It’s the first time I’ve been to a Test match between the Boks and ABs with real Kiwis in the stadium (gap-toothed Capies at Newlands don’t count) and they were really nice. Smiling and chatty before the match, but still friendly and gracious afterwards.

The last decade or so I’ve only been to Bok Tests against 6N teams (and the lovely Japanese of course) and although the Euros are decent, they’re not a patch on the Maori folk. Thank-you NZ people. Top evening out.
If ever I realised something, it’s that online forums like these and pr are not representative of the overall rugby fans.

It's quite amusing he thinks less penalties, less yellow cards, less red cards, less referee involvement ... will <checks notes> stop the Springboks playing their natural game.

When these refereeing changes came in okes like that thought it would <checks notes> ... stop the Boks playing their natural game because they are stupid and cannot adapt.

The Boks cannot be a team that plays to the laws/refs with clinical precision, and a stupid team that fouls everyone and cannot adapt, both at the same time. The stuff about "no inventiveness" and "boring", is about trying to do just that, to claim the Boks are stupid for NOT being penalised. You can bet when the Boks are penalised that'll be stupid too.

You've got to laugh.

First half was 60 mins. Multiple AB penalties, cards and TMO checks of your filthy didn’t help.

I really think that they should look elsewhere for reasons for the loss. Otherwise it won't get sorted out.

I wasn't commenting on the loss. NZ were poor, SA were exceptional. But something is up with the reffing of a match where you only get 33 minutes play... the new laws were giving us 45 to 50 minutes play in test matches during the six nations... why was there only 33 minutes of game time in this match?

The Boks are the ref bashers and the ref pleasers. The dumbest team and the team that uses the letter of the law to their advantage. The boring team and the try scoring team. The team that beat the ABs by the most any side has, and the average team any side could be.

The Boks are all things to all men.

So we cynically slowed the game down but still managed to score 35 points?

Perhaps we should speed things up and see where that gets us

Barrett gets away with targeted heading hunting of a player on the floor without the ball scott free 👎

Apparently the 35-7 scoreline was punishment enough.

Where the hell are you getting 45-50 minutes from?

Quick check on round 1: https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/ ... it-enough/

39.14, 36.16 and 40.39

Reddit thread with more times that I assume are genuine:

46 was the highest, and was a big outlier, with only 3 matches breaking the 40 minute mark.

Dam Breakdown people must have just used the France v Ireland game at 46 minutes... but then it was the best game of the series...

Interesting to look at some stats from the game...

https://www.espn.com/rugby/matchstats?g ... gue=289234
Attacking
NZ...............................................SA
49% / 58% Possession 1H/2H 51% / 42%
48% / 57% Territory 1H/2H 52% / 43%
4 Clean Breaks 5
39 Defenders Beaten 19
16 Offload 6
88 / 92 (95%) Rucks Won 49 / 51 (96%)
3 / 3 (100%) Mauls Won 8 / 9 (88%)
16 Turnovers Conceded 16
Set Pieces
NZL......Scrums Won.......SA
8/9 (88%).....................8/10 (80%)
Lineouts Won
10/15 (66%).....................15/17 (88%)
Penalty count ended up 14-11.

25 penalties in a test match... whoa the fuck up there, Batman.

Basically, while we know a really good team can win with less territory and possession, there wasn't much between the two teams outside of the cards early against NZ. What differences there were are fixable with a solid reset.... the Boks haven't suddenly become bigger and stronger since losing to NZ a few weeks ago. Yeah sure, splitting the squad into two affected their prep and it showed. However, NZ came into this last game with a similar sort of disjointed lack of focus and they paid the price.

While I can appreciate that our SA supporting fellow posters feel confident in their strut and eagerness to spread some words, any words wherever they can, the fact is they're only one Japan game away from recording a similar upset result.

The ABs are better than what we saw last week. Whether they're good enough is another matter but they're capable of more than they showed. They'll improve. I don't know if the Boks can.

I think they've peaked too early

Love your optimism, Guy, but I'm not so sure. Kolisi has a huge impact on this Boks team. They're significantly better when he's on the park, and he looks to be back to full fitness and top form. Also, they've unearthed a quality midfield duo in Esterhuizen and Moodie, who were excellent against the ABs. I was expecting Jordie and Rieko to have a significant edge, but they got comprehensively outplayed.

Then there's the much vaunted Bomb Squad. Is there a more impactful bench in international rugby? They may not have much improvement left in them, but given the way they just pummelled us, they may not need to. I fully expect them to be there at the business end of the tourney, as they always are.

If they're up against France in a QF, it'll be one for the ages I reckon. And that would mean we play Ireland in another QF... we are soo fucked!

Speaking of France, I don't think we have a shit show of winning tbh. We'll do well to keep the losing margin under 30.

So, France by 29.

All I'm saying is that the ABs are better than they showed last weekend,

I argued for ages that Rieko should be on the wing. Pairing him with Jordie is just inviting the inevitable. It's just another example of Fozzie's weird faith in misplaced players, the Goodbloke Selection Policy in action.

Fuck him, these are his last games. He'll soon be gone.

I totally agree. The All Blacks had a bad day at the office. The Boks were in NZ. The difference is that the Boks show caracter and fight back after a bad start. The Boks can improve a lot from this.

Nienaber said we are in a much better position then 2019 and that is a bit scary.

Huh? Strange comment. The ABs came back from 17-3 down at halftime to beat the Wallabies 23-20 in Dunedin. The Boks lost 35-20 in Auckland after trailing 20-3 at halftime. I'm a bit confused. Are you excusing the Saffer lack of "character" simply because that terrible performance was in NZ?

Genuine question for Kiwis.

Given some of the iconic captains to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, do you see Same Cane doing so in a few weeks?

Honestly, he strikes me as one of New Zealand's weakest captains. He really went missing on Friday when his team needed him.

I don't think a different captain would've made any difference against the Boks. We had 9 starters with 50+ caps, including 3 centurions. Yes, Cane's the captain and quite rightly deserves his share of criticism, but you could argue that the oft-mentioned leadership group utterly failed as a collective.

I think what oom is trying to say is that Boks also show character to come back after being utterly outplayed by the AB's in the first 20-30 min of that test match. They still lost the match handsomely. The tables were turned this time round and the AB's could not absorb that initial pressure nor turn it around later in the game. Instead they turned to cynical play, which just added more pressure to their game, because their started losing players to the sin bin. The AB's just got outplayed by a better team on the day, they didn't have the answers. But as cliched as it sounds it did them the world of good. They haven't suddenly become a terrible team, they are still a brilliant team, who will now be like a wounded beast in that opening test match against France. We did not do France any favours at all, nor anyone else for that matter.

I'm not entirely sure why the NZ pundits are finding it so hard to just accept their team were quite simply just outplayed by a much better team on the day. It was just against SA yes, but since Rassie and co have taken over in 2018 the record now stands at Sa 4, NZ 5 and 1 draw. Should hardly be a "shocker" dropping a game against us anymore.

Okay, I was thinking he was referring to comebacks within a game, but get your point.

And not speaking for any other Kiwi pundits, but I've already acknowledged that we were smashed by the much better team on the day. We were under the pump from the start, and when we lost players to cards and the Boks started scoring there was an air of inevitability about it... after just 20 minutes. It's never a shock losing to the Springboks, but losing by a record margin? Ouch!

Well, as I said, we sure as hell didn't do anybody any favours. The players will be hurting after that loss. I honestly think it was almost a "good" result for NZ before the France opening game, they will not go into that match cold.

Yeah, in all fairness the Boks were pretty good. But the All Blacks were uncharacteristically bad.
They are far better team than what was on display lat Saturday.
