Yeah, totally. I like how Nick Cave explained it as being a spectacle not to miss (can't remember his exact words)... my sisters stayed up to watch it here in NZ while I gave it a miss. Everyone has their own take but what I don't really get is the apparent need to attack someone for going.BnM wrote: Sat May 06, 2023 10:43 pm At least they've achieved things and not just there by accident of birth

I read in the letters pages of one of the dailies that food banks have lost out on lottery funding because it had been diverted to coronation celebration projects.
My wife is a trustee of a small charity which helps people who are really quite desperate, they are the ones who have slipped through many nets. The charity is finding it very difficult to access funding at the moment as there are so many more applicants.

The lottery money still went to charities it was just charities related to the coronation which you wonder about. King Charles and his acolytes have tried to make Monday a national volunteering day to be fair but it's gone dreadfully and very very few people havs signed up. There's fewer volunteers now than ever in the UK because society has been completely ripped of community spirit. A number of factors go into that but increasing inequality and politicians turning everyone on themselves is mostly the reason.Tichtheid wrote: Sun May 07, 2023 8:07 am I read in the letters pages of one of the dailies that food banks have lost out on lottery funding because it had been diverted to coronation celebration projects.

I half watched it, it was really an odd spectacle. I don't think there's many coronations of that scale left. Especially as Christianity continues to fall in the UK there was too much God bothering ongoing. Oh well, Penny Mordaunt looked exceptional so there's that.

The point was really that the funding was pulled from food banks.
I live in what is often mocked as a middle class hippie area, Muesli Mountain it's called - it's less of a mountain and more of a hill but that fucks with the alliteration.
The local primary school now has a food bank and it's struggling.
Oh and on the subject of volunteering, be careful out there

I don’t know either way, but I find that pretty hard to believe to be honest. Certainly funding has been reduced massively across the board, lots of charities really strugglingTichtheid wrote: Sun May 07, 2023 8:07 am I read in the letters pages of one of the dailies that food banks have lost out on lottery funding because it had been diverted to coronation celebration projects.

If I may ask, why do you find it hard to believe?
The lottery community fund doesn't have up to date records, it only goes up to early last year.
There has been a huge rise in the number of food bank users, so even if funding stayed the same it would go a lot less far https://www.statista.com/statistics/382 ... ank-users/
However that wasn't the claim, the claim was that food banks haven't been awarded the funding they had previously, or perhaps it was new food banks that didn't achieve their application, there was just the anecdotal quote in the Guardian that the food bank had been unsuccessful in looking for lottery funding, and this person had been told the reason was these coronation projects.
Coronation-related funding is new, so even if a pound was awarded it is a pound that didn't go elsewhere. Googling UK fund-raising tells me
More than £3 million of National Lottery funding has been awarded to communities across the UK so they can come together in celebration for next month’s Coronation of King Charles III.
The National Lottery Community Fund has awarded grants to over 700 community organisations across the UK to date to help them mark the occasion, which is set to take place on Saturday 6 May. It is funding a range of activities through National Lottery Awards for All.
The grants range from £300 up to £10,000, and are to support activities across the Coronation weekend with an emphasis on events and activities that bring people together and have a positive and lasting impact on community engagement.
edit, incidentally, when the lottery rolled over to a maximum the other week no one won the jackpot of £11M, the next draw was for £2M.
A tidy little profit for Camelot.

They really are the best of us.
With the coronation, the funeral and the jubilee, plus the normal money to the royals, we’ve spent about £850million of taxpayers money on them in the last couple of years. But yeah, tourism, because nobody visits Versailles.
I think your over estimating the intelligence of the 2000 odd people still willing to go and hear Alex 'sleepy cuddles' Salmon and Lorna Slater screeching away

So Penny Mordaunt holds a sword whilst dressed like concept art for Whoopi Goldberg's character in Star Trek and she's now been deemed what was referred to in times gone by as a bit of all right and/or the obvious choice for the next leader of the Conservative Party?

If there'd been a tragic accident, where she slipped on Chlamydia's cloak, & lopped off the Bumblecunts head, she'd be a shoe-in for leader.Hal Jordan wrote: Sun May 07, 2023 10:06 pm So Penny Mordaunt holds a sword whilst dressed like concept art for Whoopi Goldberg's character in Star Trek and she's now been deemed what was referred to in times gone by as a bit of all right and/or the obvious choice for the next leader of the Conservative Party?

Well if you want an absolute confirmation that these arrests were Politically motivated, & legally dubious ....
He's dead right; sue for wrongful arrest, & put the new Nazi law to the test.
The Met set out from the Station intending to arrest all & sundry, & they didn't give a fuck if they had any grounds.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65527007The Metropolitan Police has expressed "regret" over the arrests of six anti-monarchy protesters on Coronation day.
Republic chief executive Graham Smith, who was among the group, said he has now received a personal apology from police officers.
He said he did not accept the apology and would take legal action after no charges were brought against him.
The Met also confirmed it had used a controversial new law to detain the group.

I agree - it would be a real test of the new legislation with the polis having to provide evidence that they suspected/knew they were going to cause an offence with intent to cause a disturbance. I suspect the chips inserted into their bodies when they had their covid vaccinations will provide the key scientific evidence! Apparently George Soros and Bill Gates will be key witnesses.fishfoodie wrote: Mon May 08, 2023 10:42 pm Well if you want an absolute confirmation that these arrests were Politically motivated, & legally dubious ....

Harry Stratton, 30, who is the group’s director, said he was with Graham Smith and nine other people when Mr Smith and five in the group were arrested at around 7am as they brought placards to the demonstration from nearby St Martin-in-the-Fields.
Mr Stratton told PA news agency: “They were carrying placards that were saying ‘not my King’ when around 20 police said ‘we are stopping you and we are searching you’.
“Graham and our volunteers asked why and they said ‘we will find that out’.
“After that they arrested them saying ‘we are seizing all these placards’ and Graham said ‘why are you arresting us?’”![]()
By that I mean get sued for wrongful arrest and get individually investigated for abuse of power and. Corruption in public office.
Well every fecking one knew it was a Draconian and possibly illegal detention.

Braverman's vibrator must be on its last legs what with the Coronation arrests, Just Stop Oil being carted off on a daily basis and the arrival of her prison hulk for refitting (I wonder which chum gets that contract).
I have stayed on that barge and many others like her. I have been on a lot worse.Hal Jordan wrote: Wed May 10, 2023 12:50 pm Braverman's vibrator must be on its last legs what with the Coronation arrests, Just Stop Oil being carted off on a daily basis and the arrival of her prison hulk for refitting (I wonder which chum gets that contract).

I'm sure it was fine, but the number of occupants is being more than doubled from its current status, and if the Home Office have anything to do with it, maintenence will be zero and the staff will be arseholes.shaggy wrote: Wed May 10, 2023 1:57 pmI have stayed on that barge and many others like her. The capacity on that barge will only be 500, the two new holding camps will not be ready until 2024! All going fine then?
Apart from the fact that the barge is built to accommodate up to 506 guests, is classed by Lloyds Register which will prevent it from lowering standards due to the MLC Code and to retain its insurance will need to be operated in accordance with the companies Safety Management System, I suppose the owner could make an absolute arse of it and destroy their reputation in providing floating accommodation to oil & gas companies, but I doubt it.Hal Jordan wrote: Wed May 10, 2023 4:20 pmI'm sure it was fine, but the number of occupants is being more than doubled from its current status, and if the Home Office have anything to do with it, maintenence will be zero and the staff will be arseholes.shaggy wrote: Wed May 10, 2023 1:57 pmI have stayed on that barge and many others like her. Clear messaging here - this is the hereditary line established for the next 50 years. Looks like they are not going anywhere soon!

Although I think he somewhat misjudged the backlash even from his friends.
I am a staunch Republican however it's not something I will really over
I would be contented if the fuckers just paid their taxes and became like the European Royals.
Happy if the monarchy was abolished but not a priority.
I just can’t imagine a credible scenario where that happens.
