Corey Anderson has signed a three year contract in the US. He’s had a horrible run of injuries but with our current depth it would be a hard road back even if he did regain full fitness.

Day 4 (hopefully not the whole day though)
Mostly fine with a little bit of cloud around. Faint westerly - perfect for golf and cricket.
Do we go to Number 1 in the rankings with a win here?
Would seem strange after Oz dicked us last year

We have a mental block vs Australia but have been pretty consistent other than that. Our results in the sub-continent lately are pretty favourable compared to Australia’s from memory.Enzedder wrote: Sat Dec 05, 2020 9:42 pm Day 4 (hopefully not the whole day though)

Do we have a mental block against Australia, or a skills deficit against world class pace bowling on fast, bouncy wickets?Jb1981 wrote: Sat Dec 05, 2020 10:15 pmWe have a mental block vs Australia but have been pretty consistent other than that. You also wanted Southee dropped before he ripped through the West Indies top order, so maybe sit this one out. Moving one of our best ever batsmen out of his best for a debutant is on another level again.obelixtim wrote: Sun Dec 06, 2020 1:48 am Rather see Conway in before Henry "useless" Nicholls. Would like to see him come in at 4 before Roscoe.
Henry Nicholls is far from "one of our best ever batsmen". He did nothing in this game, and has failed multiple times. Reminds me of Craig McMillion. Flat track bully who fails far more often than he produces. And Southee gets a good day now and again when the pitch is in his favour. I'll give him credit for this game.mrbrownstone wrote: Sun Dec 06, 2020 3:35 amYou also wanted Southee dropped before he ripped through the West Indies top order, so maybe sit this one out. And I think Conway could become a great player, he certainly deserves a chance.
I believe he was referring to your suggestion that Conway be squeezed in the batting order at 4, which requires moving Taylor to 5. Taylor is already a great player who deserves more respect than being jiggled around for a newbie who could become a great player.obelixtim wrote: Sun Dec 06, 2020 3:47 amHenry Nicholls is far from "one of our best ever batsmen". That's right. I'm not against Conway getting a go, but Taylor has a lock on the 4 position until he retires.Kiwias wrote: Sun Dec 06, 2020 3:49 amI believe he was referring to your suggestion that Conway be squeezed in the batting order at 4, which requires moving Taylor to 5. I wanted Conway up the order, (but not opening) because I can see him and KW spending a lot of time batting together. He seems like a very cool customer. Which is why I put him ahead of Roscoe.
Roscoe can still do a good job at 5, but he won't be around forever, so It would be a good time to give Conway a decent crack with an eye to the future.

Then put him at 5 and move him up the order if Taylor's form drops off over a sustained period.obelixtim wrote: Sun Dec 06, 2020 4:57 am I wanted Conway up the order, (but not opening) because I can see him and KW spending a lot of time batting together. Can't see them move one of greatest ever for a debutant and nor should they.
Nicholls has the runs on the board but will need something this series to secure his spot in the future matches and he had that luxury because of the thrashing that just got dished out.
Interesting conundrum now though is what to do with the bowling attack. Won't get away with no spinner forever - that includes picking santner

Watling likely to be back for the second test, Kane to play while likely missing the first test against Pakistan.
Also all those calling for southee to be dropped will be shocked to see he has reached his highest ever ranking of 4th in the world... Wagner up to 2 well behind Cummins

Kane gone from the second test with his wife set to give birth to their first child. Obviously takes priority, and not a bad chance to give Will Young another opportunity anyway. Latham to captain.
Decent chance he still ends up as top run scorer for the series from just 1 innings anyway.
So likely we'll see: Latham (c), Blundell, Young, Taylor, Nicholls, Watling, Mitchell/Santner, Jamieson, Southee, Wagner, Boult
Batting does look a touch vulnerable with Young new, Blundell still inexperienced in the opening role, Nicholls searching for form, and Watling just back. Plenty falls on Latham and Taylor.

Huge test without Kane. Think at one point he was on 150 odd and the rest were 200/6, hoping Taylor goes big and young is a bit more confident at the crease.
Much as you said. 78-3 now, Latham, Blundell, and Taylor gone now.mrbrownstone wrote: Thu Dec 10, 2020 5:38 am Kane gone from the second test with his wife set to give birth to their first child.
