President Trump and US politics catchall
Latest in the long list of things he doesn't understand - ending the war would let them go to the Football world Cup in the USA.

Except of course qualifying has already started without them. So there's no way to get them in.

It's odd messaging from a human, or perhaps standard for Vance, but that is what fans normally do.

Yeah, it's so weird, given how welcoming most actual everyday Americans are.sturginho wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 12:45 pmWe want them to come. We want them to celebrate. We want them to watch the game. If I went to a World Cup in Australia, Qatar, Japan..., I think they'd all expect me to piss off once my trip was up. Frankly we'd expect people to piss off too. It's odd to say from Vance because most people are going to want to go home ,and not just because they'll have paid for a return ticket.sturginho wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 12:45 pmWe want them to come. I think he's making it clear that all fans from S America, Africa and Asia who turn up better have a return ticket and shouldn't think about trying to disappear into the countryside to find work.sturginho wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 12:45 pm

If you can afford a ticket to a world cup match then you are not the kind of immigrant that Vance is worried aboutSandstorm wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 1:14 pmI think he's making it clear that all fans from S America, Africa and Asia who turn up better have a return ticket and shouldn't think about trying to disappear into the countryside to find work.sturginho wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 12:45 pm

Judging by his recent comments, I wouldn't be so sure he's excluding Europeans from that category.Sandstorm wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 1:14 pmI think he's making it clear that all fans from S America, Africa and Asia who turn up better have a return ticket and shouldn't think about trying to disappear into the countryside to find work.sturginho wrote: Wed May 07, 2025 12:45 pm

And when they start to lay-off dock workers, truckers and shut down warehouses etc, how is the Shitgibbon going to try and spin that as being a win for tariffs?
Ports of LA, Long Beach already seeing 44% drop in docked vessels
Fewer ships mean fewer products unloading at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
As the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach this week begin to feel the impact of tariffs imposed on foreign goods by the Trump administration, a reduction in traffic and cargo was visible at the busiest ports in the U.S. on Monday.
Port officials said traffic is down nearly half at the two Southern California ports, signaling that there are fewer products now in LA from China and that there will be fewer jobs.
“We are at a point of inflection. It’s kind of dire,” Mario Cordero, port of Long Beach CEO said Monday. “What happens here is going to be an indication of what's going to occur in the supply chain. We have less vessel calls, less cargo now.”
The port of Long Beach is already reporting a huge drop in traffic this week with 34 canceled sailings from ocean carriers to Long Beach. The neighboring port of Los Angeles is also seeing 36 cancelations.
Things have not been this slow since the coronavirus pandemic, Cordero said.
“Covid gave us an insight of what happens when the cargo stops. We certainly don’t want to repeat that scenario again,” he added.
The two ports, which moved 20 million containers last year, are showing a 44% drop in docked vessels in the week of May 4 compared to last year.
“Every four containers means a job, so when we start dialing back, it means less job opportunity,” Gene Seroka, port of LA CEO, told Bloomberg News Sunday, predicting a sharp decline in dock work for employees, no more overtime or double time and potentially less than 40 hours of work a week.
“Less containers, less jobs, less business for truckers,” Cordero echoed the dire projection.

I don't know how to check that platform, but even their official release seems to go with something he probably came up with without considering the end of the war in the East? The article does specify Europe, but then doubles down on a lot of things that you'd hear coming out of his mouth about America being the greatest, etc.

It’s also the wrong flag. It’s got 50 stars, instead of the 48 it had in 1945.sturginho wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 4:09 pmIt is indeed. Mayor of Newark has been "arrested" by ICE.
Fox headline: DEMS Storm Ice Facility, Newark.
Thought I understood the verb until now but maybe not. Does simply showing up count?
Mexico has sued tech giant Google over its labelling of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a change made by US President Donald Trump via executive order, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday (Saturday NZT).
Sheinbaum did not provide details of the lawsuit during her daily press briefing, but said that Google had been sued.
Mexico’s Foreign Relations ministry had previously sent letters to Google asking it to not label Mexican territorial waters as the Gulf of America.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The body of water has shared borders between the United States and Mexico. Trump’s order only carries authority within the US Mexico, as well as other countries and international bodies, do not have to recognize the name change.
Mexico argues that Gulf of America should only apply to the part of the gulf over the United States continental shelf.
In February, Sheinbaum shared a letter from Cris Turner, Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy, stating that Google will not change the policy it outlined after Trump declared the body of water the Gulf of America.
As it stands, the gulf appears in Google Maps as Gulf of America within the United States, as Gulf of Mexico within Mexico and Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) elsewhere.
Turner in his letter said the company was using Gulf of America to follow “longstanding maps policies impartially and consistently across all regions.”
The Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years. The Associated Press refers to it by its original name while acknowledging the new name Trump has chosen. The White House moved in February to block the AP from being among the small group of journalists to cover Trump in the Oval Office or aboard Air Force One, with sporadic ability to cover him at events in the East Room.
The AP sued three Trump administration officials over access to presidential events, citing freedom of speech in asking a federal judge to stop the blocking of its journalists.
A federal judge ordered the White House last month to restore the AP’s full access to cover presidential events, affirming on First Amendment grounds that the government cannot punish the news organization for the content of its speech.
The judge's decision granted emergency relief while the lawsuit proceeds.

Some speculation that they are trying to provoke a violent response so they have a casus belli to implement their own version of the reichstag fire decree.
The law subreddit is very good at the moment and there's great discussion there on how this is progressing and much of it was foreseen.
