The common perception of a coup d’état involving tanks on the streets and generals addressing the nation doesn’t excuse any less visually dramatic attempt to steal power over a nation and its legal process...
suggesting Trump and his followers didn’t really do that because they were too fucking stupid to complete the job misses the point that they tried.
This was an attempted coup. The invasion of the Capitol came dangerously close to disaster. The chain of command for district police and National Guard had been altered in the lead up to the event in a manner that facilitated lawless actions of a mob.
A clumsy chicken is still a chicken.

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt; but there's a certain commonality to the people who are currently, desperately, trying to distract from what we all watched happen last week; & it isn't their overwhelming desire to see Justice done; or any national healing.

It's all very weird, and the GOP still want to deny it when the crowd are chanting 'hang Mike Pence', and not even just the GOP, Mike Pence wants to deny it. Yep. Even some senior GOP members are now expressing their agreement with impeachment.Insane_Homer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 3:47 pmFuck that, bury him and everyone one of his enablers and treat them like the terrorists they are.
Think we're in danger of being a little too naive.Slick wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 4:44 pmNow that the dust has settled a little are we not in danger of getting a bit shrill and over the top calling it an attempted coup (not a dig at you in particular). It was a fucking disgraceful action and for it Trump deserves absolutely everything coming his way. But coup? Not sure it is helpful using language like that.
There are pictures out there of very pumped up people being asked if they are ready to fight, them subsequently being very violent, and seemingly a level of organisation occurring. I can only presume they were segregated from the more peaceful revolutionaries, as the never seem to come together, at least in temperament. What was mostly caught on camera was the non-fighters behaving impeccably to the point of bizarre. These are the people that have set the mindset that it was a rubbish coup, can you even call it a coup. However, I suspect they were playing a very important planned role, which most of them were probably unaware of, but were happy to comply with. Walking within the rope barriers, taking selfies with police, larking around, tiding up even, but most importantly live steaming galore just how benign everything was to the outside world. This would have bought much needed time, quieting the alarm and the police response on site to a degree. Also helping stall, and justify the delay, for police/national guard reinforcements, all the while Trump was imploring members of his party under siege to delay the certification, and the serious guys getting on with the business of the day.
As has been said by others the were extremely close to accessing lawmakers, and that would have been game changing. The policeman that diverted the crowd exceptional, but another hero of the day was the man that had the courage to shoot when last defensive lines were nearly broken. Fine lines, if hostages had been taken, the reinforcements would not have come charging in to save the day, and Biden would not have been certified as president that day, maybe never.
The next play is less clear, but marshal law had been in the conversation. Would a repeat of same conversation with the Georgian governor have played out differently under these circumstances. He was still president, who was going to have the courage to take him on. It may seem fetched, but it's quite difficult to face up to such horrific scenarios, and more natural to dismiss. Example: Covid - people/politicians just couldn't grasp how serious and devastating it was and would go onto be, even when evidence from Italy and China was right in front of them, they played it down and some are still doing it today,
I'm maybe fully down the rabbit hole here, but I think we could all do with using our imaginations a bit more. Is it even Trump leading this mania, or is he merely a useful fool with no morals, a mere vehicle for some very unsavory forces, and to help capture the minds of 75 million Americans. Stole the podcast link below from Planet rugby . It's a bit long, but illuminating as well as frightening, and it's by people that have been studying the forces that let to Trump and the 6th.. Well worth listening to.

Lisa is a survivor of child abuse, domestic violence, incest, multiple rapes, and child sex trafficking. Lisa’s mother sexually trafficked her starting when she was a small child, including allowing her to be gang raped by adult men on multiple occasions and telling Lisa she had to “earn her keep.” Her years of torture at the hands of caregivers, documented brain damage, and severe mental illness have severed her connection with reality; without antipsychotic medication, she would lose the ability to understand what is happening to her and to know what is real.

That's a weird one because I'd have thought the last thing a Proud Boy would want to do is be forced to show ID by a Government representative (that twat who wore his work ID badge to the Capital last week excluded)
So a matter of breaking the cycle in this case. What a life... and what a way to end. Multiple victims on all sides. Is her mother still alive? Wonder what her story is... similar?Insane_Homer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 9:48 am Trump's mass killing spree continues.

No; they ask in States where they need to suppress minority voters; Texas has been doing this successfully for decades

Hot take:
Maybe it's better for the Dems to leave Trump be?
Yes, if all the political players were adhering to their oaths and honest about everything (from Trump to Covid to the fraud allegations) then Trump would have been impeached and tried lickitly split.
But the political landscape is so toxic that it was never going to happen.
So...leave Trump out there. Let the States pursue criminal charges if they choose, if anything it will be useful to bury him in legal fees. And it will suck money out of his fans' pockets that can't go to other GOP candidates. Yes it's dangerous, but Trump's looming presence on the 2014 horizon is also useful for the Dems to keep their base enegised for the next 4 years, and the reality is that Trump is a cancerous growth within the GOP. He is now causing issues with their corporate donors, and his fanatical rabid base is a huge threat to them (politically and physically) if they don't kowtow to him or the nonsense he spouts. If they don't have the courage to stand up to him now, throw them to their own wolves I say. They sat by or actively participated in creating this monster, let it destroy them.
They want the Dems to do all the dirty work so that they can play both sides; maintain a facade of support among the MAGA crowd AND play victim for the next 4 years how the evil communist Democrats are purging all the political opponents etc etc. to rile them up even more. Maybe don't give them that. Play into this unity narrative.
Don't get me wrong, it's high risk, high reward; I realise that. Either the GOP will split into 2 parties completely giving the Dems some measure of freedom to pursue their agenda for 8-12 years while the GOP is consumed with infighting between the cowardly moderates and the fanatics...or worst case scenario, the GOP is replaced completely by Trumpism. The latter would be a shame, but given that they are so far gone already, it might not be the worst thing as they will alienate more people the more violent they become. They are going to become more violent regardless of what happens...whether Trump fires them up from the 2024 campaign trail or from a jail cell playing victim. They all "Trust the Plan".

I'm aware I start with an objection to the death penalty, on both moral and practical grounds, but this case seems one even those who'd support the death penalty wouldn't want to touch, even with the crime she committed being so utterly appalling. And yet here we are in a supposed liberal democracy in 2021.
1. On the first point that's what you want. Tap the GOP supporters and enablers dry in their efforts to contain Trump and his MAGA army.
Get the Mercers to fight the Kochs. Bleed the MAGA fanatics dry; they'll have less to donate in 2024 against the Biden replacement as it is unlikely Biden will be running in 2024.
2. They will be divided yes; but if the Dems initiate impeachment, only a minority of GOP Reps & Senators will be required to get it through. Most of them will keep on keeping on as if nothing happend and revel in their ability to be victims of the tyrannical Dems, the Tech companies and everybody else.
The MAGA crowd will turn on the moderates because they are small in number and they will be purged and replaced with Trump loyalists. Meanwhile the Grahams and McConalls and Cruzes will remain loyal and inflame the the base when it suits them.
But, if you make Trump a GOP problem, the GOP leadership are going to have to get their house in order. Show some spine, and get a majority of their members to denounce Trumpism and turn against Trump for it to work.
OOOOOR Trump will crush them all and turn out to be the next Hitler for real in 2024. Could go either way. I said it was high risk, high reward.
1. I mean he’ll still be bleeding the taxpayer through his secret service protection, money to run his post presidential activities etc. The loonies will continue to give him money anywayBlake wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 2:28 pm1. 2. There’s some talk zMcConnell supports impeachment, we’ll find out later. Impeaching trump strengthens the moderates by throwing some of the loonies out of the party.

There's also the minor matter of the 2022 elections, & the $300 million he's scammed so far out of the morons.Biffer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 2:41 pm1. He's a cancer that needs to be permanently excised from Politics.
He can still resign in return for a pardon; or Pence can show some balls. If it comes down to impeachment; it's because that's the only option the GOP are leaving the majority; & they can live with the stink of their inaction.
This is an opportunity as you say to rehabilitate the GOP; but it's up to them to decide which side of history they want to be on.
1. No doubt Trump will continue gifting, but it would be interesting to see what that bills adds up to. I'm not sure how extensive a former presidents' Secret Service detail actually is. There might be ways around that by actually capping it at a reasonable level (though legislation) and writing it off as sunk cost. Could even use it too feed into his deep state paranoia and make it difficult for him to meet with Russian contacts etc without scrutiny.Biffer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 2:41 pm 1. 2. McConnell is a snake and a coward. He is waiting for Pence or Pelosi to do the dirty work for him. If he was really in favour he would be whipping up votes and daring Pelosi to push the articles through the house so he could get on with it. But now he is just playing both sides, using the recess to shield himself from actually pushing it through, while claiming that Trump "might have committed impeachable offenses" in the press to weasel out of anything concrete thereby keep both his donors and MAGA base calm.
According to the New York Times, Mitch McConnell has told confidants he was pleased Democrats wanted to impeach the president because he believed it would help rid the Republican party of Mr Trump. Of course, its a big step from being pleased the Democrats are doing this, to actually voting with them. Perhaps he'll abstain?Biffer wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 2:41 pm1.
