edit, on the other hand, Asteroid City - it was mildly amusing and diverting, which is about as much as I get from most of Wes Anderson's films - I really try to like them, but hey ho.
Watched Asteroid City tonight and just didn't get it. One smart idea was worked to death and too few laughs. Probabaly too smart for me then

Sounds like you're just a wokey trying to stop the truth about your child-consuming lizard-person overlords from getting out, ER.

On other matters,Wes Anderson has one genuinely great film - Grand Budapest Hotel. Moonrise Kingdom and Fantastic Mr Fox are also pretty good. The rest of his catalogue has its moments, but not one of them is a fully realised film.

However, the man is a geuine auteur who makes original films. For that, if nothing else, he's worth celebrating in the modern cinematic landscape.

Ethan Coen's first proper effort without his brother (biographic documentaries don't count) looks fun , if a little on the quirky side.

I liked the first half. The rest was fine, but it was a bit too meandering and it felt like something got cut that connected the two halves of the film better.

Good luck with that plan of action, I would rather dunk my head in a pot of boiling water than watch the cringe feast you are about to spend money on.

The new Mission Impossible is a few big set pieces strung together with a ludicrous plot and it’s actually very good.

The obligatory car chase is fun and the part you’ve probably seen where Tom Cruise rides a motorcycle off a cliff is just a small part of the action

There’s nothing new here, it’s just really well done

Market over-saturation was pretty much an inevitability and they've compounded the burn out effect by releasing films no one would care about even if superheros were a fresh product. In the comics Shang Chi is a minor character who pops up in other characters' stories and occasionally has a mini series of his own, ditto for Ant-man and Black Widow. The Eternals are nothing. Why anyone thought to make a film for them is beyond me, that person should probably lose their job.
I take your point about Shang Chi being a minor character but I thought that was possibly the best actual movie in the MCU recent phase. Eternals would have been a better movie if it had been standalone and hadn't included the 20 minutes of unnecessary linking back to the MCU - but you can say that about a lot of the recent Marvel movies. The storytelling suffers because you have to have watched 20 other movies first to make sense of the umpteen scenes with cameos etc.

I thought it was shite and I have found other MI films watchable enough. Fairly overrated but watchable. This was Cruise being a magpie taken to the next level. He just rips off everything around him be that Bourne. The Great Escape or John Wick and he doesn't give a fuck. Also he treats women weirdly. He is always killing them. Why Tom. Why you like killing women?

You forgot the biggest one of all, Bond.

Ethan Hunt is basically Bond now

It looks amazing. Performances are excellent. Never thought of Eddie Marsan as a bad guy before but he knocked it out of the park. Story was doing okay up till the end.
Definitely watch it.

Watched a very strange film last night, Mad God. It's a very scrungy depiction of a hellscape done in mostly stop-motion with essentially zero dialogue and little in the way of an actual plot. As a result of the latter my attention did start to wander a bit by the 50 minute mark, but the whole endeavour deserves a lot of kudos. Rarely do we see anything quite so inventive these days.

Conversely, the Branagh take on Murder On The Orient Express that I watched over the weekend was almost entirely without a novel idea beyond Poirot's absurd 'tache. Just don't see why it needed to exist unless the production company were losing their grip on the rights and needed to put out a Poirot story.

Murder on the Orient Express must have been successful as Branagh's moustache has made two more Poirot films: Death on the Nile (which makes Orient Express look like a masterpiece) and A Haunting in Venice, which is coming out later this year. At least the latter is new to film rather than being a remake like the previous two. Mind you, from the trailer it looks absolutely terrible.

Just looked it up, $353m gross from a $55m budget. That's a surprisingly strong performance for a period drama, so I can certainly see why sequels were greenlit. Death On The Nile did considerably worse ($137m from $90m), though anyone arguing its case in the boardroom could lean on it being among the first films to be released following the Omicron lockdowns of winter '21 and controversies embroiling a couple of its stars as gimping ticket sales.

While I haven't seen it, you're certainly not alone in describing DotN with less than flattering terms. Not that the quality of the film matters to bean counters considering whether to put up the cash for another sequel.

It didn't help that DoTN was filmed entirely in England with all the Egyptian scenery and temples CGI'd.

Looking at the 'all star' cast assembled for the third film, which is distinctly less starry than the casts for the first two, suggests that the bean counters have been much more cautious this time.

I've been awaiting a new Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Rogue One) film and he's got one on the way, but the stupidity of the premise has dulled my enthusiasm.

Humans vs. AI at some point in the future. For some reason Ai have human-ish bodies. Both sides have distinct societies in separate parts of the globe. Humans get word that the AI have developed some sort of singularity level thing and so send off a special forces guy to go take it out. Turns out the singularity thing has been put in a body that looks like a child and he can't off it, film goes from there.

It's basically would you go back in time and kill young Hitler?

Still willing to give it a shot, but that's so dumb. While obviously not all special forces/black ops types are willing to kill children, some of them end up in those roles because they don't have the same moral compass as most of the population and/or are compelled by duty. You'd think if the future of mankind was potentially on the line you'd send someone who wouldn't balk at a possible target.

It's great - very atmospheric on a tiny budget. Hopefully a sequel

It’s genuinely bizarre. Just made me think of whenever you had a shatterproof ruler at school you’d always see how far you could bend it before it snapped, and inevitably one day you’d go a wee bit too far and it would snap. That is what they are doing.

As safe as they are now, things like climbing mountains and setting sail across oceans were once activities that had no known outcome and carried a high risk of death, yet people still voluntarily did them. Forlorn Hopes rarely lacked for volunteers in warfare.

There are simply some human beings who seem to have either a sublimated death wish or complete inability to feel fear or care about their own mortality.

Without looking at what the film was about I saw Kandahar and said to myself 'There will be a world weary translator in this'. Bingo To be fair his other recent disaster movie Greenland wasn't awful as it didn't try and be funny so that made some of it a bit funny
I watched it and didn’t puke. 4/5 nations fighting for control of Afghanistan and showing what I’ve always said: Afghans are whores who’ll take money off anyone.

And Yes, there is a world weary translator in it.

6/10 because Butler doesn’t have to act too hard this week.

Watched 'The Bull' on Netflix and the other half made me turn it off within the first 5 minutes due to absurd levels of violence. This of course made me even keener to watch it.
I thought it was absolutely excellent, taut and compelling with a backstory similar to 'Dead Man's Shoes' and additionally a similar twist to explain the hole in the story.
I'd pay to watch Neil Maskell open an envelope, he's just extraordinary.

I really need to rewatch Kill List at some point I watched it when it came out and thought it was shite, but it's so highly praised I feel like missed something.

There again the horror films of Ari Aster receive loads of positivity and I know they're crap.

Went to see Barbie on Saturday, the wife and daughter saw it last week but we took advantage of the cheap tickets to go as a family (like every other parent looking for something cheap the weekend before the monsters return to school).

Enjoyed it hugely, The Battle of The Kens was hilarious and all the better for having some Marvel alumni taking the piss out of the third act set piece battle. It was great seeing actors not taking themselves too seriously but still fully buying in.

I have absolutely no worthwhile thoughts on whether it's a feminist film, a subject for a Guardian edgepiece on proto-capitalist propaganda or somewhere in between. I never really worried watching it, I just sat back and let the story unfold.

Margot Robbie has a proper slasher smile when she wants to. She was really good, and so was Ryan Gosling. He was definitely Kenough.
