He played well, but not that well.

Most people outside of the Cape did not even know who Deon Fourie was before now. Guys around here could literally not even remember his name, they referred to him as "that old guy who plays flank for WP"

He was fucking fantastic for Deon Fourie. Easily his best match for club or country ever! And within a sardine’s ballhair of Malcolm.Chilli wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:38 pmHe was good Oom, but not Marx good.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:21 pmI wasnt drunk Boet, was on geniune english tee and cookies. Bongi should be worried.
Yes, terrible news for him. But I think that KLA had usurped him as the first-choice wing.LoveOfTheGame wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 1:26 pmAgain feel very sorry for Mapimps, but bloody hell that is some player to have coming in...
With Am back in, I have absolutely no doubt we are going to win the world cup now.

Somewhat astounds me the knowledge gap people have of Fourie.
He was THE annoying fucker for me whenever Sharks played Stomps in their good seasons.

I expect him to put pressure on Bongi for the nr2 jersey. Fourie has been sensational for the Stormers for two seasons. He is like Schalk Burger was on his day. If he dont play , we realize how much he mean for the team.Chilli wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:38 pmHe was good Oom, but not Marx good.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:21 pmI wasnt drunk Boet, was on geniune english tee and cookies. Exactly. He was a good hooker (dodgy throwing aside)and a great openside, making turnovers for fun. Like he made them last night.TheNatalShark wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 2:43 pm Somewhat astounds me the knowledge gap people have of Fourie.

And he's fixed his throwing. Win-win.

You've got the UK coverage right? The fucking commentator at every bloody opportunity saying something about Fourie "out of position" forced me to turn off sound so missed most of refs speaking in second half. Managed to surpass the Aussies crying in a game where Burden went to wing
I think I hate Fourie, beyond the turnovers and little niggle, because is he is just a bloody good all round player. Not the biggest but rarely loses the ball in contact or gets isolated. Wins his feeds without sacrificing stability, an engine that lasts, a nightmare in defensive mauls or good breaks from them. Doesn't have assets that should make him good, but just is - even without the turnovers. Maybe I wanted Burden or Daniel to be similar.

He took a bit of time to adjust to test level. Last night was just the right setup for him. Tonga was very physical and he thrive on it. (hope thats the right word) I will be great to ahve him, Escom, Duanne and Kwagga on the bench. The more poachers the merrier.TheNatalShark wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 4:24 pmYou've got the UK coverage right? Ja he's annoying, and one of the reasons why is because you look at him and think "he'll be kak".TheNatalShark wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 4:24 pmYou've got the UK coverage right? The short version of why he's done what he has and Burden didn't get close to that, is because he did gymnastics until age 14 and was good enough to win two junior SA titles.
Why would gymnastics help in modern rugby? Rugby has become very clinical at the highest level, a lot of the discussion now is about correct body positions and forms. Gymnastics is a sport entirely about correct form (female dominated individual sports/disciplines often are, ballet and yoga have some of the same aspects), it's about making the correct body shapes in a controlled disciplined way and always holding those forms until the routine is done. Obvious how this would be useful in modern rugby, the correct ruck entry, the correct form over the ball, the correct tackle technique, etc. Top level players even talk about "showing the ref the correct picture", like the ref is judging a gymnastics routine.
Boxing and combat sports have some of these form aspects, they've always been very popular in SA, not surprising we're seeing some SA MMA fighters coming through. I've done those sports (boxing and muay thai), there's a utilitarian "whatever works" aspect to them that exists alongside the form elements, they end up as much about the substance as the form (it can very much be an advantage to have unorthodox technique). Swimming and athletics also have form aspects, but you have to get quite high level before a coach is doing video analysis of your running style/throwing technique/butterfly stroke. It's really the female dominated sports/disciplines where form is paramount, and the thing about them is there's no way of doing them through formal clubs/coaching once you're an adult (girls do them but women much less so, a gymnast is done competitively by the time they're 20-ish). Someone does the best sports for training in body positions/form when they're young, or it doesn't happen.
In SA gymnastics is quite popular among girls, same with ballet. Yoga is an adult activity and not a sport (nor is ballet but it has competitive aspects of dancers competing for top roles, which yoga lacks), without the competition element there's nothing rigorous about it. Johan Ackermann took up ballet or yoga when he was still playing (I cannot remember which, I'm recalling this from 10+ years back), he credited it with prolonging his playing career but the way he described it he was using it for suppleness/joint exercise (something like "as long as I keep my knees strong and working I will keep playing"), guessing he did it on his own at home and his form was shit.
In competitive female sports (which mostly means the Olympics) you see this much more, because all the gymnasts and ballet dancers are done at the end of their teens and switch to another sport in their 20s. Australian winter Olympics medals that are won by women who are past it gymnasts in their 20s who switch to a skiing event (usually aerial skiing), is one example. Worth thinking on that a bit, a country that is mostly a desert wins winter Olympics medals with gymnasts that have never skied before, against countries with winter climates where people are born on skis.
A top level South African rugby player that did gymnastics into their mid-teens, is super rare.

I wonder when Am will feature, maybe off the bench? Starting or not selected? With our probable or usual 6/2 split, that makes for an interesting selection for the two backs. Surely both Manie/Handré will feature in the matchday 23. That leaves 1, which usually is a scrumhalf?
It looked like the pressure of Pollard kicking well got Manie's engine running in tune.....you could see that he still looks at the clock begore he kicks....such an elaborate preperation.....Pollard is calm and simple. Manie can definitely do with mentoring from Pollard.
Agree re both Pollard and Manie in the side........but who gets left out?
Seems Rassie is settled on Manie as starter for the finals........Pollard may be on the bench. Depending on the split they go for.“But tries also wins games and the way we play is to try and score tries. I really think we have been attacking much better, like the country has asked us to do and the supporters are always wanting us to be more creative and not just have this kicking game.
“Manie brings that to us.”
Since when has Rassie been worried about what the public thinks...if you look at his preferred side there is no creativity with his centres and fullback. And they have not being scoring tries at will like he is implying....I know there was a huge racial fallout over Pollard being called up. With Polly attacked like crazy...............maybe that is what has influenced Rassie to take this line.

I was thinking Libbok 10 and Pollard 12. De Allende has been quiet.

De Allende has been pretty good, as limited as he is on attack, he is a nailed on starter. Can't see Rassnaber mess with the combinations that we have now. No way will Pollard start at 12. They have to decide if it is Manie at 10 or Pollard. If Manie starts, they may go for a 6-2 split with a 9 and Pollard on the bench. I also doubt Am walks into the team as Kriel has shown good form and Am can't be anywhere near match fitness.

Am the no mouthguard gum chewing genius is straight into the XV. Pollard probably in the XV too, Libbok on the bench. 6/2 split, RasNaber did the 7/1 to test if the side could work with Reinach the only bench back covering scrumhalf/wing, point being they can now go back to 6/2 with a specialist back and Willemse can start (so Libbok/Le Roux/Pollard/Am could all be the second bench back, but it will be Libbok).Sandstorm wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:24 pmAll good points.boere wors wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:02 pm De Allende has been pretty good, as limited as he is on attack, he is a nailed on starter. The 6 forwards should be prop, Fourie, prop, lock, Kwagga, Vermeulen.
Fourie , Kwagga, Vermeulen poaching and speed, Libbok and Reinach.
Fourie , Kwagga, Vermeulen poaching and speed, Libbok and Reinach.
He can maybe help him with his time management, but their kicking techniques are drastically diffirent.
Pollard has a "straigh on" approach (15-20 degrees) to the kicking tee and a smooth kick and follow through.
Libbok has a completely diffirent (and inferior) technique. He approaches the tee at "square" at almost 80-90 degrees and "whips" his leg at the ball when he kicks. This has 2 downsides; shorter range and less control, resulting a bigger margin of error and increased likelihood of a hook or slice on the kick.
Libbok needs to completely change his technique like Monty and Jantjies did and that will take time to bed in some new muscle memory. But he can and should definitely focus on reducing his setup time so he is less rushed. That's a quicker fix.
That was his revised technique when he returned from Wales. Prior to that he had a diffirent one but wasn't as accurate. He traded distance from accuracy and in that 2003-2007 period I wouldn't be surprised if he was kicking at 85%+ he was a sharpshooter, but only had a 35m or so range. He effectively traded 15m of range for 15% of accuracy.
Libbok doesn't even have that luxuary as his range is already limited by his square angle of attack. He'll have to adjust for a more front-on angle and see what kind of range he can get.
