I see Dr Michael Mosely's body has been found on Symi, less than 10 meters from Symi town and potential safety. Likely to have died of heatstroke. Whilst he seemed reasonably well equipped with his sun brolly it's sadly another example of the "mad dogs and Englishmen" saying.

The suspicious ex detective in me says there will be slightly more to the reasons for his attempts to walk back to town other than the going for a stroll suggestion.

The body wasn't that close to Symi or Pedi, the last town he was seen in, but it was only a few metres away from a bar at Agia Marina beach (lying just outside the fence around the bar area), so even closer to safety.

Apologies, when they said the marina, I presumed the main one down at Symi. I know where you are now as we popped in there on a boat trip.
We went to Symi three years ago in June and I think it was pretty close to being the hottest few days I have ever experienced. I went for an early morning hike to explore the small buildings on the hill above the harbour and it just about floored me.

Sad news that raises all sorts of questions. I've been following the story and not being familiar with that part of the world, googled up. Looking at the map of the area it's hard to believe anyone could be struck down with heatstroke with buildings and people all around... especially someone with a medical background who must have realised he was in some degree of distress. The heat can knock you around of course, but it's not instant. I wonder if he might have suffered heart issues or perhaps something like a stroke?

WTF do I need a Philips head screwdriver to open a UK/IE Plug, & Loosen the cable, but a slot head screwdriver to loosen the terminals ???

Why couldn't they just use Philips screws throughout ?

Has anyone any experience of trying to provoke being offered redundancy, without giving their employers an opportunity to fire them for cause ?

As I mentioned previously, we've had another major RIF, & now I'm one of the few left behind, & frankly don't feel like hanging around another six months, & would much prefer to have the summer off !

.... as it happens, at the end of last week into my inbox dropped a request for a meeting with the manager just below our CIO, boy would I love to give them a piece of my mind; but I'm so pissed off at the moment, I think I'm just going to turn off my few very filters, & give honest responses to any questions, which might just get me fired, but I really just couldn't give a fuck at the moment, even though I would prefer to take the cash & run.

Yep, I did about 30 years ago from a Bank. Got 6 months pay to leave after I warned the union about upcoming redundancies. Bosses were not happy so after they informed the staff affected (I refused to do that), I asked for a redundancy offer. I had it in 30 minutes, asked to chat to the wife, asked them to double it and they did.

They tried to insert a clause about not getting involved in upcoming litigation from the other staff but I just crossed that out and signed the form.

Started my own business 4 weeks later.

From what I can recall of our visit I don't think there would be anyone actually living where he was found it was just a bar/restaurant on a very secluded beach so if he has arrived after everyone left?

If you look at the pictures it is just not a route and sane person would attempt to hike, for no reason in the middle of the day. The whole thing just defies logic.

Philips screws actually aren't great for camming out either. They came about because Henry Ford didn't want to pay for Robertson screws.

Quite an interesting career progression for Glen Jackson. The reason I ended up staying in the BoP is I have a mate here, we worked together in WA and later in SA. His recently deceased Dad was friends with GJ, he used to work for him occasionally on his farm up the back of Whakamarama... it's a weirdly small world at times.GJ was assistant coach at the Drua this year I think, under Mick Byrne, who is moving to take over the national team. I hope it goes well for everyone involved, there's been some serious development work put into the Drua with obvious progress made.

Half hour doco here outlining his progression from Zimbabwe schoolboy through professional rugby and into the Australian Senate. This is a bit over a year old now and I've followed some of his work within the Australian parliament. He's a formidable performer who doesn't waste time beating around the bush, he goes straight in hard. I'm a fan.

I was in the back of a Tesla today for the first time, a taxi. I could barely get in the thing, I had to dislocate my neck and carry my head with me to get into the seat, slight exaggeration, but it would have been handy to be able to do that. Then my head was pressed against the glass roof for the duration of the journey, luckily it was only about ten minutes.

I'm not that tall, six one maybe a skoosh over but not much. Anyone taller than that would really struggle.

So that's Tesla off the list when I look for a new car shortly, it didn't look like the driver had much more room.

I quite liked the screen though, the accurate live traffic and whatever else is around you along with the satnav map is a good thing - given that my car is 21 years old I'm easily impressed with stuff like that.

Tesla has done well on the integrationo f things like that, but the whole user experience seems mad and its a case of 'look what we can do' rather than 'we should do this'. Car companies in the 90s in particular spent a fortune on human interface/interaction specialists to get away from small, fiddly buttons and replace these with easy to grasp dials and controls that were intuitively placed and could be located by touch. Car radios are good examples of this. A flat screen goes against this (I am aware there is voice control as well, it's not a perfect system)

Yeah, I'd probably find the screen a distraction. I use my phone as a satnav and I find it much better to have it directly in front of me so that it only takes a quick glance down to view it, rather than across and down - I think I'd get pissed off with it and ignore it, and then start using my phone again. (the taxi driver had to take a hand off the wheel to zoom in on the map to see which turning to take - not good)

I guess they will project satnav on to the windscreen soon enough if they haven't already done so - my brother's car has projection of speed etc on his.

Thanks to the beautiful, & practical design, there's no rearview mirror, instead you just have the honking big display & a rear facing camera.

And I believe they moved all the stalk controls to the touch screen too, so you have to take your hand off the wheel, look over to the display, & find the indicator icon, to do one of the most common action you have driving in any city; fucking idiotic !

I'm a laggard when it comes to using voice control, I prefer the tactile experience of switches... so I end up using the screen for controlling stuff like ac and navigation. Basically, I think it's dangerous, a deliberate distraction that takes the driver's eyes off the road and here in NZ, we don't have the space or time for that malarkey.

I really don't like screens for anything you might need to change while driving but you can mess up buttons as well. A friend recently bought a newish BMW and we counted 78 buttons, as well as the small flat screen. That's awful design if you ask me.

On the plus side it was ridiculously smooth and quiet compared to anything i've been in recently.
