation that could escalate the America's Cup brand... and make NZ more money...

Hosting the cup is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy and post Covid would show off the safest country in the world, New Zealand. Massive marketing boost for us. I fail to see why it is up to the NZ taxpayer to boost Britain's tarnished image.Grandpa wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 9:07 pmIf they could make it legally binding... it's quite appealing...Ymx wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 9:04 pmFrom what I understand about the cup rules, that would not be legally binding.Grandpa wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 9:00 pm In many ways it's a win-win for NZ... as The America's Cup would still be held in Auckland in 2024 regardless of the result in Cowes next year...

If Radcliffe wants the cup he can come and get it. If it's about showing off the AC75s they can do one of their world series regattas on The Solent without the mug on the line. That is win-win.
I like this idea best. Every 4 years have an open event with a capped financial element (to attract more competitors), but in-between, if you pass the financial threshold, you can compete for the Cup in the Defender's backyard...Ymx wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 10:11 pm I think we should entertain the idea of a team being able to pay the ranfurly holder to play a mid week game at the challengers home ground.
I see an issue if, one year out from the main event, a challenger wins it and the host country loses the right to defend at home.Grandpa wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 7:58 amI like this idea best. I drink and I forget things.
They don't have to accept the challenge... but the money might make it tempting...Enzedder wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 7:16 pmI see an issue if, one year out from the main event, a challenger wins it and the host country loses the right to defend at home.Grandpa wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 7:58 amI like this idea best. On the topic of the Cup itself... do we want a money cap to attract more entrants.. or do we want to leave it as is... so that innovation and even more spectacular boats are the theme? Those A75s were pretty impressive...
There’s talk of just having one boat/hull allowed. (Two in the whole tournament if Ineos get their way)
Now, it’s being touted as a cost reduction measure, to get more challengers. However, presumably it means new guys only have one hull. Whereas the existing teams will be on their 3rd (4th if you count the mini boats).
So it does not strike me as appealing for a new entrant.

At the moment it fees a little like a closed shop... I guess if the profile got bigger it will attract more millionaires... and become even more corporate... At least at the moment most competitors have been sailing nations. Guess it's finding the right balance.Ymx wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 10:45 pm There’s talk of just having one boat/hull allowed. The new entrants can buy (comparatively cheaply) one of the last generation hulls and drawings from previous entrants. Thus they get a good start on the design and a boat to train on. Of course each cycle it changes a bit but that would be a good start. At least that's the 'carrot'. I'd like to see it like it was back in, say, Freemantle. About 8 challengers and 2 or 3 defenders - and only one of them sunk.Ymx wrote: Thu Mar 25, 2021 10:45 pm There’s talk of just having one boat/hull allowed. You couldn't have 'out of schedule' challenges. It runs on 3 or 4 year cycles and everything is geared to having your boat ready 10-12 months out. Some sneaky cunt waits in the wings for 7 years getting their boat tuned and throws out a challenge for a year early. Na, not realistic.
Oh fuck. I saw late March and wondered how I had missed seeing those the other day. Never looked at the bloody year.
Oh well, information you now know twice I'm sure.

The 37th cup will be in Barcelona

An ode for .. Emir Dalton
The Cruel Sea
The Imperial Delegation marches up the gangway
to the bridge of the pirate raider.
"Lo," proclaims their haughty leader,
"I am the Official Emissary of the Red Empress,
Queen of Kindness, Mandater Extraordinaire,
betrothed of Mysterious Count Gayfforde,
happy house DJ with the most Phat Beatz,
and High Maven of the Known Cosmos.
And who be you, my fellow?"
The fellow replies,
"I be Emir Dalton, captain of this ship."
The emissaries collapse as one
onto the deck, and prostrate themselves,
and grovel most obsequiously.
"O Great One,"proffers the Head Toady,
"will you accept this small token
of our most sincere appreciation?"
A troupe of shaved Nubians step forward
with a vast chest of golden groats,
that spill and twinkle on the deck.
Emir Dalton sighs, and looks away
in embarrassment at this meagre harvest.
The Head Toady starts to sweat.
"Can we offer you the Keys
to the Kingdom in the North?", he quavers.
"More!" shouts the Head Toady to his retainers.
"Bring tribute! Bring sacrifices! More!"
Another group of navvies hasten up
carrying worn teddy bears and Weetbix
snatched from the tables of South Auckland.
Emir Dalton sighs again.
"I understand the Empress has other priorities,"
he says, finally; and orders the emissaries
to be thrown into the harbour.
Then the Good Ship Emirates Imperial Tobacco
Fonterra McDonalds ANZ Meta Google Tesla
Newstalk ZB Bitcoin Z Energy New Zealand
unfurls its sails and heads out into the Gulf,
with its proud figurehead Lady Kate of Hawkesby
pointing the way to Barcelona;
and in the wake of the pirate ship,
a small red sock swirls unnoticed,
down into the cold deep blue.

I believe that it is in the deed of gift. Anyone can actually challenge at any time as long as they abide by the governing measurement rules at the time.
Got a few mill floating around Enz? Been practicing your tacks and gibes on Hamilton Lake (or is it Lake Tron).

Ah, lol. Apols Guy, know you were in the area for some time. I'll find some of that humble pie and take a nibble.Ymx wrote: Tue Apr 05, 2022 6:00 pm You posted “Freemantle” further up. Guy saying those living in Fremantle might be pissed “at yours (spelling)”

It's a common mistake, no worries. I just liked the irony of your error followed by you pointing out another. Small things.Snooze wrote: Tue Apr 05, 2022 8:06 pmAh, lol. I lived there for 28 years and actually had my Australian citizenship ceremony there, in the Town Hall... back in 92. Well before the current hoopla surrounding the event, I was sworn in by the Mayor and serenaded with a collection of Australian folk songs sung by Kiwi folk singer, John Hore... complete with massive Kiwi sticker on his guitar case clearly visible to everyone assembled. You have to love irony.
That is ironic, as was my error. And John Hore huh. Pretty cool.Guy Smiley wrote: Wed Apr 06, 2022 12:09 amIt's a common mistake, no worries. I've been somewhat involved, and following the AC since the first challenge in what, about '86/87? For me Fremantle was the best regatta and nearly the last of the multi-home defense events. I wish we could get it back to that but a) NZ sure as shit doesn't have the funds, and b) they need to bring the boats back to being, well, boats.
I do love the tech though, and when you think back to how far they've come from the lumbering 12m tanks. 50 knots FFS.

Yeah, the tech is amazing. Team NZ unveiled their chase boat today… I didn’t know they’ve stipulated all team chase boats must be powered by hydrogen in an effort to promote clean tech…

Been developing that over the last 18 months. It's also big in development around North America too, trying to get foiling power boats commercialised, as I think they are wanting to reduce foreshore damage on the big lakes around here. I have a rich mate interested (just to be first on the lake), but he likes his wake surfing too much I think. Not necessarily hydrogen (alternative) powered but it's a two-part win if you ask me.Guy Smiley wrote: Thu Apr 07, 2022 1:08 pm Yeah, the tech is amazing.
