Sharks have a long history of hard, uncompromising loose forwards like Ryan Kankowski and Keagan Daniel. No reason why they can’t get a few more like them.

If the Eastern Cape can't provide, the Free State surely will.

If the Sharks management had any brains they'd poach Rudolph from the States.

Rudoph and Gideon van der Merwe would provide some much needed platteland beef to our coastal flair.

I think this game is hard to call. The Sharks are so inconsistent this season, WP will have trouble trying to guess which side is going to turn up. If the Sharks team that beat the Bulls turns up, then we will win. But any other game from this season and WP will put us away easily. Goodness knows what team is going to be put out, the only two dead-certain starters are Ox and Bosch, if they don't get the 'rona.

The Freestate showed how to beat the WP. But you need a very strong scrum. The Sharks wont beat beat the WP with Kum Ba Yah at 3. Take on their forwards and you take away everything that they have because the WP backline is pretty ordinary.

I am off on Saturday and look forward to an ice cold beer from the shebeen, a braai and watching these 2 teams supporters slug it out.

SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: Bulls Director of Rugby, Jake White, has named an extended squad in preparation for the Currie Cup clash against the Lions at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.

The larger than normal group is mainly due to the fact that the team is still awaiting a few COVID-19 test results.

The final matchday squad will be trimmed and finalised as soon as possible.

“It’s been an interesting and challenging season to say the least, with the past two weeks probably being our most testing yet. We haven’t had a lot of time together following the isolation protocols, which doesn’t make it ideal going into a crunch game like this one,” White explained.

“Having said that, we’re just excited to be able to play again and get our campaign back on track.”

Bulls extended matchday squad: Lizo Gqoboka, Schalk Erasmus, Trevor Nyakane, Jan Uys, Ruan Nortje, Marco van Staden, Elrigh Louw, Duane Vermeulen, Embrose Papier, Chris Smith, Stravino Jacobs, Cornal Hendricks, Marnus Potgieter, Jay-Cee Nel, David Kriel, Johan Grobbelaar, Jacques van Rooyen, Marcel van der Merwe, Walt Steenkamp, Arno Botha, Tim Agaba, Ivan van Zyl, Morne Steyn, Keagan Johannes, David Kellerman, Jade Stighling, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Joe van Zyl.

Date: Wednesday, January 6
Venue: Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
Kick-off: 16.00 (14.00)
Referee: Cwengile Jadezweni
Assistant Referees: Paul Mente, Morne Ferreira
TMO: Marius van der Westhuizen

REACTION: Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen is not taking any chances against the table-topping Bulls on Wednesday.

The Lions are currently third on the log following their valuable 33-25 win over the Pumas in their Currie Cup Round Six match in Nelspruit on Saturday.

The result saw the Lions book a semifinal spot, however, the side needs to pick up a win over the Bulls at Loftus on Wednesday to put themself in contention for a home semifinal.

While the Bulls enjoyed a bye, the Lions will have to put in another strong performance in a space of four days following their outing against the Pumas.

Despite the win being the Lions’ fifth consecutive victory, the team’s performance was far from pleasing revealed head coach Ivan van Rooyen.

“I’m proud of the result and the character but disappointed with the performance,” Van Rooyen told reporters after the win in Nelspruit.

“We struggled with continuity and the Pumas did well to break our rhythm – so lots of lessons to learn.

“I think it was an ideal occasion to try to be a bit abnormal and to be innovative in terms of our style.”

The set-pieces were a particular area where the Pumas proved to a major threat.

“We expected the set-piece was going to be tough, given that [the former Lions age-group player] Darrien Landberg knows our system quite well while Morgan Naude has had an excellent season for the Pumas.

“Having said that, our set-pieces is one of our strengths, so we have to take a good look at it.”

While the Lions coach admitted it was ideal opportunity to play more adventurous rugby against the Pumas, he revealed that he will opt for a pragmatic approach against the Bulls team.

The Lions are one of only two teams to have beaten the Bulls this season

“If things went a bit different, we might have changed the plan for the Bulls, however, the result has forced us to be a bit more conservative and hopefully we can tire the Bulls.”

In this situation I back the Sharks. WP has a built in fear of failure when it matters. They lose it in their heads before they get onto the pitch. We have seen games where we were told the WP lineouts would destroy us and we cleaned them up.. we have heard how the scrums would be a walkover and we held our own. Our lads have strength of conviction and confidence. BMT when it matters..

The only concern is the ref again. But like I keep saying. Just score more points than the opposition

I am not worried about this Saturday.

Home semis at empty stadiums isn't that an advantage.

The semi final and possible final is the important ones.

When does the WP start playing at Cape Town Stadium?
Is there a chance that they will host the final while still playing at Boolands?

For me, WP is peaking at the right time. We have the players, so I am confident that we will do well in the play-offs.

Regarding this Saturdays match, I'm pretty sure the saarkies will use Covid to get out of this match. It has happened already.

WP's scrum certainly gets them penalties at the right time yes. And they certainly have the players to beat the Sharks and win the competition. Will Captain Covid be back to lead the assault?

I hope that this game happens on the weekend. It is the only game with any sort of meaning

Not sure about Kolisi and I don't think it will play a big role. We are blessed to have a pack where those waiting in the wings are very good players on their own right. Look, scrum penalties aren't the most exciting way to get penalties, but hey, if you have a weapon, use the weapon.

Agreed about the game being played, I want to see Bosch behind a retreating pack, let's see if he can take the pressure and transfer it back to WP. Still, we might see some experimenting in the final pool game. We don't rate our season by only beating one certain team.

It's a bit of a dead rubber, so the killer instinct might be lacking. It won't be like that for the saarkies, they evaluate their season on how they went against WP, which is the best yardstick.

Having said that, if we win we will host the semi at Newlands, the second oldest rugby stadium in the world. I'm confident enough to propose a 2 week flounce bet.

Good man. Usually in the past you've ignored my flounce bets, as is the way of a flip flopper. It's nice to see that you've grown some balls during the festive season. I still have low to medium high hopes for you as a poster, which will be a massive improvement from where you are now.

I've always though the Bull's supporters were the most pigheaded blowhards in SA but the comments from some WP supporters on here and PR over the years has changed my mind. We don't have many WP supporters up here but the few I've met have always been good humble people. Perhaps the ones up here feel a bit out of place and are to scared to show their true selves or perhaps the frot vis fumes and shit weather affects their brains down there in the Cape.
