The ambassador is clearly upset but Burley wants to make a point about not going too hard in Gaza. She does a shit job amd everyone pretty much agrees with that
Burley is a piece of shit
So is the Ambassador to be fair
I didn't watch it but anyone representing a Netenyahu govt is going to be a tad unhinged imho.
That is at the best of times after the HAMAS slaughter it's going to be somewhat magnified.
Rightly so some may say.

intransigent
/ɪnˈtrɑːnsɪdʒənt,ɪnˈtransɪdʒənt/
adjective
unwilling or refusing to change one's views or to agree about something.

I don't think I've witnessed any issue where the intransigence is so strong on both sides. Every single thing the Israeli ambassador said in that interview I've heard said by the militant Palestinian side at some point over the years and decades.

This is different this time. This is more shocking to Israelis than anything since the Shoah

The current events are probably pretty shocking to the Palestinians too.

My point is that this only likely to harden the intransigence on both sides.

I honestly don't have answers, who the fuck does?

I just don't think that what is happening right now is an answer, it won't end here, it will only escalate.

My view is its beyond that point now. We are in an out and out war situation now. I mentioned Sri Lanka earlier in the thread but there was a situation were eventually they decided to go all in and destroy the Tamil Tigers after decades of resistance. Never had the cachet of the Palestinians but very similar really. The US have had the Israelis on a leash forever but I suspect the current geopolitical situation with Russia might have changed that. Could get terribly messy and Iran is going to have its doors busted open. Qatar likes money and shit so can they pivot? Very difficult for them and I could see Qatar as a place disappearing.

I think you are right, this is going to be fucking terrible, like, FUCKING TERRIBLE, involving many countries and factions.

The one thing that can perhaps stop that, the one country that can stop that, is Israel stepping it down.

We can't ignore Ukraine, I think war in the ME makes the situation in Ukraine worse through less accountability and less of a spotlight on what is going on there.

That's what I would want if I lived there.

No No No No

You've gone off at the deep end like you guys always do.

There is a powerful actor in this and it's Israel.

They have the power to dictate what happens now, they have the power to make this an all out war in the ME with far-reaching consequences or they can draw back and seek another solution. The power is all with Israel they have no one in the international community telling them not to set fire to Gazza, what they do next will have far-reaching consequences.

So this is the plan c69. Pretty monumental tbf and probably what the UN should have expected. They have spent years goading the Israelis and here we are
Well it wouldn't be so bad if they lifted the blockade.

Blockade + "end all responsibility for life in Gaza" is like something from about 70 years ago.

Support their enemy? Are you mad. Qatar and Iran and Hamas and by extension the Palestinian people, that's how it works, have pledged to wipe them off the map. Why in fucks name would they make it easier to get arms into Gaza? That would be utterly retarded. Your problem is cultural Anti semitism, as with many in this bored. Your anti Jewishness is so ingrained in you after generations that you don't even feel it any more. It's just a reflex action whenever anything happens that involves Israel. No other state that had been repeatedly attacked by multiple neighbours and just had children killed and women raped and spat on would illicit this response unless the person responding had something wrong in the wiring in their brain. I don't want you to use your cultural anti semitism as an excuse but rather acknowledge its there.
FFS you seem to have overstepped the mark there.

I think that was me questioning Netanyahu's unpopularity.

We centrist's all look the same to you !!

I had explicitly clarified I was asking about his popularity in reference to his reaction to Hamas. Not the general view on his previous politics. Because that is how the statement by you or another had read. That he was unpopular for the way he reacted to the terrorist invasion.

I hope you’re ok with me using the word terrorist, btw.

Well it could be pointed out that Islamophobia has been an ingrained trait in Europe going back a thousand years, it could be extrapolated from that that anyone supporting Israel right now does so from a racist point of view, witting or unwitting, but that would be a stupid thing to say.

Well I don’t think it’s accurate or helpful to suggest that anyone hoping for a ceasefire and an alternative to war is by definition antisemitic.

The thread has become useless at that point.

Sorry but you are way off the mark with any assumption about the environment I grew up in. It was staunchly pro Israel and Golda Meir was a big hero to my Dad and I admired much about her growing up. As I have posted earlier on this thread.
Kindly fuck off with such assumptions.

Everyone's favourite climate activist got dogpiled online for having an Octopus plush toy (which, as an aspie, she uses to communicate feelings) in a photo of her pledging support for gaza.

Apparently, Nazi propaganda used to liken Jewish control of institutions to tentacles and therefore cephalopods, even cute toys, are Verboten!

If this isn't a perfect distillation of how ridiculous the discourse around the conflict has become, I don't know what is.

I don't believe she knew about it before, but if someone else suggested putting it there I'd be suspicious of them. Has she had a plushie in any other photo? Are the signs not a pretty explicit expression of how she feels?

It's a dog whistle to those that recognise it. Like integrating the numbers 8, 18 or 88 into messages. Commonly used in tweets etc and having eight words in the final sentence. Most people wouldn't even think to count it, even many of those that do would put it down to chance, but those neo Nazis would read something very different in it.

Those Octopus toys are pretty widespread among those on the ASD spectrum apparently. They're reversible with a happy and grumpy face, so the owner can help indicate to those they're with where they're at emotionally. Given it's usage it's most likely something she just had on her anyway and she set it down on the nearest surface (the couch) while the picture was taken. I don't think the suggestion is that she needed it to express how she feels about the Gaza-Israel issue.

It's not a dogwhistle if the person doesn't intend it to be. You can't control whether nutters actively seek hidden messages in the benign or indifferent.

I realise that, but it wasn't just set down, it's a clearly framed part of the photo. It may well have been nothing more, but with the rest of the setting it's hardly a stretch to question the potential anti Semitism side right? I know what they are, but I don't recall ever seeing one in her photos before. I don't know if it's her's or was suggested by someone.

Obviously people are on higher alert than normal at the moment, but there's more than enough depressingly overt nonsense out there without needing to project onto cuddly toys. It seems the kind of stretch one really needs to limber up for.

Depends on where you are. In Ireland you could post any sorts of Hamas atrocities or cheering Palestinians and they will still support them
Well thankfully I know nobody that supports Hamas or their slaughterous terrorist ilk.

How many live in Gaza and the West Bank?
You do realise that the designated areas in the South are still being bombed don't you?

They are terrorists and i have no issue with that label. I wouldn't presume anyone who criticises Israel is an anti-semite and/or that they would support Hamas. Have you considered part of the reason i might expect more from Israel is because i regard them as a developed (historically) democratic nation? I've not criticised the response by Israel just depressed by the continuation of this religious conflict and the waste of life. I can't really see an end to it.

I have bugger all time for all of the gulf kingdoms/dictatorships and looking forward to the end of the reliance on fossil fuels because it diminishes their power (Russia's as well) and am well aware of the extreme forms of Islam they push and terrorism they fund (including this case). I am also very aware of the money going into UK politics to the Tories from these pricks in recent times and the sporting assets they have bought. The same pricks who fund Man City fund Hamas and i don't watch that rotten entity much like i didn't watch matches featuring the disgusting Chelsea (who really should have been asset stripped and made an example of). What i've noticed with Russia and other shitty regimes is they like to fund arseholes regardless of right or left leanings. They just fund whoever is going to cause most damage and let them get away with shit.

I had that overt Anti semitism in my upbringing in school as well. I remember as a kid being able to connect the contradictions specifically around Jews as money lenders. This was held up as an example of their immorality and usary in all forms.was evil. It even gave us a violent passionate Jesus as he cleansed rhe Jewish temple with his righteousness. I remember two things struck me. Everyone was Jewish so the people getting loans where Jewish. The poor were Jewish. The lepers were Jweish. I also thought the Ireland of the time had a limited number of pillars that held it all up, or supposedly so. The priests, the Gardai, teachers, farmers and you guessed it bankers. So if the lads in my class had parents who were bankers maybe it's not the fucking Jews fault after all. It's just humans being fuck heads
None of my schools were like that. I wrongly assumed you had a more secular education. I did resent being forced to do Religious Education at GCSE as it lacked any questioning of religion and was the only class i was repeatedly kicked out of due to finding offensive sections in the old testament, asking why priests molested children and asking if Saddam Hussein was a good muslim but mostly i was just pissed off i couldn't do a subject i wanted to do.

The thread has become useless at that point.
The thread became useless from the 2nd post. If you Googled intransigence, this thread and the one over the road would be right up there. I doubt a single person has changed their viewpoint, even the middle-of-the-road ('they're all f***wits' views) people haven't changed.

I think brave is a bit emotive but yes exactly what should be asked to the terrorists.

You've stepped well over multiple marks. No nuance at all. That you knew nothing of Netanyahu's unpopularity said a lot. A reminder to you that you come from a mostly secular society.

My schooling was in Catholic Education and maybe because it was in working class South Wales valleys we were never in Primary or Comprehensive school taught the Jews were our enemy.
Condemning the Jews or Israel would not have been tolerated.

Apparently, Nazi propaganda used to liken Jewish control of institutions to tentacles and therefore cephalopods, even cute toys, are Verboten!

If this isn't a perfect distillation of how ridiculous the discourse around the conflict has become, I don't know what is.
Zionist, climate-denying, misogynist conspiracy theorists having a field day.

Tbf holding a "stand with Gaza" sign not long after the Government of Gaza committed the most barbaric atrocities, and are still holding hundreds of hostages, is an utter cuntish thing to do.

So holding an Israeli flag etc after the siege of Gaza and thousands slaughtered in rocket attacks could be considered by many to exactly the same.
What's the death score at the moment.
A life is a life an Israeli life is as previous as a Palestinian life
The losers are the ordinary people caught up in this cluster fuck.

The UK news has personalised the Israeli deaths, many stories of minute detail with lots of interviews, certainly on the BBC anyway. The Palestinian deaths in Gaza are shown very differently, impersonal with groups, mass graves, few interviews because of access and language. This makes the feeling of those deaths different.
