Hello and welcome to the Official Welsh Rugby/Rygbi Cymru Thread. Please pull up a chair and discuss the wonder that is Welsh rugby.

Welsh rugby is controlled by the governing body the Welsh Rugby Union or WRU (boo hiss!) which oversees 320 member clubs, the Welsh national team and National Leagues and Cups.

The current president is Gerald Davies.

Currently (And I say currently because fuck knows what the WRU will do in the coming months.) Welsh rugby has four professional sides that play in the PRO14 these are:

Cardiff Blues/Gleision Caerdydd:

Formed in 2003 they play at Cardiff Arms Park in Cardiff. They have had some success and have twice won the European Challenge Cup.

Current squad is:

Dragons/Dreigiau:

A.k.a. The Cows they formed in 2003 and play at Rodney Parade in Newport. Their success is less measured in trophies and more measured in how many careers have been rebuilt and the amount of lives saved.

Current squad is:

The Ospreys/Y Gweilch:

Formed in 2003 they play at the Liberty stadium in Swansea. They have had some moderate success winning the Celtic League four times in 2004–05, 2006–07, 2009–10 and 2011–12, bag of shite in Europe though.

Current squad is:

Scarlets/Y Sgarlets:

The Scarlets or The Turks as they are also known formed in 2003 and play at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli. They have also had some success winning the Celtic League in the 2016-17 season beating Munster 46-22 in the final.

Current squad is:

Below this are several league where semi-professional and amateur clubs play.

I used the English spelling, didn't want to spook them with too much "foreign".

Tompkins is going to the Dragons and why is he going to the Dragons?

Nick Tompkins: Wales centre joins 'exciting' Dragons after talks with all regions
Wales centre Nick Tompkins has revealed he held talks with all four Welsh regions but chose to join Dragons as they were the most "exciting" option.

The 25-year-old signed on a season-long loan from European champions Saracens, who have been relegated from the Premiership for salary cap breaches.

Tompkins was in demand after a flying start to his international career.

"I liked all regions but Dragons to me seemed the up and coming, exciting team," he said.

"I spoke to the other regions, I spoke to all of them. They all spoke really well about their environment.

"From the Dragons point of view, it was refreshing when I spoke to Dean [Ryan, director of rugby], the way we talked was honest, open and refreshing.

"They just spoke differently and it sounded more like what I've been used to than other clubs. That's really because of Dean and, moving forward, what he's doing with the team.
The boy loves it!

Yes, Welsh rugby really benefited from COVID-19 there.

This forum seems a bit slow, is it going to pick up or what? Oh, hello by the way, I was 7N31 on PR, thought I'd have a change of name.

Yeah, will probably pick up once the old bored finally gets taken out behind the shed, given one last feed, a chance to take a moment to enjoy the wonder of existence, and then have its head caved in with dignity.

I chose to stick with the same stupid name I chose 17 years ago...frankly I didn't really think it through this time or last.

Just noticed from the squads listed above that, with Brandon Nansen leaving, there are no players in the Dragons squad who are not welsh qualified.

The likely one is Maksymiw from Connacht, sounds done...Rowlands is the dream signing. Rumours but nothing I've heard that suggests it's close. Fingers crossed.

Well this is pleasant.

Who else thinks Pivac should thank the Gods for COVID, would've been a bad run of results for the start of his tenure otherwise.

I think he was a bit hard done by to be honest. It was the game against Scotland so he had a good chance to see out his first Six Nations on a winning note even if it was underwhelming results wise. Thought there have been some pretty good moments in the championship. the try v England at the start of the second half was probably the best try of the tournament.

Gatland spoiled us by winning the grand slam in the first Six Nations. After that the results weren't that great, by the end of 2010 Wales had won 16 and lost 17 so it wasn't sunshine and roses by a long way. We as fans really, really, really fucking need to give Pivac time.

I'm hoping, based on his comments recently, that Pat Lam is being sounded out as next of the rank. What he's done with the saes moongazer/cousin fondlers has been impressive, so imagine what he could do with some Valleys roiders in a national setup. Got to be worth putting him on notice.

Agreed, I'm a big Pivac fan and I'm feeling excited by the offensive driven rugby he'll hopefully bring to the team.

People need to remember that for all the brilliance he brought to the structure of Welsh rugby and on the pitch, Gatland lost a fair chunk of his games, and I hope I never have to sit through another southern hemisphere drought like the one under his tenure. I almost feel a sense of relief that the Gats era is over, like he was holding our attack back all the time.
Don't worry. I've been drinking.

Agree about needing to give Pivac time, I’d hate to think the WRU would go all kickball and fire coaches after a bad half... Lam does look like a tasty, healthy alternative tho...

Dean Ryan jizzing himself over playing in the Champions Cup next season
"Champions Cup is on the one hand really daunting but on the other really exciting," said Ryan.

"Every person who works in sport wants to be involved at the top and our players aren't any different.

"It doesn't mean our resources won't be challenged or that the match-ups won't be interesting, but we can't help but get excited.
Lads, I can't believe the Dragons are going to win the Champions Cup next season!!!!
