See that, that gets right on my wick.
A chance to complain about stuff, stuff that perhaps isn't the biggest issue of the day, but is annoying nonetheless.
I am currently storing a whole load of items in what I laughingly call my office until I get proper workshop space sorted.
I just chucked my jumper over the back of my chair but unbeknownst to me I hooked one of the files sticking out of a drawer in the small desktop chest of drawers which is on a shelf over my left shoulder.
The small desktop, or shelf top, chest of drawers holds hundreds of tiny items, all guitar making stuff, like switches, screws, electronics, bone blanks for nuts and saddles, miniature saw blades, micro files for the nut slots etc etc.
All of it ended scattered across the floor just now when I turned in my chair and pulled the thing off the shelf, not one drawer remained in the casing and not one drawer had anything left in it, bar a couple of screws.
Bastard.

The only way I can survive stuff like that is to treat it as an opportunity to rationalise and reorganise.Tichtheid wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 1:02 pm A chance to complain about stuff, stuff that perhaps isn't the biggest issue of the day, but is annoying nonetheless.

My current source of irritation is my wife throwing all the stuff she's trying to hide from the kids into my study, so that I can barely see the floor, and one of the fucking things keeps playing the peppa pig theme tune at random intervals.
I'm informed that this 'storage' is temporary, but there's stuff that's been here for months. It's quite hard to teach (well, lecture) the kids on tidiness when my study looks like a someone's driven a herd of wildebeest through a toy shop.
The new wave of e-bike/e-scooter riders who follow their own rules. Wrong way on the bike path, dangerously fast on shared pathways, never using bells, riding on sidewalks, riding slow in the middle of vehicle traffic, no helmets. Not all, of course, but there seems to be a higher percentage of assholes in this city that asshole drivers and asshole cyclists.

People using power tools or otherwise making unnecessary noise at before 10am on Sundays.
Some people are shift workers with a limited window to do things, I get that, but the worst offenders near me are just early risers who don't seem to give a fuck about anyone else. I'm generally up no later than 9 at weekend anyway, so it's not like they're rousing me from my slumber, there's just something about Sunday mornings that feels like they should be genteel, quiet and relaxing if you're fortunate enough not to be at work.

Increasingly it's dog owners in general that get on my wick. So many just don't seem to have bothered training their animal or attempt to control them.bogbunny wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 1:56 pm Dogs on beaches where they are prohibited during the summer season, but it's my baby Tiddles.
No enforcement whatsoever. Young families playing on the beach.
I do like dogs, but I don't like constantly being rushed up to by strange ones, whose temperament I don't know, because no one keeps them on a bloody leash or has trained them for recall. Imagine it must be a nightmare for those with allergies.

It probably doesn't help that the UK seems to have the same kind of cultural blindspot towards dogs killing people, that the US does to mass shootings.sockwithaticket wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:29 pmIncreasingly it's dog owners in general that get on my wick. Jeez, I didn't realise it had gotten that bad. I suspect part of it is a lot of people who didn't go anywhere near the countryside pre-covid lockdowns have started to and they don't have much consideration for nature beyond it being open space they can let their precious pooch run around in. Bring back dog licensing and start phasing out the problematic breeds (I'm not in favour of destroying existign animals since and the vast majority don't ever do anything, but there's no need to breed more of them).fishfoodie wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 5:13 pmIt probably doesn't help that the UK seems to have the same kind of cultural blindspot towards dogs killing people, that the US does to mass shootings.sockwithaticket wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:29 pmIncreasingly it's dog owners in general that get on my wick. Yup, our beach is a nightmare with 100’s of dogs a day. People are generally very good at picking up the shit but it’s dogs off leads causing mayhem on the prom, chasing the birds right through where you are sitting etc. I’m a dog lover but I’ve begun giving any dog that pisses on my swimming bag a boot in the ribs. Has caused a couple of arguments of course but fuck the owners, I shouldn’t have to put up with that.sockwithaticket wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:29 pmIncreasingly it's dog owners in general that get on my wick. Also, as mentioned, dogs off leads on the hills is so out of order. I was out in the Pentlands a couple of weekends ago and there were signs everywhere leading from the parking area about sheep and lambs but as we were heading back up came a guy with 2 dogs running wild. Had a word and he couldn’t quite believe there was really an issue until I let him know a local farmer had shot 2 dogs a week earlier

People haven't a clue what a menace they are, & it's only going to get worse as city dwellers decamp to the countryside, & don't realize that this is where other people have to make a livelihood.
Farmer over here had to shut down a popular walk he was facilitating through his land after he was assaulted by someone when he asked them not to bring their dogs onto the land. People really can be pricks for everyone else sometimes.Slick wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 6:04 pmYup, our beach is a nightmare with 100’s of dogs a day. The other thing that annoys me about dogs in the Pentlands is the assholes who think they can let them off the leash when there’s no sheep visible. There are a lot of ground nesting birds up there as well. Keep your fucking dog on a leash.Slick wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 6:04 pmYup, our beach is a nightmare with 100’s of dogs a day. And are there two g’s in Bugger Off?
I'm not fussed about dogs myself because I grew up with a squad of working sheep dogs but I learned I definitely do not like strange dogs rushing up to my small child. And then the owners get offended if you are cautious/gently mention that they might want to get their dogs under control.sockwithaticket wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:29 pmIncreasingly it's dog owners in general that get on my wick. Absolutely to both. I’m not sure which is worse but I’d add the slow pokes who saunter around the course fannying around on the green and taking forever on the tee but refuse to let anyone play through, and the fatties in buggies who hit right up behind you and expect you to get out of their way.

Most of the attacks are by suckler cows and I presume the people walking all have dogs, which are most likely to have been running around.
I think farmers need to be a bit more careful on having cows with calves in fields with footpaths.
People have very little idea how to deal with livestock nowadays and seem a bit entitled about their dogs.
I really don’t think it’s down to the farmers. There’s law regarding bulls in fields with footpaths - fair enough but extending that principle to cows and calves would make life very complicated.Glaston wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 1:01 pmBig increase in the number of people being attacked by cows. When our kids were very young the older kid next door used to have parties going into the wee hours when his parents went away. I used to arm the kids with some pots, pans and wooden spoons early in the morning and let them drum away next to his bedroom. We came to a compromise fairly quickly.Enzedder wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 9:43 pmIf you make any noise after 10pm (on any night) then you are fair game for an early morning wake-upsockwithaticket wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:26 pm People using power tools or otherwise making unnecessary noise at before 10am on Sundays.

I can't imagine the guy down the end of the street who busts out the hedge trimmer at 8:00 is retaliating for me listening to a podcast at barely above a whisper as I do yoga at 23:30.Enzedder wrote: Sun Jun 11, 2023 9:43 pmIf you make any noise after 10pm (on any night) then you are fair game for an early morning wake-upsockwithaticket wrote: Fri Jun 09, 2023 4:26 pm People using power tools or otherwise making unnecessary noise at before 10am on Sundays.

Anyway, 22:00 is a little too early. UK regs stipulate 23:00 and that's fair, although I still don't understand people who can go to bed that early.

Echo on the dogs. Love them but they're not toys, the poor farmers round me lose so many lambs due to predominantly but not exclusively Londoners coming out on day trips and not realising that their pet is still an animal and does animal things. Of course doing that around calves can be very dangerous, there's been a few people crushed to death by cows as a result of the cows being spooked by dogs.
Likewise dogs that jump at strangers. 'He's friendly' well great but I'd rather not have a massive dog I don't know jumping at me and it should be basic etiquette to train it out of them. We're a weird country when it comes to dogs.
Current major bugbear though which I think a lot of you who've been involved in running clubs will identify with - blokes turning up at my cricket club just in time for a warm up, ready to criticise the state of the ground/clubhouse/wicket etc. Didn't see you down here last night/this morning but you're happy to tell me what to do with my time.

Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages, What feats he did that day
