Official Lions selection, moaning and bitching thread
With just a year to go to the Lions tour (maybe) how come this site has so many thread titles exported over but no Lions thread??
I'll leave the official one to someone more adept with pictures than me but this is the Official selection, moaning, bitching, laughing at Gatland trolling various people thread.
So in bored tradition, here is a 23 to take on SA if it was in a few weeks so no form to go on but hopefully very few injuries. Couple of baits in here to see what can be reeled in...
Vunipola
George
Furlong
Ryan
Itoje
Wainwright
Curry
Vunipola
Webb
Farrell (c)
Watson
Tuilagi
Davies
Daly
Hogg
Genge, LCD, Sinks, Lawes, Faletau, Williams, Russell, Williams

It's been so long since I've watched a game of rugby, I can't personally remember how good any of them are.

Always enjoy a good lions selection thread.
One thing's for sure. The English players are going to be fucked come next June.

Yeah, good point. It will be interesting to see how pre-Covid form translates.Margin__Walker wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 8:48 pm It's been so long since I've watched a game of rugby, I can't personally remember how good any of them are.
It’s a cliche that class is permanent and form is temporary. I guess this is an opportunity to test that.
The Wainwright of the world cup goes. The Wainwright of March doesn't.
Honestly the Lions could get pumped 3-0. Wales were very poor in the Six Nations, Ireland are the worst they've been in years, Scotland are Scotland. Which leaves England. Who got pumped by the Boks.
Having said that, the rest may have done these players some good.
Honestly, I think this might be the best strategy. Although no-one really likes the English, so tour morale would be in the toilet. Maybe Ireland + guests? Not sure if Scotland + guests would be worth calling ‘Scotland’, though lots of Scots should make the tour.
Either way, you want a core of a national team, bolstered with able upgrades.
George will have a year of championship behind him, surely wouldn't be up to the task? As I have said numerous times on the previous bored, I just don't get Farrell: I don't think he's in the top 3 10's in the UK and Ireland, not even England's best 10, in my opinion.
As for the series, SA to smash the Lions 3-0, I think.

Silly picking the Lions team now, Wales haven't pulled their usual trick of beating all comers in the Six Nations before the Lions Tour yet.
Wales peak for the season before the Lions.
Plus the English team are so fucking deplorable I doubt Gatland would ever go near them and quite right too.
If the ref was on the ball in Twickenham, against Wales, they (England) would have received 3 red cards.
That is a massive disciplinary issue when the pressure is on.
If that happened during a Lions test my gawd, can you imagine?. These are players who Eddie Jones can barely control, poor Gatland would have no chance.
First rule of rugby, you have to keep your players on the park.

Yes, in 2017, Wales really did smash all comers.Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 6:23 am Silly picking the Lions team now, Wales haven't pulled their usual trick of beating all comers in the Six Nations before the Lions Tour yet.

Look I am not saying English supporters will agree with me, of course not, but looking at it objectively, they basically forfeited their Lions jerseys that day. It was a disgusting, sneering, petulant spectacle I honestly hope I will never again witness,.

You what? What's the point of the Gatland Lions if all of a sudden he starts selecting Scots? Their sole purpose is for the Scots to be angry at someone else than the Scots for a change.Ali Cadoo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 11:03 pmHonestly, I think this might be the best strategy. On recent form I'd select Sutherland, Ritchie, Watson, Russell, Johnson, Hogg for the tour party. Possibly one out of Brown and McInally too. Huw Jones if he returns to form. But I trust Gatland to do the right thing and take Hogg (severely injured by some Irish thug before the first tour match) and a token winger for the dirt-trackers (Darcy Graham probably) only.
I have absolutely no idea what incident or game you're referring to?Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 6:50 am Look I am not saying English supporters will agree with me, of course not, but looking at it objectively, they basically forfeited their Lions jerseys that day. Ireland are mis-firing at the moment. They seem to be in some kind of transition of players and coaching staff and don't seem to have that killer instinct of 2018.Ali Cadoo wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 11:03 pmHonestly, I think this might be the best strategy. I think more Scots should make this tour though. The question is will they make it to the test squad?
Don't worry. I've been drinking.
Is this C69 going full bore or the triumphant return of REFRY? It's very amusing either way.Caley_Red wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 7:22 amI have absolutely no idea what incident or game you're referring to?Line6 HXFX wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 6:50 am Look I am not saying English supporters will agree with me, of course not, but looking at it objectively, they basically forfeited their Lions jerseys that day. He would be first on my list , and about the only player / position that Celts just don’t have somebody as good.ASMO wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 11:17 amIndeed, thats a mad call, May brilliant under the high ball and has more gas than Daly.Yeeb wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 11:11 amDaly over May ? Adams is a fine player and finisher , but no ways he could create those Jonny May individual tries out of nothing against tier 1 teams that May does so often.
Would deffo have him over Daly though, didn’t he beat him to a kick for a try?

Rory Sutherland was the best loosehead in the 6N this year. That's a hill I'm prepared to die on. Him diamond.
Jamie Ritchie definitely one of the top B&I loose forwards in the last year.
Sam Johnson has played himself into the reckoning since his debut in the 2019 6N, has excelled at inside centre.
Watson, Russell, Hogg sustained excellence since the last Lions tour.
McInally and Brown are not notably inferior to any of the other 6N hookers, and Huw Jones looked like the best centre in the 6N when he ran through defences for fun - but needs to find that mojo again.
I reckon the back 3 for the Lions may be Adams, May and Williams. Hard to say what form they'll all be in by the time they get back mind.

Gatland doesn't do token Scots in his test team. And Hogg will be broken by some Irish friendly fire again long before the Tests start.

Horrendously over rated player. Has gas and has scored a coupe of good trys from nothing but poor basic skills (decent under a high ball to be fair), can’t pass, dodgy defence. Not on a wind up, he would be well down my list for a Lions place, would maybe make the wider squadASMO wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 11:17 amIndeed, thats a mad call, May brilliant under the high ball and has more gas than Daly.Yeeb wrote: ↑Tue Jul 14, 2020 11:11 amDaly over May ? May's defence is decent enough. Better than plenty of wings England have played over the last decade or so anyway.
He'll be 31 by the time of the tour though. Which is getting towards the upper end of the threshold for a wing whose USP is gas at that level.

Not sure May will be losing top end pace at just 31... he's a snakey racer so will probably be lightning for a lot longer than the big fast units (eg. Ben Cohen) who tend to lose pace more rapidly (aha!). And he does bring a lot of nous, too. I like him. Does he have a Welsh grandparent?

You're fighting the good fight here, pretty much single-handedly but no-one is going to take you on. It's an illustration of how significant Scotland really is in these discussions.
