Distraction from the MAGA visas civil war also.
Or any of his other many piles of bullshit and problems. It’s as sad as it is funny he got back in because there was nobody else better instead.

Smells like a protection racket to me.
Its a long game. We had a very competitive textiles industry employing a lot of people in the Cape until Asian imports started flooding the market and basically closed down the local industry. You need to protect local jobs.

We had a very competitive textiles industry in the UK, especially Lancashire, until the sceptics rather took over the scene. (And of course even whilst we had that market we were importing much of the raw material and adding value for ourselves rather than the producer, and by ourselves I mean the owners of the cotton mills rather than the workers)
Anyway, things change, and you can try being protectionist but others respond and the whole is less than good. That doesn't mean you simply abandon those left behind in a global market, but unless you're going to cancel things like air/sea travel, phones, the internet even then the market is global, so why advance less productive aims?
What there is scope for rather than the more simplistic tariff system is agreements between nations and supranational bodies that in essence establish NTBs, minimum standards if you will around worker, environmental considerations and whatnot, and that can alleviate some concerns around 'unfair' competition. What there shouldn't be scope for is going out of our way to avoid change, because that's backwards thinking
Moving to higher value jobs that are hard to offshore is the thing. Sounds easy but it's not.Rhubarb & Custard wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 10:14 amWe had a very competitive textiles industry in the UK, especially Lancashire, until the sceptics rather took over the scene. There's so little info given that it reads like it might be a more straightforward shakedown. Trump's mind probably thinks that other countries owe them tribute.

I'm a bit surprised that the GOP didn't try & stop any deal before the Inauguration, like they did with Iran, but I suppose Bibi is under intense pressure, & he needs the win.
Republicans in-fighting at a lower level.
A Georgia state senator who was previously banned from the state House chamber was arrested Thursday when he tried to enter the chamber for the governor’s state of the state speech and got into a shoving match with House employees.
State Sen. Colton Moore, a Republican from Trenton, is among the chamber’s most right-wing members. He signaled Wednesday that he would seek a showdown when he called House Speaker Jon Burns, a fellow Republican, a “tyrant” on social media.
The arrest is one of several examples of state officials trying to restrain lawmakers or onlookers as legislative sessions begin in 2025.
Burns banned Moore from the House chamber last year after Moore denounced late House Speaker David Ralston on a day when Ralston was being honored and his relatives were watching. In a speech, Moore called Ralston “one of the most corrupt Georgia leaders we’ll ever see” over allegations that Ralston improperly delayed court cases he handled as a lawyer. Burns called Moore’s remarks “vile” when he announced the ban, saying it would remain until Moore apologized.

Strong Vl"hurg vs G'gugvunt energy there.
Comparisons online to JFK. It was 22 degrees Fahrenheit when he was sworn in, and he spoke without an overcoat.

We all know he's a bag of hot air, but NBC have a list of 11 things Trump has said he'd do "day one". https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald ... wtab-en-us

Pardoning the J 6th defendants means they accept a guilty verdict, but just don't spend time in gaol, so it's a mixed blessing !Hal Jordan wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 7:34 pmThree things I think he will do.
First is easy pen waving, the second two are punching down, which the shithead piece of shit loves to do because he's a worthless cunt.
This will piss off an cop with a room temperature IQ, an admittedly small group, but still ....
The whole DEI/Trans rights/treating people like human beings will absolutely happen though

Zuckerberg's kissing the ring is mentioned at the start of this long read about Stephen Miller.
Miller would fit perfectly into the world of Handmaid's Tale btw.

More and more, I'm seeing the world through the lens of Terry Pratchett books
'You tell them a lie, and then when you don't need it anymore you tell them another lie and tell them they're progressing along the road to wisdom. Then instead of laughing they follow you even more, hoping that at the heart of the lies they'll find the truth. And bit by bit they accept the unacceptable. (Guards Guards 1989).

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... ge-lawsuitElon Musk’s “department of government efficiency” (Doge) program is expected to be sued within minutes of Donald Trump being sworn in.
The 30-page lawsuit, obtained by The Washington Post, challenges the legality of the government advisory committee Trump claims he’ll create, by alleging it violates federal transparency rules on disclosure, hiring and other practices.
In any sane world you'd have Musk nowhere near anything.

Though you do wonder how, in a sane world, out of all of the millions of Americans, Trump gets elected president. And not once, but twice.

As per myself, are y"all feeling suddenly and gloriously unburdened of what has been?
Suck it up guys.
And gee whizz, the '10 percent for the Big Guy fella' has just slipped in a last-second pardon for all members of the Biden Crime Family literally just moments before Trump was inaugurated.
Done while everyone was otherwise distracted.
