Niegs wrote: Thu May 19, 2022 7:16 pm Saved the Paarl Gim v Paul Roos until I had some time. I was impressed by the SA schools in their skill, not just relying on size when they hosted that tourney vs foreign schools pre Covid (whupping them in most cases).

Watched two big Kiwi schools recently and it was just boshing for 75 mins.

Questions … do these big SA schools require tuition fees? Either way, are they recruiting many kids from smaller schools or would they be mostly ‘home grown’ from the lower school(s)?
Most of the big rugby schools are fee paying state schools. These are run by a governing body of parents, educators and learners. They are able to supplement school funding by levying fees. Schools like Paul Roos, Grey College and others have considerable infrastructure. And yes the big rugby schools openly offer bursaries to talented kids from everywhere. There is a bit of skullduggery and poaching but most of these schools talent comes from their catchment.

Siya Kolisi for instance was a bursary boy at Grey High in Port Elizabeth. Cheslin Kolbe went to a state school that woudn't be considered a rugby powerhouse - Brackenfell. Makazole Mapimpi went to a state school where fees are not charged - ie free.
Cheers! And what would the fees be? Boarding obviously factors in, but ‘fee paying state’ is not something we have here. Either full independent or public. But I worked in a Catholic school in Oz that required just a fee of less than half the 10-20k that’s often the norm here.

Edit… I see about 40k Rand. That’s not too bad considering independent schools I worked for here in Canada charge 15-25k / year.
The traditional powerhouse rugby and cricket schools are very well supported with endowments and sponsorships from the old boys and the local community. I live next to Wynberg Boys which is a big cricket school. They have huge financial input from the Old Boys. There are lots of ex-Springboks making a good living coaching in the elite school system. Both rugby and cricket.

Anton Rupert is a Paul Roser and probably the biggest investor in sport in South Africa. Think he own Saracens aswell. Have shares in Bulls.

Late Jan Bull Pichardt was a Gimmie. He invest a lot of money into Paarl Gim.

Nowadays both schools play host for Willie le Roux, Juan de Villiers and Pierre Schoeman tournaments. Obviously the Boks invest back in their roots. Wilde Klawers founder is an x Gim headmaster , late Reinhardt.

Millies 14 a beat Settlers a. 3 to 2. Great result for Millies. Building nicely. In under 14 there is still a lot of coaching required so once the team starts building on wins it gets better.

Chuffed for Wynberg with their win over Bishops. Follows on from their excellent win over Boland Landbou last week. I know the Wynberg coaches well and they deserve this richly.

Which is why the Zulu farm boys are the future of South African rugby. Big strong guys from the rural areas of KZN. The Sharks have a massive flood relief program going. My family in East Griqualand have sent truckloads of potatoes, carrots and cabbages. South Africa absolutely has the means to feed our whole population and export a shit ton of food. We're putting in an extra 100ha of yellow and white mielies at the end of the year. Everyone I know from the Swartland to the Free State to the Tugela in KZN are planning on expanded planting this year.
Edit: In anticipation of the shortages expected from the Ukraine/Russia crisis. Fert and Diesel prices are up.

Three interesting games on the schoolboy circuit are being shown on the SuperSport Schools Youtube channel. The game is doing very well in many of our schools. Currently there is a 7th XV game being televised between Paarl Boys and Bishops. 7 teams per age group is pretty impressive. IIRC the bigger all boys schools in KZN went down to 8ths and 9ths in my day. Please leave a like on the videos. Every little bit of support helps to grow the game at grassroots level.

Grey College vs Monument
MARITZBURG COLLEGE 1ST XV VS HILTON COLLEGE
Paarl Boys vs Bishops
St Andrews vs Grey High

Ons by Skolerugby SA keur wat by Hoërskool Danielskuil gebeur het, ten sterkste af.

My boy is devastated. Beginning of the year he that fence fell on his foot and he missed the most of the cricket season. Today he was going to keep for the A and B team hockey and yesterday whilst playing soccer at lunch at school one of the kids blasted the ball ( netball ball ) at him and sprained his wrist. He tried to practice before the first match wearing a wrist guard and one of the kids hit a hard shot at him in the air and damaged his wrist further. Maybe 3 weeks out again....
He is in tears. So disappointed
