RWC England v (the whole of) Samoa
Absolutely dreadful shit. Farrell was appalling again, I simply cannot think of another player whose legend is so divorced from his performances for England. Complete shit, and he's likely to start the next game at ten because Borthwick is an absolute coward.
Dreadful game plan executed dreadfully. That Farrell+ Tuilagi midfield was as bad as everyone feared. Steward continues to nosedive in form. Mitchell is being asked to play exactly the wrong game. May is a non entity. Earl is not an 8.
Farrell also timed out the kick that took him ahead of Wilkinson, they just didn't notice. But the worst thing he did all day was get the ball 10m from the line, with Samoa panicking, and Marcus Smith outside him ready to take advantage, and refuse to pass it, instead dithering because he wanted to be the one throwing the glory ball and completely fucking it up. Captain Fantastic indeed.

I guess this is to accommodate farrell as you need one of Ford or Smith somewhere. Smith at 15 allows you to play 12 Tuilagi/Lawrence and 13 marchant.

So this shit show and whole fiasco with the minimalist ban was to get Faz past Johnny's point record.

Incredibly poor performance on any number of levels. If you think for a second after that and the year we’ve had that when offered a ticket to our quarter final next week I’d take it you’d be absolutely god damn right. Aaaagghhh I hate myself

Once the opposition teams go through numerous phases then Englands structure begins to break down and the lack of fitness/pace becomes so obvious as gaps appear and defensive line becomes splintered. Tuilagi is just a liability in defence, all over the place - Lawerence is a cracking player and far better defensively and he must start next game! England also need to up pace when getting into defensive lines, all too often caught on the ground or out of position around the breakdown and Samoa ran through the gaps easily - better teams will punish them even more.

I don’t think the fitness point is fair any more. Fiji looked shagged against Georgia so I’d anticipate we’ll finish much better than they will.
Defence remains a worry - if you can string a few phases and passes together there’s just acres of space on the wings. Any semi we may get to could well be an absolute hiding.
Agreed on Tuilagi, we’re praying he’ll produce 2019 form on a broken body. Lawrence is a far superior player now.
And given I have a tendency to give them stick, we only won yesterday because of a phenomenal cover defence and work rate from Care and Smith.

I recall that Ford put in a try saving tackle as well. It like a roll call of our smallest players, shows the value of pace.Paddington Bear wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 10:57 am I don’t think the fitness point is fair any more. Confuse everyone by turning up in something properly left field, like a South Syndey Rabbitohs shirt or a t-shirt with Bucco Bruce in proper creamsicle colours.Lady P wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 8:50 amSurely the best bet is to wear white and hope you blend in as a Fiji fan?Sandstorm wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 7:48 amWear your purple England change stripPaddington Bear wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2023 11:09 pm Incredibly poor performance on any number of levels. Marchants defence is underrated as well. He made some important tackles at full stretch.dpedin wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 10:22 am Once the opposition teams go through numerous phases then Englands structure begins to break down and the lack of fitness/pace becomes so obvious as gaps appear and defensive line becomes splintered. world rugby issued a statement saying they go TMO review for Samoa's disallowed try prior to half time wrong
they are now hiding their tier 1 bias in plain sight

I'd not watched the England game, but had taped it.
As the commentator said, after the ref has awarded a try, there has to be a clear and obvious offence to chalk it off. I'm still not sure whose hand it came off, and given it took several minutes of discussion, it was not clear and obvious to the officials.
Samoa were hard done by.

It's bullshit. World Rugby haven't issued any such statement.weegie01 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 9:49 pmLink? i can't find anything.Deveron Boy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 5:42 pm world rugby issued a statement saying they go TMO review for Samoa's disallowed try prior to half time wrong

The TMO review was technically correct as at least one freeze frame showed that the ball was touched by the Samoan player as well as the two English players who were going for the ball and that is all that is required for it to be a knock on. The TMO is also allowed to intervene right up until the restart now; taking the conversion is no longer the cut off point for a try to be disallowed.
The only question is whether the TMO should have intervened on the basis that the error wasn't 'clear and obvious'. Most fans would say no, but there have already been several cases where the TMO has been checking in the background for knock ons and foul play; we just haven't heard about them because the decision in most of those cases was that the Try was good. If he's been asked to check the try and then sees a knock on, he has a duty to inform the ref. He can't just ignore it on the basis that it was only a small touch and Samoa deserved the Try.
My understanding is that the TMO draws the refs attention to the incident, the ref decides if it is clear and obvious.Lobby wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 11:16 amIt's bullshit. If that is correct, there is nothing wrong with what the TMO did, but the very fact it took so long to work out if the Samoan player had touched of itself meant it was not clear and obvious. All imho of course.
