North Koreans are getting rid of their pets. I think I would.

What are the resource availability parameters of your question?

I you were starving in a famine zone, and eating some vicious wild dog that would be happy to eat you, was on offer - then yes.

Given choices - no, not part of my culture.

Indians think the same thing about you eating cows.

My own? No fucking way.

But I reckon I could definitely put away a well done beagle.

It is OK but nothing to write home about. Somewhere between lamb and beef.

I find it strange to think it is morally OK to eat some species but not others

True. I'd try it but not sure it would be my meat of choice.

I'd eat anything that came within grabbing distance if my life depended on it.

Thinking about it, I'd rate the taste of dogs in terms of how annoying they are. For example, I'd enjoy chihuahua as a snack, the annoying bitey little shits. Not sure I'd enjoy gnawing on some labrador though. Eating rottweiler would make me feel like an apex predator so there'd be some comfort in that.

It feels a bit weird when you’re in a market, say in rural Vietnam and the carcasses are all laid out, fresh off the spit roast with their doggy faces on and canine teeth in etc.
Not sure it it’s even because they’re dogs - just maybe we’re not wired to eat carnivore (anymore?)?

There are very few traits of the French which I will grudgingly concede as being admirable, the vim and vigour with which they will go about carving up a horse is certainly one of them.

Dogs? Hmmmm... I don't know. I laugh at the missus when she says she won't eat lambs because of their little faces, but when I think of eating dogs I know what she means.

Can anyone account for the taste?

I've had beef, pork, venison, bison, moose, kangaroo, lamb/mutton, chicken, turkey, pheasant, goose, duck, sea turtle.

I like just a bit of salt and pepper on my meat. But would have a go if it's not great and has a good marinade or spice rub!

Not all species have the same emotional intelligence, awareness, and social conditioning that dogs have. In fact I'm struggling to think of another animal that does. Cats are plums.

Cultural food preferences are odd. I have absolutely zero positive feelings towards dogs as pets yet (in fact I'd go as far as saying I hate the things),but I wouldn't be able to eat one unless I was really at the point of desperation.

They are indeed odd and there is very little logic involved as far as I can tell. I remember the first time I ate goat; it felt a little adventurous but it became a regular choice for me ever since. And horse - I ordered by mistake but it worked okay. I don’t order it by choice but that’s only because I don’t eat meat very often and there are other things I prefer.

And to put my cards on the table, I became vegetarian 30 years ago after getting my first dog due to this particular moral dilemma . I Have two Cocker Spaniels at the moment (they are NOT vegetarian).

When I was in Thailand I was sitting down to yet another delicious, spicy, Thai meal when a cat came mooching around amongst us. A fellow traveller picked it up and held it's back leg to demonstrate that it's hind leg looked just like a chicken drumstick. i.e. implying that the chicken dish I was eating was potentially stir fried cat. My reply was "Well if it is I don't care because all I know is that this is fucking delicious!"

(I don't for a minute think it was)

Dog got a personality so I won't eat with something that you almost can interract with.

I was hoping to try dog in Cambodia (along with tarantula), but unfortunately circumstances prevented me from getting a chance. So yeah, I would have no problem eating dog.

Cat gives me more pause - not because I like them any more as creatures (they are perhaps my least favourite animal) - but because they are supposed to be very game-y flavoured and often served stewed with small bones intact - both culinary dislikes of mine.

I have no moral reservations about dogs and cats as food because they are 'companion' animals - I much prefer chickens and ducks as pets and will happily eat those (including ones I have raised myself).

Ja but they wont come running wagging their tails every time you come home from work though.

Apparently donkeys are so clever they can play practical jokes on their masters. I heard a story where this man and his donkey travelled the length of the country for some charity cause. They slept in the veld overnight. The man had a bit of routine in the mornings when he woke up. First thing he would do is grab his water bottle and have a drink. One morning his water bottle was gone. He noticed the donkey just stare at him the whole time. He later found his water bottle hidden behind the only prominent bush about 50 metres away.
