Biden was indeed comfortably ahead in the polls before the riots, but the gap has narrowed substantially, especially in those states most affected. The latest polls give Trump a 2-point lead in Michigan and a tie in Minnesota. Before the riots Biden had an 8 point lead in Michigan and a double digit lead in Minnesota.

Of course the situation is far more complex than that, Texas has a Republican Governor but the cities are run by Democrats and have not experienced the levels of violence and crime as some other cities. Beyond the point of the riots occurring in Democrat cities a point that the conservative media have been hammering home is that those people rioting are democrat not republican voters. Whether true or not they've also been asking why the democrats have been so unwilling to condemn the rioting.

I think the protests and the rioting was something people would find tolerable in the short term but the longer it went on the more it looked like wanton destruction and anarchy rather than an attempt to express outrage at police brutality and demand change.

That's not a surprise. I presume they are including mental health in that sense the figures are probably low. Lot of untreated mental health problems in the states. That case is a difficult one as it is perfectly believable that a shit confluence of events has led to her death rather than the cop assassinating her.

When I hear that Trump is likely to win in November, I have to ask "why?".

From what I read, and from what you tell me, there is a groundswell of opinion that doesn't view Biden as "credible".

This does seem (to me, anyway) that the opinion is that Trump is a more "credible" POTUS.

I feel that if Trump gets re-elected, it will be because the perception is that Biden is just as bad and, rather than voting him out, the electorate will accept Trump and not vote for the man opposing him.

yup, and I guess this is notfatty's point in a way also - the Dems need to come out and say that they're in favour of people exercising their 1st amendment rights (emphasis the constitution part) of peaceful protest but that violent protest is unacceptable etc ; unfortunately I think this may be too nuanced for a lot of the swing voters

I think this is worth serious consideration.

Even if Trump has been happy to flout the checks and balances which would force a normal President to show some restraint, there has always been the potential pitfall of re-election for him to consider.

With that removed, assuming his re-election, it should take the brakes off (such as there are any) entirely.
