I suspect Octopus will want a bit more soon.

For me this means nothing as I have no mortgage but for most working people with no margins to work with this means a shit load of hurt.
I really don't think that many people appreciate what this will mean for society as a whole.

Only a matter of time that a wind fall tax will be done if there is any sense.

Another rise in October is going to be brutal, energy/utility Privatisation and the subsequent siphoning off of profits for our shit services being handed to cash machines off shores is a Tory disagrace
Yeah a windfall tax is inevitable but there's not too much they can do otherwise. Can't borrow too much as interest rates rise and rise they will as energy and food prices rise as much as 100% in the coming months.

I think the world is in line for severe changes. QE'd our way out of the banking crisis and the bill is coming due. Batten down the hatches.
I think my plans for early retirement in a couple of years are well and truly scuppered.
I will proably now retire in about 7 years

German retailers have announced from tomorrow food prices are going up between 20-50%. Not long before that's the case here too.

The price of many cheap staples like rice and pasta have risen by that already

Everything made using electricity - in other words...everything...is going to go up in price as the makers pass on their increase in energy costs to consumers. It's a perfect shitstorm and no mistake.

Even things like sunflower oil are running low as we depend on Ukraine and Russia for much of the supply, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60941091

Time to panic buy crisps!

Add to that: any goods that are transported are going up due to petrol/diesel prices.

But it's fine: Rishi will consider additional measures to help people by 2024.

I would think Europe could scrape by with a couple of years of austerity. Maybe do something about food wastage and the addiction to driving around in cars pointlessly. What about no holidays abroad for a few years? Plenty of belt tightening the first world can do.

Europe produces about 17 million tons of rapeseed per annum for the biofuel industry. That's about 7 million tons of edible oil after processing. Enough to fry more chips than the whole world could eat in a year.

They want half the country poor and desperate. I have no doubt this is deliberate. Poverty, terrorising poor people, has been their go to, social engineering tool for 12 years.
You go to a private, public school, your parents pay 60 grand a year, so of course you want people who didn't to suffer. Of course you want your "education" to count. To make you feel all special, for your entire pompous, untalented, born on third base life.
Making everyone else poor as dirt, where you get to pity them will ensure that.

4% of the population have been trained, since an early age to be laughing, cruel, hateful sociopaths.
I blame f'king Hugh Grant for humanising them.
Without Hugh, the would be no David Cameron, Nick Clegg, Boris..we fucking hated the posh before Hugh. They all had to change their accents.
Giving them power over poor people is just spectacularly misguided.
They will insrantly go into pulling wings off a daddy Longlegs mode.
The last people on earth who should have the reigns of the country, have it.

If this stuff was contained in England, great..but it isn't. It affects everyone on these islands.

Just looked at getting some heating oil .... was 60p per litre at start of year and now 120p ...
So a staggering increase and makes the electricity price rices look very acceptable.

Fascinating from line6 HXFX. As the most important variable for who you vote for in the UK is age I have to ask why are the over 60's so keen on punishing families and children? They seem desperate to make the under40s in particular poor and desperate. When I look at the services cut over the last 10 years it has been services for families and children cut first and we have the highest tax burden in years not long after all these baby boomers and slightly younger have retired.

Even the French are struggling with electricity prices

France uses nearly double what the UK uses.

Current figures
France 64.1 GW and importing 7.8GW
UK 35.1 GW

And the French government is ploughing untold cash amounts of cash into EDF to protect customers from the ultimate rise. As Macron knows every euro more expensive bills get the closer to Le Pen (who is closing fast) voters get.

European governments aren't ready for the anger of energy and food bills. The wave of populism we're about to experience in the next year or two is going to be much worse than what we've seen before. Brace yourselves.

Also, Sunak again making a tit of himself: I guess he knows the people this scheme will help don't vote for him anyway.

Ageing nuclear plants. Much like the UK nuclear fleet. Outtages are normally staggered throughout the summer.

France are plugged into the European grid and can export electricity so will be impacted like the rest of us by gas prices. In the same way we aren't protected despite not getting our gas from Russia. We've exported a lot more gas this year.

I think Johnson is fine as Tories won't really fancy being PM during a cost of living crisis, likely recession/stagflation and the party scandal. Not a recipe for success.

?

Some classify baby boomers as those born between 1946 and 1964; others use 1946 and 1966 as the start-end points. The first group turn 58 this year and the second 56.

You reckon there aren't lots of either still in the workforce?

The boss of the UK's energy regulator has warned that the energy price cap is expected to rise to around £2,800 in October.

Jonathan Brearley told MPs that the price cap, which is currently at £1,971, will increase due to continued volatility in the gas market.

He said the price rises were a "once in a generation event not seen since the oil crisis in the 1970s".

The Ofgem chief executive apologised and pledged to "fix" the energy market.

I think after Panorama tonight the real shit is going to hit the fan. Then its going to be a constant tsunami of Tory filth and debauchery.
Then its going to be all out Tory warfare and unswerving condemnation after the Gray report.
Oh happy days

I am willing to bet that there will be an announcement of a windfall tax on the energy companies, this will give the fat controller some breathing space from the partygate pressure.

And if I were chief exec of one of the energy companies, I'd repay the compliment by offering to pay Boris' fine.

To avoid my bill going to £2800 later this year, Scot Energy are very generously offering me the opportunity to fix my tariff to Aug '23 at....£4,600.

What fucking drugs are they on?

A call from the gas company offering you a long term fixed tariff is pretty much a guarantee that prices are heading downwards. It always has been when I have been called in the past.

My standard variable kicks in next month.. at £297 per month or roughly £3,550 per year. So how does the £2,800 cap come into play?

Currently paying a fixed tariff of £155 per month which ends next week.

... so this supposed 2800 tarrif. Is this your spend with one provider or in total?
I have electricity contact but also have oil fired central heating and coal/wood burning stove.
Home oil price has doubled in 6 months as I bought some last week. Have not bought any coal as it is "summer time" but suspect that will be a lot higher too.

Time to invest in a decent chain saw and get some trees down I think.

By the end of this decade we will have a lot of surplus from wind on windy days. Going to need those electrolysers, batteries and long term hydrogen storage. Heating directly from electricity with heat pumps should undercut hydrogen by a lot.

I think I have mentioned this before but a friend is on a variable tariff which has, twice, paid him to charge his EV. As the amount of wind keeps ramping up this will happen more often. There has been about 6GW come online in the last couple of years and there's another 6GW due in the next 3 years.

I'm considering getting an air source heat pump and underfloor heating. If gas gets cheap again then it's marginal but it might be less susceptible to price fluctuations.

Electric car is next on my list. Boilers only 5years old and highly efficient. Hopefully, the price ratio between gas and electricity shifts and we don't end up subsidising gas. Pretty pissed off by the substantial increase in standing charges.
