To be fair to his ma, he looks like the ‘jock’ from a 1990s teen high school drama. Played by a guy in his mid 30s.Tichtheid wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 7:39 pmKingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 7:37 pmHe’s looking comfortable at this level. He was due to play last year but was removed from the squad at the last minute as World Rugby felt it was a player safety issue for him to play. Presumably for opposition loosies.
He was only 17 then and didnae have a note frae his ma.
The rules are you can't play this level at 17, apparently

Scotland 5 couldn’t have been more legal braking through the middle of the maul there. No idea what the ref thought she saw.

I’ve seen considerably worse halves from our 20s. Italy have been decent at this level for a while and we competed pretty well with them.
Their 5 is a beast and they look to have a few decent strike runners in their backs.

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Very Scottish to find a dominant scrum in an era when the scrum has been so borked by law tweaks It gives minimal advantage and what you really need is a secure lineout and to win the breakdown battle...
Plenty of good stuff but not enough punch in the backs either in defence or attack. Was downhill after the mass subs - Cowan was the only one who kicked to any effect and once he was off it was just headless.

He loves nothing more than talking up Scotland to believe that we can win before immediately writing a column about how much of a let down we are unable to cope with the belief. Boring.
Had a thought just now: despite all of the smack talked about our selection policy, tomorrow 12 of our starting 15 will be Scots born and bred. Fewer imports than Ireland.
Bench has a few imports, but out of 8, 3 are born and bred, plus Kyle Rowe, who moved to Scotland aged 8.

This is why I am sick of him. He does it every year. He talks us up for a while, but absolutely adores putting the boot in when things go wrong. Why the BBC thinks it’s a good idea to have an Irishman as their chief Scottish rugby guy is beyond me. I guess maybe it’s a positive that he is putting the boot in prior to the game (in case he can’t after?)I like neeps wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 9:23 pmHe loves nothing more than talking up Scotland to believe that we can win before immediately writing a column about how much of a let down we are unable to cope with the belief. True. On the other hand, his books are excellent.Yr Alban wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:00 pmThis is why I am sick of him. He does it every year. We seem to think our forwards can bash through them. Confident.
Edit: we can.

Nice to see our forwards running some nice hard lines off short flat passes

Italy remind me of c. 2017 Scotland. Great broken field running and some excellent players but powderpuff in defence and a weak set piece.

It's a reversal of the old Italy with the great pack and mediocre backs.KingBlairhorn wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2025 2:29 pm Italy remind me of c. 2017 Scotland. Great broken field running and some excellent players but powderpuff in defence and a weak set piece.

Scored the try but I fucking hate when the ref says use it at a maul and they don’t use it. 99% of the time it’s so thick.

That scrum was townsend thinking too much. Push it one side and have Russell and Duhan break that way only for Fagerson to break the other. Has to run around the scrum so you lose the benefit of surprise..
Yep. It was a total clown show. Your biggest weapon lined up immediately behind the scrum with a sea of options either side and you don't use him. The relief of the Italians was palpableI like neeps wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2025 2:56 pm That scrum was townsend thinking too much. Classic bit of commentary picking up on the surprise on Whites face before we’d seen the replay
All the money you made will never buy back your soul
Ritchie also being his annoying best without any spectacular
