Daily weighing is pointless, your weight can fluctuate by up to 2kg a day, if you need to do it, do it weekly, same time, same day, that will give you a better indication, but actually the best indicator is clothes, if you feel them getting looser, you know you are getting it right.

Yep been doing it on a Friday morning weekly for a couple of years (minus the time I've not been healthy) - get up, have a piss, wash my hands, weigh myself.

The bean soup is awesome thanks. It will surely become one of my regulars and I think I may partially mash the beans next time I make it.

For me it’s a habit. After my shower I dry and weigh. That way I don’t risk missing my weekly weigh in. And naturally I take fluctuations into account but follow the trend. Who else here has kept their weight under their target for over a dozen years? You can’t argue with success.

And a tip I got from one of my wife’s diet attempts. If you’re feeling really peckish, take 5 almonds and eat them slowly, one after another. It works.

I'll have to try this.

Have added walnuts and almonds to my 'snack' list, not that keen on them but half a dozen a day instead of crisps/chocolate has to be an improvement.

Weigh myself twice a week but expect some fluctuations, but as long as the general trend is down I'm happy. Exercise makes a huge difference managed my 10k today while walking to the Health centre in the nearest village today to pick up a prescription (for fking shingles )

Can they treat shingles now? All I was able to use that helped at all was calamine lotion. You have my sympathies.

I'd found Aloe Vera gel gives some respite but I'd had 10days (since my covid jab), it just wasn't improving and was getting more sensitive and painful phoned in for a chat with my GP and she set out some Aciclovir 800mg horse tablet 5 times a day. I remember having to give something similar to cattle and sheep, easiest way way was using a tube as long you blew first

Well done

I've had a slight lapse this week I had got down to 81.0 back up to 81.7 this morning, need to knuckle back down again.

On the other side even my recently 34" waist jeans are needing a belt, glad I only got 1 pair, a lot of my old clothes will be consigned to the recycling thingy soon.

The podcast below is really good at laying out the benefits of:
  • Resistance training
  • A high-protein diet
And the counterproductive nature of
  • Relying on endless cardio
  • Fixating on "low calories"

Once you get past the silly, over-the-top introduction, these guys convincingly lay out the way to lose weight in a sustainable manner. Highly recommended

Each to their own, i walk every day (Cardio) and count calories, and have lost 22kg in about 9 months so it works and is totally sustainable.

Yeah, that obviously works for you. I haven't articulated the gist of the podcast that well. The cardio they're talking about I think is more the one hour a day jogging sort of stuff. And the calorie counting they're talking about is the really strict, soul-destroying regimented kind.

I have come down 25 kgs over the years, 15 of those in the past three years, and resistance training and a high-protein, high veggie diet have been central. But walking is a big part of my lifestyle too. The thing is, I really enjoy it, so obviously it's going to be easy to sustain.

Yeah, I'm still stalled in weight terms at around 18 and a half stone, but the 38" jeans I bought 3 months ago continue to get looser and the belt is increasingly needed.

That is an important thing to note, the scales don't always tell the whole stoary, but clothes size does

I know the 10,000 steps has no scientific basis but it was a target. So far averaging around 13,000 and 10k every day and should hit 1,000,000 steps this year by next Saturday. Might have a day off!
Have you lost much?
Yeh - about 20lbs although I have cut back on bad foodstuffs etc. However lost a lot of inches around the waist etc and my dodgy arthritic knees are so much better, leg care so much stronger. Also found about another 20-30 yards off the tee on the golf course! Think I will keep it going, enjoying the walking now and the fresh air and positive impact on mental health during lock down has been brilliant. Having said that I am desperate for gym to open again.
Hit the 1,000,000 steps last Saturday. Had a couple of days off this week but to be honest I'm missing the walking so will keep the counting going and keep aim for 10k steps a day minimum. Luckily golfing quite a bit now so easy to keep the steps going, usually its 12,000 steps a round. I have started carrying my clubs rather than using my electric trolley to use up a few more calories. Reckon I will just keep the step count going.

Well done I was in so much pain after my last round (2 years ago now) I just couldn't face going out again. I think I'm now in a position to consider playing again.

Worth sticking with it! Its a good 5-6 mile walk and a bit of socialising and is safe and legit up here during lock downs. Trying to play 4 times a week at the moment but weather fecked up this weekend. Now clocks have gone back it should be easier to fit them in plus I am only working part time now.

Congrats! My weight loss journey has slowed a lot recently, but I think fat is still going down, and muscle is slightly increasing (at least that's what I'm telling myself).

How old are you? I'm 37, and felt like if I don't get a grip on it soon, it's only going to get harder.

42. I was steady at around 18.5-19 stone until a few years ago with my eye problems and all the associated operations and lying prone for long periods of time. It does seem to come off in waves - I've had a couple of months now where it was even creeping up slightly, but my clothes kept getting looser and I kept having to tighten the belt further. But it's suddenly dropping again fairly rapidly

Anyone have any suggestions for use of a tire? I have access to a rear tractor tire - which I flip - and a front one that's heavy. I don't think I can get inside and do dead lifts of either (too wide, too narrow). I think my landlady would shoot me if I pushed it along the grass.

Hit it with overhead sledgehammer, switching hands? If it's big enough to take it.

I’m on prednisone, so in the last three weeks have gained over 23lbs to the heaviest I’ve been for over ten years.

Doing leg press / bench press with someone laying in the tire seems nuts! Approaching the point of failure, your partner is going to put MORE pressure in their attempt to get off... or maybe they'd step down into the middle?

Back in the gym last night! Hard work but enjoyed it - good to be back. My gym - DL - is working hard to keep covid19 precautions in place and everyone is adhering to the rules. Did version 1 of my usual circuit, took about an hour and 15 mins:

- 15 mins cardio on x-trainer
- TRX - lunges, squats and side squats 10x3 of each
- Sit ups with 2kg medicine ball 15x3
- Russian twists with 2kg medicine ball 20x3
- Planks 3x1 minute
- Kettle bell swings 8kg 15 x 3
- Box squats 8kg 15 x 3
- Single leg balances - each leg x 45 secs x 3 (rehab for dodgy knees)
- Skull crushers 15kg 15x3
- Seated shoulder dumbbell press 16kg 15 x 3
- Clean and Jerks 15kg 15 x 3
- 21s x 3

Knackered today but glad I'm back into the swing of things. Still trying to walk/golf every day on top of gym and still averaging c12k steps a day. Watching diet and using MyFitnessPal to keep track, averaging between 1500 and 2000 calories a day. Been off alcohol for last 3 weeks and that is making a difference. See if I can last another few weeks off the booze. Not weighed myself recently by my trousers and shorts are much looser. Actually enjoying this now!

It is very addictive i have found, unhealthily so i would say, i need to give my body a break but i cant bring myself to do so.

It does become addictive but better than addiction to booze or food. I've lost about 20+lbs since January and want to lose another 20lbs. I do tend to go all in when exercising but it is becoming more difficult to sustain now I'm approaching 62.

Played a round of golf this afternoon and could barely bend down to tee up the ball after last night gym exertions! My hamstrings and glutes were sore probably after the TRX work. Plan is golf Thursday and then golf am and gym pm on Friday.

Not quite the same, but similar, I'm finding myself trying to keep up with a bunch of teens/20 year olds in touch rugby. I'm a prop anyway. Feeling absolutely drained today after practice last night. Need to remember to rehydrate better I suspect. Absolutely loving it though, even if my body is complaining. Can't wait to get back to scrums, just want a lot of decent practice first though!

Thanks guys
When this thread started it gave me the motivation to do something about my weight
I have gone from 118kg down to 106kg by increasing exercise & cutting out carbs
Also whomever mentioned eating the 4 almonds to stave off hunger pangs- that really works for me.

I seem to have shed 8kg in as many weeks by doing nothing more than cutting out beer, nothing else has changed.

How often do you find yourself sliding out to a wing where there's not likely to be any action? Or matching up with the other older/slower person on the opposing team?

Had touch training today. Skinned a few of them a few times :D. I'm not faster than them, but if I'm on a clean break I can make a fair few yards, getting some silky hips too. There's not really many breathers on the wing since you're always working to get back onside after a touch etc. Bloody knackering!

Going to need to get a lot more stringent scrum technique though, I won't have the size to just lie against the opponent.

I'll blame my second row anyway.

EDIT - Today was a fasting day too, actually felt pretty energetic considering I've only had a coffee, a bovril and an orange juice (second bovril now).
Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
