Opening day of the Championship season under wall to wall sunshine. On account of the forecast and a failure to use annual leave I’ve taken a late day off and am getting sunburned at Chelmsford. Essex starting brightly in the attempt to deny Surrey a fourpeat

England have a looming issue at opener. Crawley has a 50 but has scored 33 or 34 in total across his other innings.

The likes of Sibley and Lees are off and running this year and might need another look from the selectors. Not sure they're the answer but Crawley needs a score.

IPL yesterday.

"A 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi ran down the track and pumped Shardul Thakur for a six over covers first ball of his IPL career."

And out for a 2 ball duck in his next game. Cricket is a cruel mistress.

But he will likely have a huge future - definitely in franchise cricket.

"Runs is the currency" says Wright while picking an opener for the tests that has scored fuck all this year and a career first class average of less than 32.

We confused the Windies by having a full day of perfect conditions in Clontarf
First one-day international, Clontarf

Ireland 303-6 (50.0 overs) Balbirnie 112, Tector 56; Forde 3-68

West Indies 179 all out (34.1 overs) Chase 55, Forde 38; McCarthy 4-32

Ireland won by 124 runs

Scorecard

Paul Stirling became the first Irish player to reach 10,000 international runs as Ireland comfortably beat West Indies in the opening one-day international at Clontarf.

A 109-run partnership between Andrew Balbirnie (112) and record-breaking captain Stirling (54) set Ireland on course for victory as they reached 303-6.

Stirling has scored 5,979 runs in ODIs, 3,656 in T20s and 382 runs in Test cricket.

West Indies, who were facing the Irish in Dublin for the first time since 2019, were all out for just 179, as Barry McCarthy claimed 4-32.

The sides will meet again on Friday at Clontarf in the second ODI, with the third game of the series being played at the same venue on Sunday.

England piling on the runs. Duckett out for 140.

Not sure what this match will really do for England except time in the middle and a look at the bowlers.

Ball remotely wasn't dead, she left her ground well before the ball got to the keeper. Batter only has herself to blame

Sure I don't disagree it's her own fault for not realising the ball was still in play, I'm just a bit confused as to why appealing for a Mankad is such a big no no, but this is ok

Because it's still very much ball in play. And suppose you allowed this as a fielding side, batters would take liberties and always be advancing in case a run was available

Which isn't to say I'd have been aghast had they withdrawn an appeal, but I've also got no problems it's out.

Curious to see Tim Southee on the England balcony at Trent Bridge today . Google says he’s been taken on as a specialist coach before playing in the “Hundred”.
First steps in his new career?
