He had his demons, for sure, but I don't believe anyone matched him, maybe Chuck D in terms of being such an outstanding and easily-identified vocalist, but there aren't many.

I had hopes for Michael Franti but I haven't heard much about him for a while

Huge gulf in quality between him and Franti, Gil Scott hardly put a foot wrong despite being an alkie and junkie. Two of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, was lucky enough to see the Last Poets at the Jazz Cafe too, fucking unbelievable.

100% agree.
My brother had the dubious privilege of being the Dj on one of his tours and old Gil would happily take literally anything on offer which meant a total lottery on how he’d turn up.
You’d hope this one.

Saw this fella Wednesday night:

Great live artist, his backing band were 3 youngish Brits, proper tight band a lot of fun, his daughters got a lovely voice too.

Apart from that the most diverse crowd I've seen at a gig probably ever. Lots of brown and black faces across all age groups, usually I'm the token non white, sometimes I feel like a proper coconut.
