For AF.Dr Danie Craven, said youngsters should play barefooted because it encourages them to play "running rugby", they are more sure-footed and it reinforces the idea that rugby is after only a game, especially at that level.
When our Headmaster deigned to organise fixtures against an Afrikaans school, who refused to play in boots, we were forced to wear "plimsolls" i.e sneakers or the more popular South African term - "tackies".
The push towards barefoot rugby in the Natal Rugby Union has accelerated. In my day, the odd representative side had a barefoot (Afrikaans) player or two amongst 13 or 14 shod (English) players - this was dangerous. The Natal team, for many years, did not compete in the national primary schools week because they did not play barefoot but happily pressure has changed that.
Now they actively promote Mini Rugby as curtain raisers at the King's Park Stadium before the Natal Sharks games. They parade onto the ground with banners like "Bakers Mini Rugby do it Barefoot" and in the match programmes there advertisements which state that Mini Rugby is safe because we do it barefoot. I'm writing this just before I go to play touch rugby at lunch time, we all play barefoot, of course!

Fat Frans and Kitshoff did their barefoot scrumming in the Boland. They scrummed in Soup Rugby as under 19s.

The Afrikaans kids dont do soccer in primary school. Playing bare foot on the astro will be much better then playing rugby in South Africa Inland which have frost in winter and no grass mostly.

Average Joe will know everything about playing the frost of the rugby pitch as a young kid. Kicking a rugby ball with cold blue tones needs a special skill.

Of course, because nobody else in the world has ever done thatOomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 1:39 pm Average Joe will know everything about playing the frost of the rugby pitch as a young kid. Kicking a rugby ball with cold blue tones needs a special skill.

Sardy is right though. Both sets of supporters know they have a side capable of winning the RWC, both know they could lose this one, both will be hurting if they lose this one.
It's shit this is the quarterfinal match. One side basically doesn't even get remembered, given the draw the other is very likely to reach the final.
I don't even remember who wins the 3rd place play-off._Os_ wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 2:43 pmSardy is right though. Both sets of supporters know they have a side capable of winning the RWC, both know they could lose this one, both will be hurting if they lose this one.

I do when the Boks are in it, shows heart to play that match and win it. Boks have only gone out in the quarters twice, 2011 was probably my worst experience as a supporter, good/excellent team that went nowhere not even the 3rd place match.Sandstorm wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 3:08 pmI don't even remember who wins the 3rd place play-off._Os_ wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 2:43 pmSardy is right though. These comments around not touching du Pont's head are interesting. I think it will affect him more than us. Of course a reckless hit on his head is a red card, it would be for any player. But he'll be the one second guessing when he goes into contact.
Yep, it's a shit situation for him to be in, especially with the stakes being so high. I hope he makes it through without any further damage.

Agree. The management should have taken the decision out of his hands and said "you're not playing". Unfortunately, Fra doesn't have a great track record for respecting its own player's safety and especially ones from Toulouse: think Castaignede (effectively ended his career) and Fritz.

You just hit the nail there line and sinker. This test will depend on the way Manie runs the 1st half. My english wont allow me to write a filofax but I am glad Rasnaber is prepared to put their trust in Manie. Obvious we will try and run them off their feet in the first 60 minutes and then play conservative with Faf and Pollard to settle it.
Its a make or break test for Libbok. If he get it right, we will nail this one.
Go Manie!
Interesting team.
After all that noise about 6-2, 7-1, 8-0, we go for a boring 5-3 split on the bench
Cobus ahead of Faf is a huge call. I can see why, I think CR has played out of his skin whenever given the chance and may be a better match to try and nullify the threat from Anton "not the face" du Pont.
Duane ahead of Jasper too. I think he's picked as our one and only jackle in the starting XV.
I would have been tempted to start Moody on the wing.

The experiments have been done Boet. Against France and Ireland, you cant afford to give them possession with high kick and charge and box kicks. You need to run at them, test their defense, keep possession.boere wors wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 8:13 amTime for experimenting should be over by nowOomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 8:11 amYou just hit the nail there line and sinker. Yes. I also went to the France vs Wallaby final. What a day that was for me. First time in the UK and got lost after the final, feel like a man on the moon between all the dragons._Os_ wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 8:26 amI still remember the Breyton Paulse try from that one, a good win. 1999 was the one which got away.OomStruisbaai wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 4:40 pmI attend the 1999 in Cardiff when we beat the All Blacks.
