Watching it again today and the Crusaders defense from 77'00" to the final penalty at 79'05" was stunning. Chiefs had all the possession but the red wall forced them back from 5m inside the Crusaders half to inside the Chiefs 22m.

That's true, but it is a lot easier to defend when the kick option has been taken away which, for the Chiefs, by that stage it had. They had no choice but to run it from a static starting point.

Which isn't to downplay the Crusaders' defense at all, just pointing out that the Chiefs were in a situation that required them to be predictable.

Watching a defensive effort relentlessly drive an attacking team backwards through phase after phase is a rare and special thing, regardless of who the teams are. 30m or so is sensational. In the dying moments of a brutal and pulsating final?

The situation in which the Chiefs found themselves was one created by the Crusaders and one that the Crusaders then exploited ruthlessly. It was play worthy of a champion team.

A really classy move would be going public with his support and walking back talk of criticising the referees. Coaches and players should be leading by example and the Chiefs contingent have fallen short of the mark on that.

Has any coach ever gone public in support of a ref in this way? And criticised their own fans?

Like head high impacts and the need to protect against long term injury, I think there's a line in the sand to be drawn here...

regardless of who you support, hate or want to see burn in hell. referees and ARs need to be protected from the sort of abuse we are seeing more and more. It's not right, it's long been held as opposite to the values of the game and it's really easy to take a stand against.

Coaches and players could easily take the initiative on that and join in some sort of unequivocal statement condemning the sort of bullshit we've seen this week.
