Not too soon in the slightest. He's been off his best for ages, he keeps picking up injuries and then being rushed back for international duty and it's doing him no favours.

The reason they do it is to prevent the ball carrier trying to drop his knee (which, BTW, pisses me off: you should not be rewarded there for trying to go off your feet) but it's totally illegal.
