Oh well.......

You can't write England off at home. Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Pope.......they just have class throughout the team (and of course being in form helps).

Disappointed for NZ - difficult to chop and change the team due to illness - and losing 2 bowlers in 2 games is hard to deal with - BUT - top order has to do better when you carry a lead into the 3rd innings. We should have got to lunch today and at least been in a position to declare.

But you can see Baz's influence already. Genuinely think that 2021 England would have played for the draw once they were 50 odd for 3. I guess when you have the personal that can flay a tired attack you have to let it loose.

But worried about NZ. Our top order hasn't looked this shaky for a few seasons. No Watling or Taylor - Kane seemingly out of form for a while now and openers struggling. We would have been scuppered in this test if it wasn't for Mitchell and Blundell.

Pretty gutted.

Wow. Test cricket is the absolute best.

Amazing what happens when we’re not run by clowns

Should also say fair play to Trent Bridge. There were a lot of kids in that crowd who maybe have been down to their local club who fell in love with the sport today and plenty of others who were reminded of why they already do. That finish deserved a full house

What a fabulous test match! Great to hear the Barmy Army in full voice. Loved Nasser and Athers in commentary. YJB with a Gilchrist like innings. And fearless Stokes. A classic.

Great afternoons entertainment. This type of approach will help get people invested in test matches. Free entry was also a good move.

Well done to YJB, I'm a critic of his but well played.

England are still missing some pieces (3 injured quicks that any one of would make a difference, find a spinner and an opener) but with this approach they'll win more than they have.

Not sure how the BBC are going to cram that lot into a 55 minute highlights programme in 85 minutes time

Chatting with my brother on the weekend and we agreed that we both want to see Bazza succeed because he has such a keen cricket intellect, but neither of us wanted to see him succeed so quickly and against the BCs.

Well done, England, indeed

Please go ahead and bookmark. Our bowling attack is in a different league than NZ, especially with Boult so out of form and spent from IPL. Cannot believe they did not pick Wagner again

England have will do well to keep Broad and Anderson fit and firing throughout the next test against NZ and into the 9 matches against the Proteas. I reckon they'll rest both for the dead rubber 3rd test coming up. Their batters all seem to be coming into form though.

Advantage England slightly if Broad and Anderson stay fit. South Africa have the better all round bowling outfit though. England are a stronger batting unit.

We don't have the match winners like Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Morgan.

Stokes on his own is a match winner, proven against the Proteas in all formats

England were one loose shot from losing yesterday because of how weak the top order is. Its a massive frailty and will bite them in the ass again, particularly against a bowling attack with more variety (and a complete set of bowlers) on less friendly wickets.

The top order being vulnerable along with an extended tail means they're onky ever a couple of mistakes from a shitshow. Bairstow might prosper under the Stokes McCullum leadership in ways he hasn't previously, that's still to be seen. Astonishing yesterday but if he tries that at Headingley he'll be gone quickly.

They've got the impetus of a new leadership team atm. But it currently puts huge pressure on Root and Stokes to perform pretty much every time.

One caveat about the top order is whether Lees is a genuine international opener. Has potential but we've seen a lot come and go who did and he'll have a more severe test against SA. Also he's 29 with only a few tests behind him so there's likely some weakness in there that better / different bowlers will exploit.

So is Kane Williamson. So is Trent Boult.

One match winner doesn't mean you're going to win.

Hmm - Headingley is flat and small. Bairstow is a complex character and I get a sense that men like Stokes and McCullum will get far more out of him than Root and Silverwood.
This England side still has massive frailties and won't suddenly be world beaters, but a more aggressive gameplan certainly seems to suit us. Now to bowl with a bit more brain at tailenders...

I am so fed up of the short pitch bowling to tailenders strategy. If they were good at playing the swinging/seaming ball on a full 4th stump line they wouldn't be batting at 9 or lower.

The "put 3 men back and bang it in at them for 45 minutes" thing seems horribly unimaginative when it's against the top order as well - real desperation stuff.

Yes our batting is still a little sus. But we beat India 2/1 in the 2021/22 tour and beat drew with NZ in the recent 2 match series in NZ. Those are two of the top 3 ranked teams.

But we had newbies with impressive contributions in Petersen, Erwee and Verreyne. Elgar, Bavuma and QDK are a decent spine. Rassie is a good test alternate imo and if Markram has ironed out his technical problems I think we have the guns to do it. Root is on a different level to any of our guys though.

Yes and it cost us the game against India at Lord's last year. It's just dumb 'alpha' cricket that could well have cost us yesterday as well.
